People always pretty much only talk about motivation in terms of beliefs and possibilities etc.

Sure the belief in successes and getting what you want can be motivating.

Though before that, the first motivation, even the motivation to WANT those things in the first place, is much more about health and energy.

If you're burnt out from chronic struggle and burden, stressed, or exhausted from sleep deprivation, have emotional energy depletion from disappointments of lack of returns from investments and things you put so much energy and hope into, if you have no social life cause you put all your attention on work, if you don't have a good diet and don't exercise, if your dopamine is depleted etc.

All those types of things can lead to feeling very little energy, especially positive energy and inspiration.

It's difficult to feel motivated for anything when nothing feels rewarding or is even desirable cause you feel so terrible and burnt out. Then everything seems like such a heavy burden and redundant and you lose your inspiration as you think "I'm just so Tired of all this!" Not only tired of the negative or difficult stuff, though tired of all of it, of everything. Even the 'positive' stuff becomes annoying and feels so repetitive and boring and draining.

When you feel that sort of depletion, inspirational quotes of motivation and "You can do it!" stuff has little meaning or effect on you.

The first state of motivation is taking care of personal health, sleep, balance of life, good food, exercise, entertainment, social life etc. All the things to replenish your energy and make you feel good, giving you surges of dopamine, serotonin.

Sometimes that's a catch 22 though when you have to gain some success before bad lifestyle things (like sleep) can be improved.

Though simply stating the obvious truth here. It's more than belief you need!

    I am 35 ,
at 25 i was working a job where my shift changed virtually every week.and it was a stressful job where murphy's law play in almost every night in fact i think i was placed on the shift with the most chance something would go wrong..eventually i walked out after a major break down

5 years later i was working another stressful job that led to repeated small back injuries ..so i was working hurt for several years ..and at that point my bi polar disorder just caused a full melt down ..and when i got on meds the result was not good .

As i have dug down the last year or two and worked on healing much of the damage done to my body ,my mind and my ego..i realized we are never taught how to really take care of ourselves . in fact some of the ways ..working out or diets can and do cause damage when they don't fit the person .

many people have a dark night of the soul .. i just slogged through a dark 15 years of the soul .

but we must sometime live very badly for a long while before we figure out how to live the best we can for ourselves .

in the process of restoring my health ..which is far from complete i have found the way i want to live the is much better than the alternatives. it is just a matter of cleaning up a few messes and ending a few patterns before i fully get on that path ..and that work is nearly done .

    • I believe you must live in the now, be appreciative of every thing you've got. Yes have dreams, but don't let them let you forget what you already have

I try to use my pain as fuel. When I'm feeling down I think to myself what is the point? There are people in situations that are 10x as bad as mine, I should be grateful for my situation.

I just try to remember that no matter what is happening to me there is somebody out there in a much more difficult situation that would love to be in my situation.

It's funny because the people in really terrible situations are usually the ones that become highly successful. I think one of the reasons is that they use the negative energy and pain in their lives as fuel to push forward because they know that through hard work and determination they can change their lives for the better.

I agree that motivation is more than belief. It's something deep within that helps you get up after falling down. It actually comes in many ways. It could be deep seated belief in what you are doing, in own ability or even an insight into an issue or the way things work.

I have found that we all have in us the ability to do much more than we think we can. So I am always looking for ways to do things better. Recently I have discovered online marketing and I am exploring making a living online. Times really do get tough but it take a whole lot to shake what you know. I would encourage us all to seek to know that you can do far more than you give yourself credit for.

Many successful people have said that their biggest motivation, their driving force, has been the fear of being poor.

Many came from a poor background, and certainly don't want to go back, once they have made it big.

  • I like your thread, pip. A lot of clear thought and expression went into your expression. I was able to follow it precisely. And, I agree with your conclusion about taking care of the body and its diurnal and nocturnal needs.

Once the body is up and running in a fit way, and perhaps only this way, can we really begin to succeed and come into our own. With enough intention and proper action the "Catch 22" will be resolved. - - Call it "action inspired Faith".

    Good post. Thanks, pip.

Charles Duhigg in the Power of Habit talks about identifying and acquiring keystone habits.

These are small actions that when consistently done have a waterfall effect on everything else.

For many people, it's exercise. For me, it was daily writing.

  • YOU are your own true source of motivation. You control it. You decide to turn it on or off. You choose to give it life or to sentence it to prison. You make those changes, without the help of experts or the knowledge of professionals or even the regular participation in motivational speeches and programs.

I was extremely exhausted and low on energy when I wrote that which is what made me think about it and how important it is. Motivation is a high energy emotion, so it obviously requires energy to feel it and maintain it. Positive thoughts alone don't produce energy. Energy is something that needs to be recovered and renewed constantly after expended, and sometimes simply reserved for best uses of it.

There is a book that explains it far better than I ever could. Managing energy, not time, is the key to high performance.
The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy,...The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy,...

Here is a summary of the books principles:

I agree with you here. You should be healthy both mentally and physically. It's hard to motivate yourself if you are weak. Great post!
