How do you motivate yourself in the morning?

Howdy, warriors.

I have a problem. In the end of most days I feel happy and excited. After I wake up though I am unmotivated. Starting my workday (I work from home) requires tremendous effort. The same effort is required to stay focused for the first hour of work.

Do you have/had the same problem? How do I cope with it?

Why don't you try exercising in the morning, maybe going to gym? It is proven that physical exercises improve focus and concentration as long as motivation.

    Hi Christian,

Exercising is awesome as noted above.

Also meditating helps balance you out so you embrace those negative or low energy moods and release them.

Sometimes I wake up in a state of mental hurry.

Working on my mental tools by embracing these thoughts helps me to release them and replace with positive, inspiring thoughts.

    Hope this helps!

      Hey Christian,

Both of the above recommendations are great. Working out will definitely get your blood flowing and body moving. Meditating also helps stabilize your thoughts and emotions.

My advice is get a solid ROUTINE. By having a routine, your body will become conditioned to follow it. If you just wake up everyday and kind of just do whatever until you finally wake up, then your body knows it can just slack off until IT feels like waking up.

Here is my routine, take from it what you like. Soon as I wake up, I pray. After a few minutes of that, I meditate and practice some deep breathing exercises. After 15 minutes of that, I take a nice hot shower followed by a cold shower. Then I prepare my morning smoothie.

If you can see, my body is conditioned with a solid routine and is getting everything it would need to wake up; stimulation- hot/cold shower, Glucose-Food,Mind Spirit balance-prayer/meditation. It really has no choice but to wake up at that point.

Hope that helps and let me know how it works out. Best of luck to ya bud!

I wake up in the morning and I give THANKS to this opportunity I have.

I am grateful for what I do have, and I take advantage of new opportunities to learn.

I know that I a lot to be appreciative of, and that I should never take one day for granted.

I remain positive and humble and with that mindset it pushes and motivates me to do great things.

When I want a little extra motivation I will read a motivational book, or watch a motivation video on YouTube. I also have a list of motivational quotes that I have written in a notebook.

All the suggestions above are awesome. However, what I would suggest is two things,
    1) Keep your eyes on the prize and set yourself daily targets
    2) Make a vision board and have your primary goal at the middle of it as center focus and every morning look at it and say out loud "by the end of today, I will be one step closer to getting ______"

The above works well for me and I hope it helps.

    Hi Christian

The problem with working from home and staying motivated is that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish relax time with work time. Make sure you have a designated area for work which is free from distractions, you'll be surprised how much this helps you to focus.

Another problem that I faced personally was that you often put a lot of pressure on yourself to work flat out. It's very easy to then become demotivated when you lose focus or become distracted. Try working in 45-60min blocks followed by a 5-10min break where you leave your work space and completely step away from whatever it is that you're doing.

    Hope this helps

I concur on what you've said here. Working from home can be a blessing and a curse. You really need to set time aside for yourself. I'm as guilty as anyone of not doing this and wondering why people aren't busy working all day like me. Having a routine in my opinion is very important.

About 2.5 years ago I was working 9-5 at a large company in Melbourne. I was never overly motivated and did okay in the business. I went to Fitness First about 3-4 nights a week.

A new guy to our team was going to the same gym (just across the road from the office) in the mornings, and had been trying to convince me to go with him since day dot. As Summer approached I saw the value in it - more time to do fun things of a night time!

I gave it a try, it took some time getting used to, but I haven't looked back since. The results were - I started doing really well, to the point of smashing records within the business. Realising my potential I then went on to start a business myself, and then another one, with documents for a new venture to be signed this week. I'm pretty content.

To this day I still think about the direct correlation to me starting my morning workouts and my increase in production, focus and drive, especially in the morning - it has to be real, right? I still work out every morning (muay thai and crossfit now), and if I don't work out in the morning I feel lousy and have a terrible day. There is a bunch of empirical evidence supporting the value of morning workouts, I never paid attention to that and still don't, I just know what works for me and pushing the limits in the morning definitely does.

      Give it a go!

Like the others said: meditation, exercise, routines. Place some sticky notes with motivating and inspiring quotes on the wall or on the desk where you can see them immediately when you wake up. Be thankful of what you've got. Have a clear plan or to-do list for each day.

You don't have to go to gym, exercising at home leaves more time for other fun. I use workout DVDs and free workouts from Fitness Blender. HIIT makes you sweat and gives an extra kick for the day. I do HIIT and strength training on alternate days. However, this is my personal preference, try to find the types of exercise which you like.

30 minutes of gratitude .. Just list everything you are grateful for every morning. You will be amazed how quickly you fill up 30 minutes

Some people call it prayer, others might call it meditation ... I call it my morning cup of Java

I'm with working out. It promotes proper blood circulation giving you more energy throughout the day. You don't have to be a "beast" in the gym like most gym rats would like you to. Jog, walk, swim are great forms of exercise.

It's very difficult to stay motivated if you work from home, but the best way to keep motivation in your life is to have a purpose and a plan of action everyday. When you get up in the morning, first you should give thanks for having an opportunity to live another day. Next do a few push ups or drink some coffee to jump start your mind. See the problem with the lack of motivation is that it's fueled by routine and a lack of vision. It's time for you to change your daily habits by doing something totally different. Change the way you work, change the way you eat, reexamine your short and long term goals, visit new hobbies in life and enjoy learning to live on purpose. When you're living on purpose and you have a plan of action then motivation to get up and start your day off the right way will become that much easier.

lighten your schedule in morning, do something fun, then ease into work. Too much pressure to hit the ground running in work can be overwhelming. Ramp up your work in your prime afternoon hours.

When I wake up in the morning, I look at the ceiling of my bedroom, and realize that I'm still paying a mortgage that would kill a buffalo. Then I think about the employees that need paid, no matter what I do. Then I think about the pile of work I have to get done before I take on another client. I think about the promises I made to have certain work done on time. I think about my reputation, if it isn't delivered.

And then I get to work.

Every morning I listen to a success audio, super essential to get my mind ready for the day.

    My fav 3
-- Strangest secret of the world
-- Science of getting rich (this is pretty long)
    -- The magic word

Also I use super cold air conditioning / shower / high energy music / dance to pump myself up on days when I feel like shit. I swear that combination works like a charm. 15-minute instant motivation if you will :-)
