Is Coffee (Caffeine) good or bad? Any connection to weight gain

Hi Folks,

The story is I am a coffee addict. I need to to have it with lots of sugar. Being on the large side (110 Kg, 6 feet guy ) I want to know if coffee is affecting my weight. Will it lead to weight gain a.k.a belly fat? Should I cut off the sugar and continue with the caffeine?

If coffee is bad, any thoughts on how to get rid of this addiction is appreciated. Thank you.

Coffee won't cause weight gain, but loading it up with sugar definitely can. A standard cup of black coffee has about 2 calories. A teaspoon of sugar contains about 15 calories, and a tablespoon contains 45 calories. It can add up pretty quickly.

coffee can be good.. but if you are not getting proper nutrition. and you are not sleeping enough to wake up without needing coffee to get going ..

improper sleep or a sleep that is not restful ..is a bigger effect on weight than anything.. if yo are consuming food to boost energy ..instead of feed the body

Caffeine is a stimulant, which is an appetite suppressant. Plus, regular coffee has little, if any calories.

However, if you put a bunch other stuff in it, then the calories can add up quickly.

Also, caffeine displaces certain minerals, such as calcium, from being digested. Not to mention the acid issue; very bad for the stomach.

Black coffee in itself has been shown to increase lipolysis when taken before aerobic activity ( lipolysis - shuttling of fats to be used as energy )

The sugar needs to go if your worried about weight gain. It sucks, but on average, it will take the human body three weeks to adjust to the new taste.

Another factor is, too much of any stimulant can lead to higher cortisol levels, which is one of the major stress hormones. Hopefully you know that the more stressed you are, the more fat you tend to store on average!

So to some it up, when you ingest sugar and do not use it as energy, generally people store it as fat + the potentially higher cortisol that you have circulating around your body. This quickly adds up and it does not do your figure any favours. Not to mention adrenal fatigue which is what I am currently recovering from, due to a over use of pre workout stims. ( High caffeine content )

For me, nothing beats a strong black coffee first thing. However, to spread my energy throughout the day in a more subtle manor, I use herbs such a Rhodiola and Koren Red Ginseng.

Stimulant dependance is a very real thing, also consider L- tyrosine. Its great for alleviating that " OMG, I need a coffee" feeling.

Dont beat yourself up too much though, the human body has an immense capability of recovering, its just your duty to give it all the help it can get!

    All the best,

    Red

    • Personally I don't see a problem with ingesting lots of coffee. People have been doing that for a very very long time. The sugar has to go. It will lead to obesity and diabetes. Sugar is so sweet to the taste, so satisfying, and such a crippling killer.

I wanted to add an energy stimulant idea to Rusherwood's unique list: I just began "Earthing" or grounding the body by sleeping on a universal Earthing (grounding) mat attached to an electrical socket's ground jack that has been continuity checked for clear ground to earth.

After just one night of Earthing (physically placing my body in touch with Earth ground by a mat and wires) I had no desire for coffee all day long in spite of the fact I worked in the garden and house painted. Only now late into the evening have I had the desire for "Joe".

Everybody is advised to check out "Earthing" and see if it interests them. I'm a believer.

LLS are you serious? That sounds AMAZING!

Never have I heard of that, for sure I am going to give that a go!

A google search should be good for a source?

    p.s I liked the Rush-erwood

Hi there, coffee is fine if it is moderation. Coffee is a natural laxative..however.. I find coffee overall is bad for your system. I practice Reiki and I avoid coffee and tea and energy drinks before. If I drink to much coffee I find that buy the end of the day i feel very out of balance. I think the general rule with most things, is just have things in moderation.

Hi there, I am a trainee hypnotherapist, and i have also had hypnotherapy work done on my self. I would look into that as an option, with a good therapist you could knock this on the head.

I believe coffee is good if taken in moderation since it's an antioxidant but it will also depend on how you make your coffee. If you put a lot of sugar in it, then I think you should cut it back. I know someone who drinks a lot of coffee and doesn't it much. She suffered from UTI and some kidney problems. I am not sure if it's mostly about drinking too much coffee but it's one of the reasons.

I drink a lot of coffee every morning and have another cup in the afternoon after my power nap.

Part of my 30 second commute to work every morning starts at the coffee pot.

I have had 4 cardiac arrests and 2 heart attacks in my life. The first in 1995 when I quit smoking. The last was in 1998 when I was 38 years old. Up to that point I was not much of a coffee drinker.

As I have gotten older I love coffee and it has not had any negative effect on my health. I do use sugar free creamers and the lack of sugar has helped my weight and helped to eliminate Angina on most days.

Internet marketing at home and coffee are the perfect combination as far as I am concerned.

you have an addictive nature. Thats fantastic news, so try to find something really positive, fun and good for you that you can get addicted too. Re the sugar why not at least substitute it with agave to begin with and start a slow withdraw.

Set yourself a goal like this

week one 10% reduction of sugar and caffeine ( have a couple of decafs)

    week two 20%

and so on until you are happy with maybe 2 cups a day and make one of those a decaf.

Add in to this a good healthy amount of water.

    then think about this

you need to feel secure, you need fun, challenges, excitement, you need to feel love and to connect to people, you need to feel special and important, you need to grow and to give something to your world.

Think about those needs and all the wonderful things you could do to meet them and then go get addicted to those things that really make life worth living. You wont need a diet the weight will leave all by itself.

Coffee is a stimulant which means it can actually help with weight loss. What's not good is adding cream and sugar to it - what's even worse is adding artificial sweeteners though. If you need to sweeten it, try a dash of honey.
Too much coffee is bad for you (can cause anxiety, tachycardia and dehydration among other things) but 1 - 2 cups per day is good. I drink a cup in the morning and before going to the gym or martial arts club. It's great for mental focus and can also improve sports performance.

I agree with JB his advice is excellent.. dont use chemicals to sweeten your coffee. A little coffee is a really good thing, a lot of coffee is horrible for your body esp if your dehyraded too

I am also a coffee addict, but I only take sugar like 1 or 2 teaspoons but not more than that, cause sugar is very harmfull to your health if you overtake it and it can cause you sugar levels messed up later in life which can be real bad.

I used to do a couple cups a day; one in the morning and another after around noon.

What tends to happen for those who routinely drink is a feeling of needing the coffee simply to function rather than function better or more efficiently than without.

This is what most do not intend since the act of drinking coffee is to get an extra pick-me-up rather than an illusioned boost to normal functioning. Once you habituate yourself to expect the coffee, you'll need it to function at your base levels, so the extra boost sort of dissolves within the reduced effect of it's continued use.

With that said I do not drink coffee unless it is a dire situation and I need the extra alertness that comes from drinking it periodically. Otherwise, with regular drinking, I'd be paying to stabilize myself to levels of normal functioning which I should be at anyway

Everything in Moderation. Coffee is not terrible for you but what you put in it can add up.

    If you put in 3 sugars thats around 50 calories.. if you have 3 coffees a day thats 150 calories ... * 5 days/week * 52 weeks = 39000 calories

    just sayin'

You blamed coffee when the sugar was more relevant, so I'm thinking it's actually the pizza.
