Don't make the same Mistakes... (My Moment of Truth)

This message is mostly for new warriors:
I want you to save time and to avoid to reproduce the same mistakes I've done on the road to make money on the internet.

I've had successes on that road, but I also lost a lot of time doing crap and trying to find shortcuts.

Please read that list carefully, it's from my own experience online (I started 3 years ago).

1) Don't try to find shortcuts: You won't make 1,000$ overnight, at least, not at the begining. Maybe some people will tell you it's possible, but trust me, it's not.

2) If you are not proud of it, don't do it: Never invest time or money or efforts in developing something that you are not proud of, or that you wouldn't sell to your friends or family. When you invest your time, which is your most valuable asset, do it for a good reason. Would you really sell that ebook about how to cure breast cancer to your old grandma' ?

3) Build relations: Good relations are very useful in online business. You'll always go further with people you can work with or who you can help.

4) Give good value so that people want to spend their money: When you develop a product or a website, make sure to give good content to your readers or customers. Don't waste your time, your readers' time or your customers' money. Be respectful to the people who read what you've written and who purchase what you sell.

5) Stop postponing action: Stop reading that list now (ok, you can read until the end...), take a piece of paper, turn OFF your computer and start thinking how you can make that money online. But remember : always have a business plan in mind.

6) Take 5 minutes to think before you turn ON your computer: I think it's one of the most useful advice. Your computer is a tool, if you don't need it, don't use it. Do you spend time watching an axe when you are not cutting wood ? Stop wasting time doing nothing. You are not acting, you are just dreaming. I think for most people (including me a few months ago...), 80% of the time spent online is wasted or at least not 100% productive...

7) Evaluate the time you spend: At the end of the day, take a piece of paper and write down what you did to increase your incomes. Be honest. If you can't write at least 3 things in the first 30 seconds, then you wasted your time. And "looking for ideas on WF" is not something you can write in that 3-points - list, you know it...

8) Give before you ask: Stop alway asking for help and start helping people. Try to spend time resolving their problems. You'll make them happy and you'll meet opportunities. Stop being selfish and greedy.

9) Don't blog if you have nothing to say: I see hundreds of people blogging and writing about their challenges and their "incomes reports" about how they made 10$ a month promoting hosting services or aweber...Guess what: no one give a damn. If you don't have anything interesting to write, just don't.
Reach at least one goal, help people, get some experience and then you can start writing your own blog.

10) Stop jumping from one idea to another one: Just find a good idea, something that you are interested in and that can be monetized with a good business plan and then put all your efforts in it. Do it for one month without doing anything else. Then take one day OFF to think about what you've done during that month. Have you reached your goals ? have you made money ? If not, it's time to go to the forum to ask for help, but not after your first day of labor...

11) If you don't want to invest money, that means you don't trust your project: If you don't want to spend 20$ buying a domain name and a hosting, that mean you don't even think you are able to make 20 bucks from your idea. You are wasting your time...

Hope this list will help you.
I wish I could have had that kind of advices a few years ago, it would have saved me a lot of time...

Yeah, this one is very hard to avoid: my solution is FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.

And I always keep a TO DO and NOT TO DO LIST next to me.

Fantastic post, I also agree with no ten it can be very easy to jump from idea to idea especially when first starting out.

No 6 is a good one too. I can be guilty of turning on the computer and spending a few unproductive hours not doing much at all when the time would be better spent getting inspiration elsewhere.

Yes, I think I will introduce a day without computer in my week and see how it goes.

I'll jsut go back to old paper and pencil.
I'll make a thread after a month of try

thanks, man! we really appreciate that!

    here's one from personal experience:

do GTD-david-allen-vertical-project-planning for your online projects... or a RPM (result-oriented purpose-driven massive action plan) of tony robbins' for your online v entures!

aka close pc / laptop - take a piece of paper - draw a mindmap or a plan, prioritize, focus on essential 20%... then be laser focused

that's it - will leave now to watch the trees

    Great list!

To build on #3, network EVERY DAY!

Do some research and find the top few forums for IM AND JVs. Then, sign up (even if it costs a little money), and make a specific number of useful posts in each place every day.

Over time, people will come to recognize you, and when you need help, you are more likely to have volunteers.

Relationships are all about progression over time. You'll need this later, so put some effort into it, and plan for at least an extra month of work due to time spent on this!

It will be a lot of work, but you'll never know how glad you are for it until you need it. ^_~*

    Terrific points!

I've been using No. 7 - keep a daily journal of your progress as well as problems / obstacles. This will increase your awareness of what you are doing and where you are going.

Journaling is a very powerful tool for change.

    Best,

      Best,
      Yeah, I think it's a great idea.

I also try to measure variables of the business as much as I can.
That way I know what I have to change to be more efficient .
"What gets measured gets managed", right ?

    Cool stuff dude!

Youtube is a nightmare for me! haha ( those thumbnails just get me every time! )

But again, even Youtube is a tool when you know how to use it!

I for sure agree with pre planning for the day... Creating a mind map for myself is better than keeping a to do list.

The interesting thing you have suggested and it's a problem all by itself.

And one of the most important things...

Have as much fun doing these 11 things. Many believe that acquiring tons of knowledge before getting started will help.

This can work against you in the long run.

When you are excited, that is when you should act and when the results start coming in.

Too much research and too much knowledge can work against us.

Einstein said it best "Imagination is more Powerful than Knowledge".

    Thanks for the post!

I sometimes also tend to have that problem.
Recently I realised that I was doing that, so I stopped all my projects to focus on just one (finish and auto-publish a book) and I made a commitment to finish that one and only project until I work on anything else.
So far I've sticked to my commitment and I've almost finished the work

Awesome thread @ValentinCavelier! You've more or less summed up exactly where most newcomers spend a lot of time -> i.e the road to failure!

I really do agree with your first statement

I would like to add a mistake.

    12) Never delagate and always work alone.
Exemple, when you start a blog, it's a good idea to delegate some tasks.
It is a fact, nobody's able to do every thing (design, SEO etc..). You can save time if you spend money (not a lot) to delegate some tasks.

You can also work with partner.

Do not work for your business, your business must work for you

      Very good one Cedric. Thanks

It is important to realize that you can't do everything by yourself and that sometimes it costs you more money to try than to outsource some tasks.

You've learned well. I would add "set goals" to your list. Write them down and review them often. Goals represent your "destination" ...if you don't have a destination, any direction will do, but it may not lead you to places you want to be.
