One of the Biggest Problems I See Here on the WF

I definitely am not writing this as a negative slam against anyone here on the WF... heck... for the first year I was online in 2001, I made less than $100.

But every day I come on the forum for a bit... I see an overwhelming theme that runs through each and every one of the threads here.

That theme is "How do I make Money"

It's usually worded a thousands different ways... Please help me, i'm broke... or "Please, I need to make money tonight".... or "Can You Really Make Money Online"

But the biggest problem when asking these questions is... your mindset. It's all about YOU.

If you come online for the sole goal to just make money online... and that's all you're focused on... it's probably going to be tough.

That's because you'll be CONSUMING and buying a ton of different programs that show you how you can make money online. And the more programs you buy... the more confused you become.

The biggest problem with the mindset of "How can I make money online" is that it prevents you from focusing on the one thing that it really takes to make the most money online:

Helping the largest amount of people solve their problems.

In other words, the true way to make the most money online is to focus on helping as many other people get what they want.

It's a mindset thing... but it's so powerful and important.

When you make the switch from "how can i make money online" to "how can i help out the largest number of people get what THEY want... you start working towards solutions for those people.

And you become a PRODUCER of content.

Producers make money... consumers spend money.

You become a producer when you start creating solutions for people. and that's when you make money... by selling solutions.

But if you're always thinking about how YOU can make money... you continue to chase after the newest shiny toy. and you consume/buy instead of produce/sell.

Believe me... i've been at this gig for 12 years now and have bought my share of programs. for the first year or so, my entire focus was on "how can i make money"

since i was without a job back then... i had to find a way to make money, and fast.

the funny thing is, i made $100 that first year.

But when I started thinking of how i could reach the largest number of people... and how i could help them get what THEY wanted... that's when the money started flowing in.

When you think of other people first, and you think of ways to solve their problems... and you think of large groups of people who have these problems that need solving... that's when the magic happens.

Because those people are actively looking to buy solutions to their problems... and if YOU can be the one who provides those solutions... you will make a lot of money.

but see how it starts with a mindset change... you start thinking of helping others before you help yourself.

But just this morning, i noticed over 10 threads on the first page, all with the same theme of "how can I make money"

that's great and all, it's why we're all here, to make money. that's what this forum is about... making money.

but believe me, when that's all you think about... you stay in the "consuming" mode... buying products.

when you flip it around and start thinking "how can i help others"... you switch to "producing mode" and you start creating solutions.

THAT is how you make money... by selling solutions.

Hope this helps... it definitely wasn't written to be a negative towards anyone here, i just wanted to relay a mindset shift that helped me out.

This was a huge awakening for me. I spent a lot of time in niches that weren't big enough to really make a ton of cash.

Don't get me wrong, there is money to be made in small niches, but don't rule out working in a niche that is HUGE either just because your scared of a little competition, chances are you'll work just as hard in a small niche as a big one. I'd rather help solve a problem that a few million people are having than one that only a few thousand are!

I thought this was going to be a boring old anti Warrior forum thread but as it turned out, it was an excellent read.

Well written Shawn, I only wish more people would read this and then actually do something with it.

This is a brilliant post and from the heart too. I love to see fellow warriors helping others especially when you can read between the lines and see that they are not covertly trying to drum up some business, just like yours isn't.

Thank you Terra, I appreciate it!

After 12 years online, you tend to learn a few things that could shortcut the learning curves for newer marketers... and that's what i try to do.

Just like I'll never enter a market that doesn't solve a problem for a large number of people... I'll almost never make a post here on the WF unless it contains a solution to some kind of problem that others might have.

So thank you, Terra, I appreciate what you said.

There you go Shawn, not writing the post for money or personal gain but to make the reader better off then before they read it. Good for you.

Along with many other very good threads here, this should be a thread other Warriors point people to whenever they come across one of the many variations of "How can I make money online?" threads.

          I certainly will be.

Although Frank Kern isn't the originator of this idea, it's true and relevant here.

There is no such thing as a recession. Money doesn't just vanish unless it is outright destroyed.

Money is simply transferred from Person A to Person B.

For people like myself, it's my intention to teach people how to become 'Person B'.

Be the collector, not the distributor.

If you want to MMO, learn a real skill, master it, and teach others how you did it.

Investing in your education is never a bad thing, but Shawn makes a good point - you have to act on what you've learned at some point or you're just a distributor.

Another thing Frank Kern says that also isn't unique to him - don't be a pxssy.

Get something done today and quit whining about how tough life is.

One of my rules in business is P/PC Which stands for Production and production capacity. One should strive to strike a balance between the two so as to remain relevant and for constant growth. If you concentrate too much on the production (or product) and forget about production capacity then you will make money now but you will eventually run out since your capacity will be stifled. This is true even in the offline world. So concentrating on how to make money and neglecting the building of your capacity to do so is counter productive.

Excellent post, Shawn! Tiffany Dow has mentioned this several times on her site. Don't focus so much on making money, genuinely CARE about helping individuals find the solutions for their woes; put yourself in their shoes, FEEL their pain. It's not about you, it's about your customers - then profits will follow.

Bennie, I can tell you from personal experience it's true.

First year online back in 2001... it was all about ME because i didn't have a job.

First year sales... maybe a 100 bucks.

When i changed my mindset and shifted to trying to find the largest number of people to help... that also does a few things in your marketing approach.

one, you start to write copy that resonates with the reader... because you're putting them and their needs first.

so, your copy is bound to improve.

and second, since you're trying to help as many other people as possible... you immediately try to scale your traffic.

once i focused on more persuasive copy and more traffic... high six figures happened every year for the past 11 years simply because i didn't change anything about that approach of trying to help the most people possible, no matter what market i entered.

    Great post!

It's more about "How can I help others?" rather than "How can I make money?". Once you get out of the "How can I make money?" mindset, then you can start making the real money, as ironic as that sounds.

Interesting read. My philosophy is that if you want to make money online, you have to think people as well... PEOPLE. They have problems that they need a solution to. They have thinks they need done. The way I see it is that you can either be one of the herd and get your needs fulfilled from someone who holds that certain skill set; or you can be that person with the skill set.

When answering how to make money online, I emphasize that it is never a trick. You get paid for the a skill you have. So, rather than searching out a nice easy "Earn $xxx in 5 hours with 10 minutes work" solution that eventually is gonna come back and bite you, be the person selling the stuff.

Thanks for the eye opener Shawn!

I can fully relate to your post, and it takes a while to shift from the mindset of making money first to helping others as your initial goal.

Just like my friend Zig said: "You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."

When you do become desperate and have to make money as fast as possible, there is a good chance that you will buy almost every online course that will come through your computer or email.

That is the fastest way to become very overwhelmed.

You just need to find one good mentor, which there are lots of them and that can be very overwhelming too, and then FOCUS on that path or strategy.

I agree... when you're desperate and broke... and you come on the WF and say you have to make money online in the next week or else you'll be on the streets... that puts an amazing amount of stress and pressure.

Now, some may argue that a deadline like that can get you moving fast
and trying to figure things out... but it can also cloud your thinking and cause you to act irrationally... hence buying all the "get rich quick" gimmicks.

Maybe I'm wrong and in the minority... but I honestly feel you should try to start an online business if you're broke or close to it. You're better off sticking with a job and doing the online thing on the side, in your spare time.

Because there is no such thing as overnight riches. It's a process like anything else that lasts.

There's nothing wrong with starting your biz part time, while you have
      an income from your job.

But if your rent/mortgage depends on you making money online in the
next month or so, you're going to put an undue amount of stress on you,
you'll cloud your thinking and not focus on those things that make businesses successful. You'll be too busy looking for the product that offers the biggest and usually most outrageous claims so they can get your cash.

    Great post Shawn.

And a little extra from me.

My first blog (which was based around eBay and eCommerce) was started as a hobby with no real monetization strategy - I wrote because that is what I love doing.

I then added a couple of CB products in there, and to my amazement, people went ahead and purchased through my link. My mindset changed from that point, and I got greedy. I started publishing posts with the SOLE intention of getting people to purchase some eBook or course through my affiliate link.

Guess what? People didn't click through, commissions more or less stalled, and I ended up ruining the blog because it became not something that helped people, but something that was, by design, intentionally trying to get clicks on aff links.

It was a great piece of self education.

And now I think I have gone full circle - I have been working on my blog for about 4 months now and it has already seen a good income for a 4 month old blog - and it is becuase my main focus has been helping people and sharing experiences. Yes, there are affiliate links in there, but my blog is not built around affiliate commissions, it is built around my love for writing and sharing.

      Hey Romeo90,

Thanks for sharing this, and thanks to Shawn too for his story. Those who appreciate your experience and apply will benefit.

This is a nice, practical example. Couple of things. On the communicator side, when you focus too much on money, your message gets corrupted. On the reader side, most of the time, you can feel the corruption.

You're preaching to the choir Shawn.

I've been telling my clients this stuff for since I began in the biz.

Admittedly, it's one of the most difficult mindset/attitude shifts to make - when you're in dire straights. But the faster this shift takes place, the more money people manifest.

    That's just reality.

    Great post..

You're right new marketers spend way to much time buying WSOs after WSOs and not taking action on any of them..

What really got me going was learning that you need to focus on something until you master it.. Then you can move on to the next.

Don't want to throw cold water on the general, deserved praise here, but there is one big elephant in the room, and that is competition and the ecology of business.
I just asked a partner this morning to check out global labor costs for various IM services and asked him to look at Fiverr for benchmarking, because that's where our competition is heading, IMO (not just Fiverr mind you, but re efficiency factors and globalization, etc.) If they are not, we are in any case.
Totally agree with Shawn about the utilitarian principle and offering solutions.
I have been a fanatic about problem-solving and finding solutions for the largest number of people for more years than I like to count. The solutions I focus on have to do with adding the most value, which includes the consideration of price.
Take a look at Amazon as an example, and Jeff Bezos' supposed fanaticism re customer service.
There is a lot more to all of this, of course, and there is a good solution to the competition issue, but most people do not want to bother to do the work, in part due to misplaced priorities as mentioned several times on this thread.

      Hello Anas,

Honestly your post about an easy way to make money throws up "red flags," but I am always willing to give somebody a chance.

You said that you haven't "tried." You know the Yoda quote? "There is no try, there is only do or not do."

Then what is "easy." Buy a lottery ticket. That is easy, but what are your chances?

Can you take action and follow through? If you can, I am willing to make a good suggestion, that is the "easiest" way I know.

Please be honest. Most people do not take action and do not follow through well enough.

If you are such a person, don't waste your time and mine.

      Best Wishes,

We all become more successful if we assist others to be successful. It's a law. And a hugely helpful one at that.
