You Are What You Eat: Maintaining Your Energy Levels

If you were to liken your body to a machine in Western Medicine, or that of a garden in certain Eastern medicinal practices, then you'd know that eating wrong pulls the brakes on your system.

Cravings are temporary - Feeling bad is forever. Sacrifice is temporary - Hard work lasts for a long time.

The research is always out - But the problem is that people are too committed to their own lifestyles to make a change. These aren't "sugar-coated" media headlines, these is based off scientific research via statistical analyses and real experiments, peer-reviewed by the scientific community.

It takes far more effort these days to get past the marketing of food, as well as the addition of preservatives and unknown chemicals in your daily food. Let's face it: More people are dying of heart disease and tons of other illnesses.

I'm not even kidding, take a look at the stats yourself: Interactive Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke

While life expectancy may seem to have increased, an increased number of people are suffering from the Big 3 diseases. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but here are the words taken straight out of the horse's mouth (The Heart Foundation):

  • Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States, claiming approximately 1 million lives annually.
  • Every 33 seconds someone in the United States dies from cardiovascular disease which is roughly the equivalent of a September 11th-like tragedy repeating itself every 24 hours, 365 days a year.
  • More die of heart disease than of AIDS and all cancers combined.
  • By 2020, heart disease will be the leading cause of death throughout the world.
  • This year more than 920,000 Americans will have a heart attack; nearly half of them will occur without prior symptoms or warning signs.
  • 250,000 Americans die annually of Sudden Cardiac Death – 680 every day of the year.
  • One-half of the victims of Sudden Cardiac Death are under the age of 65.
  • An estimated 80 million Americans have one or more types of heart disease.
  • About 8.9 million Americans have chest pain (angina) caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle which occurs when the coronary arteries become blocked with a build-up of plaque.
  • Currently about 7.9 million Americans are alive who have had a heart attack.
  • In 2008, the total cost of cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, hypertensive disease, heart failure and stroke) in the U.S. was estimated at $448.5 billion. (This includes direct costs such as costs of doctors, hospital services, medications, etc., and indirect costs such as lost productivity.) In comparison, the estimated economic cost of cancer in 2007 was $219 billion.
Just a simple change to your diet (like your breakfast), can go a long way. For example, ingesting protein and complex carbs over simple carbs for breakfast can boost your energy levels can make you feel very productive over the whole of your day.

What do you Warriors think? Are you already making changes to your diet, or do you want to pick up the challenge?

I have been amazed with nutrition for a good part of my life!

I totally agree with this, I see a lot of mind set questions that can be greatly impacted with diet alone... But that change is completely personal and can not be forced!

I do however feel the need to remind warriors to keep their nutrition tip top as it goes hand in hand with the title of this thread -

    "you are what you eat!"

A simple one is broccoli, broccoli contains a chemical called DIM which helps both male and female bodies excrete excessive estrogen which can lead to brain fog and just an overall unproductive day.

Now I hate broccoli, thats why I blend it it a magic bullet with some greens powder supplements.
( strawberry flavor ) It still tastes earthy, but its doable!

At the end of the day we are constantly surrounded with out side factors that can have harmful effects on the body, even though most are microscopic, they build up fast but before you 'feel' any different its already too late!

Start your day of right. First with a high nutritious breakfast, then and only then, start your IM domination

      Right on, Rsherwood.

To add on, here's a scientific journal on research:

The Link Between Physical Health and Procrastination

Seems like your procrastination might be indirectly linked... to your own physical health as well!!!

The bulletproof executive also has an excellent post on "hidden chemicals" - mycotoxins in your daily food: The Molding of the World Part 1: How We Made Mycotoxins into the Health Disaster They Are Today

And Tim Ferriss has a bio-hack on it: The Manhattan Project to End Fad Diets

The Mediterranean Diet is probably one of the most scientifically-supported ones.

if you pay attention to how your body reacts to the food you eat you will have a much better grounding on how you should eat ..

the first thing is to boost your immune building foods intake ..mushrooms garlic and many different herbs and spices ..also if you can get a salad garden going ..a lot of the food you buy in stores any part of the store is covered or filled with toxins.. so use herbs every day and stay hydrated..

i switched to starting every day or almost every day frying up onions mushrooms and garlic ..loading it with spices the cooking scambled eggs and though i have put on weight .. i know have much more muscle mass than any other time in my life .. i personaly can't eat red meat anymore ..and i have had to sat away from deep fried foods ..

though i love cheese i cannot stand any kind of milk anymore ..

learn what your body wants and figure out why you are craving what you are craving ..

once i get money coming in or get where i want to get i want to get a grain mill and grind my own wheat ..for bread and pasta ..i also want more fish so i am trying to get to more tropical areas .

"Cravings are temporary - Feeling bad is forever. Sacrifice is temporary - Hard work lasts for a long time." Great perspective there, James Fame!
Want to totally knock out a sugar craving, every time? Either drink some apple cider vinegar, or eat a dill pickle - sugar craving..GONE! Try it!

i have problems with my teeth ..and sugar is the only thing that causes a problem ...the 30 second of yum yum ..is not worth the 5-10 minutes of agony ..

That's exactly why it is such a good strategy to knock the problem out right at the source - destroy the craving and there will be no desire. Have some apple cider vinegar or some sour pickles and your body, not just your mind, will reject sugar - you just won't want it. Repeat as needed
