How to identify limiting beliefs

Hey guys, I posted this on my blog, but I thought I'd share it here:

I just made a quick video about identifying limiting beliefs, and in my case, I chose money.

Ask yourself these questions, and you will see exactly what is causing you to experience your current financial circumstance.

I highly encourage you to spend 20-30 minutes on these questions as they will give you clarity:

What did you parent(s) tell you about money?
What kind of thoughts/ideas about money did you pick up from them?
What kind of behaviors about money did you observe in your parents?
What did you learn in school about money?
What did your peers/environment/TV tell you about money?
What things did you learn/conclude about money?
What did you learn about money that no one ever actually said to you in so many words?

Here is the video where I go over this simple exercise:

Do not take this exercise lightly. Just by identifying deeply hidden beliefs, you will likely have some major aha moments that could change your life and finances.

Great post Jason! I went through a similar exercise several years ago where I actually did tow different things a few weeks apart. I begin have a brain dump... "Money is"... and just wrote everything that came to my mind. I didn't question it or judge it, I just wrote it down. Then a few weeks later I did a full-on mind map. I put the word "money" in the middle and started building it out from there.

I found so many odd beliefs and ideas in there. It was like digging for coal in a mine full of diamonds and gold. My result was I eliminated many of those beliefs and broke through the 6 figure barrier in my consultancy work, a target I had struggled with for many years. And today, I'm getting ready to break into the multiple 6 figures realm. It's very freeing.

  • Hi JasonChoi,

That was a very nice video. I liked the way it flowed and the information it imparted.

This topic struck a chord in me. And you are so right: these beliefs, especially about money, are HIDDEN from conscious view. I know there are hidden from me.

Just watching the part of your video when you give personal examples of limiting thoughts on money, I remembered back to my family kitchen and the discussions about Christmas time layoffs for Father and the scarcity that would strike our family. Ouch! Hidden belief revealed!

You made a very very good "targeted point" with this video, Jason. Thank you for your artful and revealing effort.

What we believe, often unconsciously, forms a floor and a ceiling to our life, which we then live in.

Changing our beliefs, hopefully by exchanging the old ones with healthier new ones, is key to enlarging our life, and not being 'boxed' in.

New ideas can blow out our ceiling and let us see the sky which beckons us to fly.
