Can You Think Of Ways To KILL Creativity?

This is going to sound like a odd request but I need ways to kill my creativity and narrow my focus. I've spent a month developing a really detailed new system for my CPA videos but I'm worried I'll fall into my old habit of getting distracted by new ideas instead of doing work.

So I want any ideas that you can think of or use already to kill my creativity.

Don't kill the creativity! Why not just combine the two?

Re-focus and channel all those flavorful creative juices into ONE focus. Pick something and stick with it. Use that creativity to create your system.

Remember, a step in the wrong direction is usually better than taking no steps at all.

Here is a tip to keep your mind from wandering:

    1. Write out your goals.
    2. List 7 POSITIVE, AWESOMELY AMAZING things that will happen when you complete these goals. (ie. Goal: Lose 10 lbs - More Fit, 6-pack abs, Lookin sexy while strolling the beach...)
    3. Hang the list where you will see it daily.

Just because you have goals set does not mean you will stay motivated.

You need to remind yourself DAILY of the great things that will happen when you FOCUS your attention and creativity on ONE thing.

Stay motivated and make progress everyday. You will get there

Your question isn't the right one.

You don't need to kill your creativity, you need to learn how to focus.

Edit: Yah, exactly what Japles wrote! Great tips there. If you follow his advice and actually execute on what he suggests (plus add a #4 - "Do the work.") then you will be golden

Thanks for the advice, should I change anything in my environment too?

As for your environment, try to create a workplace with the least amount of distractions possible.

        You could try:
        • Getting rid of everything you don't need and only leaving the essential items that you use everyday.
        • Turning off wifi when you don't need it.
        • Staying organized.
        • Turn off notification sounds.
        • Forward phone calls and emails.
        • Paint your walls white (Steve Jobs did this to keep his mind "clutter-free").

I recently just converted my closet into a desk/work area. All I have is a desk to work on and whatever it is I am trying to focus on. When I close the door it is just pure productivity! The only caveat is that it is TINY and sometimes I have to go outside to change my mind

Tim Ferriss is full of tips to increase focus and productivity. You can read his book, "The 4-Hour Workweek" if you haven't already. It's pretty good and has some helpful tips including the ones I suggested.

  • How does one keep his feet to the fire? (complete the creative task you are working on?)

First I woud deny myself the pleasure of not following through with the project at hand.
    Suffer that if you can.

What completion looks like is to launch the finished work in a timely way and watch for and RECORD THE RESLUTS.

If you are not arriving at measurable results, good or bad, you have allowed yourself to derail your hard earned progress on that project.

The kindest thing you can do for yourself is to finish up! Be kind. Get those resluts!

    Good luck,

I think killing your creativity is not the real thing but being focus is the real question here.
Set your goals right and break that old pattern. You'll soon realized that the more you set your goals the more easy it is to reach your destination.

  • Self-discipline is a killer of creativity because it narrows the focus of action to the established goal originally intended.

If you employ self-discipline you will not allow yourself the indignity of "not finishing" the CPA video productions you need to deliver to the public as a finished project.

Stop wooing creativity through focused self-restraint. It's something you have to find within yourself over time. Keep asking for the right psychological tools. They will come.

    A really weird one indeed!

I think it's you treat ideas popping here and there that's making you less productive. How about listing them down every time they pop out and move on with whatever you're doing.

Try adding music and do a lot of exercise!
