Read books in English. Read grammar books. Write articles so you get practice and seek opinions on your work.

In school I had a friend they told to watch TV to help improve his English speaking skills. I am not really sure that it helped a whole lot. I don't believe they had captioning back then, it might have been more effective.

There is no fast way to it. I would say look for a buddy you can speak English with everyday. Read books to give you a good feel on grammar. Watch English TV programs to help you with the pronunciations. But if you really want to fast track it, get an English-speaking boyfriend or girlfriend. That should make learning very interesting.

Read good writers, e.g., H. L. Mencken, Bertrand Russell, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, Arthur Conan Doyle, George Bernard Shaw. These are just a handful of the many great writers I admire, but they could occupy and entertain you, collectively, for a good many years.

      Hello xBartu,

For improving your "everyday" English I recommend watching movies and reading books.

For your "technical" English - buy a dictionary and learn the words and phrases.

Watch movies in English, with subtitles. If not, you could start speaking with English speakers face-to-face. it's one thing to be able to talk to them online, but it's completely different when you actually have to speak the language.

I learned quite a bit of Arabic while working at a pizza shop.

But along the way I also taught them English.

I'd suggest working with someone who speaks English and wants to learn your own language.

      Hey xBartu,
I have recently been reading and learning about psycho-cybernetics. It is a concept where you listen to what you want to learn as you are sleeping or doing normal everyday activities. The idea is that it trains your subconscious mind while distracting your conscious mind. If your interested, do a search for "psycho-cybernetics". There is an abundance of information on it and several people have used it to learn a language. Give it a go and let us know how you do with it. Good luck!

    1. Learn English phrases, not individual words.
    2. Do not study grammar rules.
    3. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN. Learn with your ears, not with your eyes. (From 1 to 2 hours a day!)
    4. Learn deeply. This means repeating what you learn again and again, many times for a long time.
    5. Listen to point of view stories.
    6. Use real English materials, not text books.
    7. Listen-and-answer mini stories.

I think honesty is the best rule to learn something. If you plan to learn English 20 minutes a day. In one day you must spend 20 minutes to learn it. No matter in that day you are very tired.

Watching, reading, listening english materials about your interest. Only what is interesting for you.

Read loudly. Listen tapes even if you can not focus on it. Your brain will learn without your focus. Do it as much as you can, every day.

If you are in an English speaking city, go out to a local mall and sit in the galleria and listen to people talking near by. Try to understand what is being said in context. Many times, you will recognize words. Practice what you hear. That's just one technique. If you would prefer, you can download and listen to audio translations of stories online and listen on your iPod. Then 'read' the same story in print form. This is how young children learn. They look at the page in a book while the parent is reading the words. This will help the words stick in your mind. Don't forget to practice what you are listening to, rehearsing as many times as needed till it becomes part of your vocabulary.

      Pretty much this.

I used to work for a company in Asia and was the only native speaker. People having to speak English to me (I barely spoke any of the local language) helped to improve theirs greatly.

I also taught a bit on the side; private tuition (more expensive admittedly) is far better than a classroom. Even an hour per day for 4 or 5 days a week will assist you greatly.

Books, courses and all that are fine however the best way to do it is to throw yourself into the fire.

Everyday for two hours go out into a populated area and strike up conversations with strangers, just ask them the time ask them about the weather and if you see it gets a bit uncomfortable say you have to go and bounce.

You can also go to convenience stores and start talking to cashiers and ask them about anything you want in the store.

This will build practical ways of using the things you learned from the books and courses that you take.

Also since this will make you uncomfortable at first it will naturally spike up your motivation levels to such highs that when reading books about grammar and such your RAS will be 100% focuses on learning what you need.

    Hope this helps

Read English materials, either books, newspapers, and more. Don't be too independent on text books because usually it's teaching you the formal English language. You might get confused with how English is being used in conversations. Watch news, movies, and TV shows that are in English language. Most importantly, have English-speaking friends to talk to at least an hour or more each day. This will not be an overnight process but eventually in a few months you'll be better.

      Hope this helps you!

Good grammar does help, but don't let it slow you down. Work on one grammar issue at a time until you've got it nailed. Then move on to the next one, and so on.

In the meantime, read and speak/listen as much as you can. I haven't seen many references to magazines, but those as well as newspapers can really helpful. You want to learn "normal" or "colloquial" English, not stilted English. Well, of course that will depend on what you plan to do with your English.

One more tip: Find a Toastmasters club! They have them all over the world. You can find them at Toastmasters DOT org I think, or google them.

You learn public speaking while also practicing their English, and they are really great at giving feedback.

      Good luck!

Aside from reading English materials and watching English movies or tv shows, listening to English audio lessons will be of great help. It is also good to listen to English songs and follow along (maybe by reading the lyrics) as to how the words are being pronounced. That's how I learned English and these methods were also used by one of my professors. And talk to native English speakers. ;-)
