You Need Money To Make Money - True Or False?

Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

Suppose you were teaching a class and someone
said.....

But you need money to make money.

How would you reply?

I would have to say that you don't necessarily NEED money to make money but it certainly helps out. Obviously with that being said, you don't need much money to make money, but often times it's easier to have short term success with having more money.

If you're looking for long term success, all you need is a willingness to succeed which doesn't involve any monetary value. You have to have that drive to be better than everyone else and prove to the people who said you couldn't make it, that you actually did make it. I love proving people wrong when they say I can't do something, and this is just one way of doing that.

You don't necessarily need money to make money
in the beginning, but to make any BIG money, you
    definitely need to make investments.

You always gotta put in something, if not money
then TIME. It's a basic trade off.

Personally I'd rather invest the money to make

Yes... time is an exchange for money. We only have so many minutes on this earth (as the Lord gives us breath). We can either work in exchange for money or give money in exchange for time. If I can hollow out a canoe with time in exchange for food, I have used money (resources) in exchange for someone else's money (time + skills).

If I can figure out a way to leverage my time (may 10 canoes in the time others make 1) then I can make much more money. So... yes and no. It takes no "money" to make money, but with the right skills, I can take a little money and turn it into many canoes :-^

You don't need money to make money, however, having money to get started will accelerate the process greatly.
You can start off small, and build up over time, if you have money to start with, you can start further up the "scale" then from scratch.

However - if you have the willingness, then you'll still go far, either way

You do not need money to make money.

The freebie methods do not make tons of money, but they can provide the funds needed for hosting, domain names, etc. Then they can help you build a more profitable business.

The trick is to re-invest your profits so you will be able to make more and more money.

    I disagree.

I have worked as a business development consultant for the past 19 years and I have created multi-million dollar businesses for as little as $100.00 on the table.

From my experience, there is never a money problem - there is only an idea problem. You come up with the right idea and the money will always be there.

The one rule I use with all clients is always start where you are with what you have - too many people get way in over their heads with financial debt, and instead of focusing on those things that will make the business successful, they focus on their debt and end up not doing what they need to do.

This is the same as the banks telling you you need three years to get over the hump before you can make any money. I have never developed a business for a client that did not make money the first day they opened their doors. No one has pockets deep enough to last three years without earning a profit.

When I started in IM, I had a day job that paid well

I started experimenting nights and weekend on various methods and really didn't invest much. Maybe $100 for a years hosting another $100 for some programs.

This wasn't because I didn't have the money to invest, but rather because I knew that spending lots of money upfront probably wasn't going to help me much as I had to understand the real root basics of what I was doing.

Over the course of my first year in IM, I went from $0 to about $3000 a month.

At this point I had a better handle on the industry and the ways the profits came and decided to invest some of my earnings.

At the start of my 2nd year I took a good portion of my earnings and started investing in various things.

Well this investment combined with my knowledge of how to properly invest it caused my earnings to rise to a point where I was able to leave my day job and become a full time Internet Marketer.

So I guess the moral of my story is that it is necessary to invest to get large $$ earnings, however investment without proper knowledge to guide it can be a perilous path.

Starting off with minimal finances meant we had to think smart!

When we first started we had spent a lot of time on our product. A lot of adjusting replanning and more adjusting. I do believe that if we had just thrown a lot of money at our project we probably would not have arrived with the successful product we have, and also we have learned a lot more by taking the time to build and grow, we have a good understanding of our product. WE know what works is current and relevant for our product.

Money can be made on line without spending money.

The first step is to recognize a starving audience.

I think we all agree that some investments need to be made in order to
    improve and progress our business.

I used to own an auto painting business. Expenses ran close to
30% of my gross sales. I watched paint increase in price 500%
over 10 years. Then throw in insurance, other supplies, etc., etc.

Internet marketing is nothing compared to that!

So, no. You don't need money. Just an on-line connection and some knowledge.

You need money to make money - true or false?

    True.

That is not to say it takes money to make MORE money. You need money to survive in the modern world. You have to eat, clothe, pay for medical, etc. No getting away from that.

So while you make money you have expenses whether they are investments into making more money or just using money to survive while you spend time to make money is the difference.

You need time. The more time, the more money you need.

It is definitely helpful to use money to make money though. If you have investment funds and use them appropriately you will need less time to make more money. So I would say yes.

You need money (to survive) to make money. You need money (investment) to make money faster.

I think the question might have been phrased:
Do you need to invest money to make more money?
    False
You need time (and as Macabhay says) you need desire, knowledge, and activity.
But then if you (and you should) consider your time valuable it would depend on if you place that value at a monetary level or enjoyment level.

For instance, I enjoy spending time with my family. So my time spent with my family is not monetarily valued. But, I also enjoy putting together new ideas and business plans for online businesses. And since in most cases the goal is to make more money then yes, I place a monetary value on my time.

Wow, I think I just confused myself.

I would have to disagree. Although having absolutely no money at all does complicate the process and make it much more difficult, it is very possible and probable for an individual to make money without an initial financial base.

In my opinion, the problem rests in the instant gratification one seeks with money. People tend to Want It All..All Right Away. Being driven is good, but patience and the desire to learn and build wealth is very important.

I am going to disagree with the trend here, because it most definitely takes money to make money,
You all are taking for granted some essential things that take money. Your computer, your internet connection, your hosting & domain, your autoreponder, to name a few. Those all take money. Without them, you couldn't make a dime on the internet.
Now, I sit here in front of my old Win 98 computer, on a dial up system. It takes me hours to do something that on broadband and a newer computer would take minutes.
My credit cards are overlimit right now. Can't afford a new computer, satellite connection or an autoresponder. I will one day. And I keep plugging along, because I never give up.
It would be far easier and I'd be making a lot more money than a few hundred a month if I had the funds to have the tools to be successful.

Can you Make money with no money? Yes.

I am doing this right now as we speak. In between surfing the warrior forum. I dont even have a website.

      Affiliate marketing using direct links?

Nope. You may find this idea unique:

I use free memberships to international b2b sites to connect truckload buyers and sellers together.

You find both the buyers and sellers on the same site and you create a brokering deal with the seller, and then you use that very same b2b site where you found the seller, to find a buyer.

Most sellers on b2b sites dont have any idea how to market to the buyers on the site.
They just join because the sales director said it was a good idea...

I have made many thousands of dollars doing this and sold many truckloads of liquidation merchandise overseas. ALL VIA EMAIL! Never costed me a single penny.

I am answering emails right now, in between surfing the warrior forum, on a couple of these deals, and it looks like a deal is about to close.

Seriously. I could forward you a 15k purchase order that was just emailed to me 30 minutes ago from China! No crap! That's why I am up at 4:56 am!

So anyway, There's a freebie idea for someone with alot of guts to really jump out of the box!!

I can spread this idea around because most people dont have the true motivation to pursue it anyway. But if you do, "More power to you...welcome aboard"! I am always happy to bless.

I hope this inspires and offers value to the forum.

Back to the subject at hand: The only thing you need to invest in is education and internet access. The first part you can get for free here at the warrior forum for only an investment of time.

      Regards,
      John Durham

Ps. If anyone knows how I can delegate this process, put it on auto pilot, and have others do all the work let me know, because it does take some time and effort coordinating these deals even though it is all via email. I'd like to work less if possible.

My opinion is no matter what you do it is going to take money to make money. Yes there is free things on the internet to make money but did that internet not cost you or that computer to be able to get to internet not cost you??? Everything comes with a price tag no matter what. I think also that the more money you have the easier time it can be to get started. I say this because 6 years ago when I started working from home I was very poor and bought the cheapest old computer I could find and worked off that old desktop for about 3 years I then got an old used laptop and had that for another year. Finally making enoug that I could design a computer from Dell and have a brand new computer. Working off the old equipment could be frustrating at times and because of the age of my computer did hold me back from some jobs o nthe internet so this is why I say it takes money to make money and that having money makes things easier because if I would have had any money it would have made my life easier starting out working from home.

      I say False;

You could have initial investment money and not have the talent to produce razor sharp copy. You might say I'll outsource it, but that's not you writing and that can reduce your start up money significantly.

You can have the start up cash, some talent and then still not make any money due to a lack of application, wanting it etc

Not really you just have to be creative and seriously driven. I may not have a dime to get what you just said but take this for example. I may not have a computer or internet but I can go to the library here and use theirs for free for a limited time per day to set up a free website and make use the limited time I have on the libraries computer to make about twenty dollars doing little things. Once I have about 50.00 I can get a cheap host for about 40.00 and a dot info domain for the time being. I can keep on using the libraries computer until I had about 150.00 then go on CL and find a good quality laptop with wifi for this much and then go to the library everyday and now be on the internet for as long as the library is open. Once I made about another 50.00 I can get getresponse which allows 10.000 names before they increase. Now all I have to do is use my time right and in no time I will be able to afford wifi at home now I can be on the computer for as long as I want. Which means I can make more money once I have a couple hundred dollars I can begin to outsource some of my work and leverage the little money that I made. Within a year I could be making a good liveable income. How did I do this all. By using a free computer with free internet at the library which is free to get started. Then used free internet resources while inferior they might be worked to get me started. Then used the minimal money I made to get low cost paid resources. Then continued to upgrade I I was able to use more time to make more money. For instance the computer that I am working on now I got for 145.00 on CL and it is a good one. You just have to know how to make the most with what you have got. Where there is a will there is a way.

It's really more of a debate. You have question if you are assumed to have zero money at all, nothing to spend on anything at all - not even food and other basic neccessities.
But you can make money without needing money, you can start by getting a J.O.B. You don't need money to make money from most of the jobs.

If it's starting your own business we're talking about, truth is, to a certain extent. You will NEED money to even begin to start making money. Investment in the basic like a computer, a domain and hosting package or even to buy that piece of cloth for a cleaning business. They all need money.

Most important thing you need is focus and determination to make money.

    Sometimes I agree with that,

How about starting with a free blog and doing the
      write-ups yourself?

      No PPC, webhosting and outsourcing.

Just a paypal account, some adsense and a decent
affordable report you can email to those who subscribe.

It doesn't have to be about making money and the
      domain name can come later.

I think too many people have been fed the idea that
unless you are making $10,000 a week overnight it's

You don't need any money to make money....
It's who you know that makes you money NOT what you have.
I started a business without using any of my money. I personally knew of 2 multi-millionaires. I showed them my business plan and they both gave me $50,000 checks. I had no money to start the business but I knew someone else that did.
I take my family to a private vacation home in the Smokey Mountains. This is a cedar mansion beside a Big Lake. It is completely furnished with everything to live there. It even includes sat TV and a big boat. We can go there anytime for 3 day weekend without paying a dime. Why? Because I have made friends with the owners.

Think we all need money it's a fact of life: The question is how much?

We have all or most of us lived through decades of greed and avarice, the more we have the more we spend, better home, better car, better food etc.

There is no option unless you have been blessed with inherited wealth but to earn money in one form or another. The more you put in the more you get out.

A classic example and you can see this world wide is, large food chains in supermarkets who buy shelf space, sell product for a loss until the competition has to give up then, dominate the market. "When money talks everyone listens"

If you want to make real money on line and not pocket money then, you do need money to make money-IMO.

I honestly can not seperate the two at this point. So if the question is straight up do you need money to make money - then yes you do because no one can make money without time.

Every second I am putting into a new business is money I am not making doign soemthing else - that is why I can not seperate them.

If you want to get 100% literal then, no you don't need physical cash money to make money. However, it helps a great deal and if you want to make serious money you need to use some.

I think having some money can sometimes be a stumbling block to making more money. That is probably the reason why most people remain poor or average all their lives. You see, if you have some money, you are often afraid to take risks as you tend to fear losing what you already own.One the other hand, if you have no money, you have no fear of losing as you have nothing to lose.

I have read countless stories of successful and rich people whose lives turn around when they are dead broke and have absolutely nothing (in fact, they are often in debt).Anthony Robbins is a classic example.

Another example is the self-made property millionaire, Carly Crutchfield, who is a property mentor. She was about 22 years old when she made her first million. She then decided to give away everything as she didn not want to be attached to her money. She travelled overseas helping the poor. When she returned to Australia, she had no money. But within 1 year, she made her first million again and is now a multi-millionaire.

So, my conclusion is: you do not need money to make money. What you need is the right mindset, creativity, determination, focus, persistence and the belief that you can achieve whatever you want to have

I would aggree - however it's all a matter of degree.
To start a local business (like a shop) you need $100,000 upward to set and and stock up.
A direct mail - like a mail order business you'd need probably $20,000 to do it properly.

An internet business you can set up with a couple of thousand bucks (much less if you do all the work yourself - but I'd rather just pay the cash and work with professionals who get a top job done fast.

you can start a trading account for shares with $2000.
you can start trading forex with less than $100. (but you have to know what you're doing in both cases which often costs money or a lot of time)

If you want to make money while spending absolutely No money then all you can do is labor because everything else takes at least a few bucks.

Surely though, most people can raise a few hundred bucks if they were truly focused on creating some wealth.

Franky if you are not willing to do what it takes to raise a few hundred to a few thousand bucks to get you started then your chances of becoming rich a very poor!

You have to think rich to get rich, there's no point in being a tightarse with setting up your business because that will be the essence of your entire business life, and no-one will want to buy your products.

Of course you need money to make money. I agree with Bert: if you don't have the basic tools to begin, you cannot make money with your work. On the other hand, there is a famous dictate which says that "money attracts money".

If you have money to invest, you can easily make a lot more.

Not really. It's just that once you have enough money, making money is inevitable. When you have a certain amount of money over and above what you spend day-to-day, the money you don't spend will generate more money than you spent - without any work, effort, or attention from you.

Let's use an example. Most of us wouldn't be too unhappy with a hundred thousand dollars a year, right? So think about this. If you had three million dollars, and you stuck it in a plain old everyday savings account at 3.5% interest, the interest from that account would be over a hundred thousand dollars a year.

So if you could just keep your grubby hands off that three million dollars, you would have a hundred thousand dollars a year, and you would never need to lift a finger. And if you were happy with a hundred thousand a year, you would never even be tempted to touch that three million.

But that's only one way to make money, and I'm guessing none of us are using it, or we wouldn't be here.

(and now back to your regularly scheduled class)

I'd say the answer is fairly straight forward.

You don't need money to get started, but you do need something to invest, such as your own time and effort. You will never get money for nothing.

At the same time, the more money you have, the more you can make. As you make more money, you can reinvest in yourself, and begin to experience an exponential growth pattern.

I think this when the term cause and effect come into play. In todays world energy and money are kind of twin brothers. What you put in you surely will get out. If there is no money in your possession then all you have is energy, you most definitely should us it. On the other if the money, funds is available use it, it will have the same effect.

I would have to say that I think that you don't always need money- you can sometimes trade talent for service.
Saying that you need money might just be an excuse and if you really need the money you'll think about every way you can get it. Even if you have to beg until you get enough to do what needs to be done.

If you have the will to do something, the lack of money will not get in your way!

True. Even if one have the talents to earn money with, he would still at least need some money to buy some food or drink to remain alive till he is paid.

I think the essence should be how much money is needed to make ten, twenty or one thousand dollars.

No it's not true, well you can make money faster if you use money, but lets say you make a site, if you don't know how to code, you use blogger.
Then you install a nice theme, and you start publishing articles daily. But once enough is published, you work on the SEO, build backlinks, and etc, this can all help a lot, you earn from adsense. Simple and easy.

Bull ****. I started my ghosting service on less than $50 bucks. I wouldn't even have spent that much, except I paid for membership to E1kad, and that was where I got my bright idea to sell my writing services, so I consider that part of my start-up costs.

Had I skipped that part and decided to go the entirely free route, I could have:

    1. Set up a services blog on Blogger.com- Not the most professional, BUT workable and FREE.

    2. Typed up sample articles, put them in a folder, and hit the pavement visiting local businesses, marketing my writing skills. If they wanted a website, I'd refer them to number 1! Not fun, but again..FREE.

    3. Run an ad on every free site I could find, marketing my services, and start marketing on free related forums. Again...FREE.

And myriad other ways to market yourself that don't cost a dime, beyond a bit of sweat. And by market yourself I mean market services. You don't have to have money to sell a service you just need a service you can sell.

If you think there isn't something worthwhile you can do worth selling, rethink that. Make a list and write down all those things you are good at. Guaranteed at least ONE of them is a service you can market that other people can't or don't like to do themselves.

I started out at a meager $5 and $6 bucks an article, landed my first few projects the very first week I set up shop, invested some of the profit back into my business to make my service perceived as even more professional, used some of the cash to continue my marketing and writing education, and never looked back.

If you hate to write, what about other things? Techie skills, general labor skills, financial management skills, customer service skills, heck even just the ability to type or do some research. There WILL be SOMETHING you can do better than others, that you can flip the script with and actually charge for. Then it's just a matter of marketing, and just look around this forum for all the free ways to do THAT, other than what I listed above.

    Warm regards,
    Cori Padgett

I would say you might not necessarily need money to make money. But of course, paying will ensure you better services.

What is more correct is that you need investment to make money. The investment might not be monetary - could be time and all, but it's an investment afterall. There's an opportunity cost for using that time which gives your time a "monetary value".

    Just my 2 cents!

They say that Money is a way of keeping score.

There are millions of examples of people with unlimited resources that go broke quickly, and even more stories about the ones who started with nothing and built empires.

There are so many more critical things necessary... I think money falls way down the list.

This statement is false. You don't need money to make money. Although having money does help get things started.

What you really need to make money is a combination of: determination, ability to learn from failure, and in some cases a little bit of luck.

I'm going to have to go with false, and it also has a lot to do with your mindset. There is a ton of ways to make money out there, but if one doesn't have the mindset to do it, they won't.

So if one doesn't have the mindset, they won't have to spend money on tools to make money although they probably will, they need to spend money on getting rid of their head trash.

For my answer I'd like to quote Dan Kennedy who said that if you can't make money without money, you can't make money with money. With the internet, you can write and submit articles, set up a wordpress blog and monitize with Adsense, Amazon, Clickbank, etc.

I would have to answer false. You can make money without spending it. I remember a few years ago, when PayPal wasn't even available in my country how I made a forum and got about 300$ check from google adsense. I was using a free host back then and the profit was 100%. Of course it did take a few months, but I did spend nothing!

With a good solid plan and dedication you can succeed without spending a dime. Of course it would take time, and if you want to speed up the process you would want to spend some money.

If you were teaching a class and thus wanted to impart 'best practice' then I'd say that any business, including businesses that use the internet as a means of reachng one's market require money. After all, even things such as hosting require money.

What is true is that one can exchange labour for money in some instances (sweat equity) it is not a universal truth. Life and business are much improved by the use of money. Money is a 'force multiplier' as it enables the user of money to buy in services from people well skilled at the service provision. For example, I CAN do my own link building, I can write articles but if I am better at writing articles than link building then it is probably better for me to pay somebody to do link building and for me to write more articles. This is a more efficient use of my time but I need cash to do this. I CAN do both and I accept that my business is, as a result less efficient than it could be.

So, you do not need much money to make money but you will almost certainly need some!

you can also "lose it if you don't know how to use it" so it sound like a big FALSE
unless... you invest it to >>>
    >>>LEARN HOW TO EARN >>> which by then you could say MONEY helps.
well the bottom line is what you need is:
