Writing 1st Ebook. Need opinions!

Hey warriors!

I am in the beginning stages of writing my first ebook. So far my idea is to write a "How to guide" for people trying to go vegetarian or vegan. It might be titled something along the lines of "Surviving your first year as a vegetarian/vegan".

I would like to focus on the social aspect of adopting this lifestyle. I feel that is a major deciding factor for some people. So I just wanted to ask all of you what are some main reasons that you find holds you back from eating healthier? Lack of discipline? Lack of understanding? Afraid of it affecting your social life?

I appreciate the feedback. Just trying to get some market research. Thanks

My first thought is that your title should have the word Vegan or Vegetarian at the beginning of the title.

And the title needs a real benefit tied to being a vegan. Losing weight, living longer, better sex, less allergies, better thinking....whatever. Because "Surviving your first year" isn't compelling. It isn't positive. It makes being a vegan sound like work. And whether it really is work or not, is immaterial. It has to sound easy, and there has to be a big immediate reward.

But that's only if you want people to buy the book.

I'm not a vegan, so I can't help you with a story. But the headline and cover will determine how many sales you get. Then later, your actual content will get you interviews, consultations, followers, and the rest.

Over and beyond Claude's excellent advice on the marketing side, I would like you to re-think the basis of your book. I do have friends who are vegetarian as well vegans who haven't suffered a bit in being social. Both of those lifestyles are very popular and restaurants are now catering to them and have special menus for them right along with gluten free ones for those who are allergic to wheat.

I don't mean to discourage you in any way, but want to see you successful and that's why I'm suggesting you may want to reassess the angle for your book.

      Success to you!

A book that offers the pros and cons is good because it helps people make up their mind. They get to read all the info in one book instead of having to find lots of books on the same topic. Good luck!

For most of us, sticking to the plan is the major problem. So giving some motivation and advice on how they can maintain discipline for that year would be great.

          Hi!

My biggest issue would be being an outsider with those who are not eating/living this way.

Say, if I'd go to a restaurant and I wouldn't be able to order the same food as everyone else ... that would definitely make an outsider.

          Cheers,
          Timo

        • great idea and very interested in this angle.

years ago in San Francisco,Ca I was looking for a roommate situation, using Craigslist.

          Posting :

"were a vegan household and no meat in the fridge"

          Boy, was I pissed!

the audacity, and better than thou response I felt was strong.

when your start out, and publicly announce your preference like that, it just hit me the wrong way. but I could of been in the wrong.

maybe your book can reconcile this???

P.S - I am a exercise addict, working out 5x's/week and eat right going on 30+ years.

I don't like brocolli! but if you do, I will still respect your right and not push my dislikes on you, especially to solicit and demean.

Awesome you are doing your market research. Can I suggest you maybe find some forums/blogs/fb groups that maybe focus in this niche. You might be able to get a wealth of people who can give you some more ideas as well as potential take ups for your e-book.

Personally, the thing that holds me back, is the lack of time to prepare healthy food and my hate of cooking lol! I have many talents but unfortunately cooking isn't one of them.

    But I'm an awesome baker!

    Good Luck

Time. Because the amount of time it takes to make cheap, healthy food, that's a major barrier for me.

Regarding your niche specifically, it takes a lot of time to make healthy things from scratch that cost less. Premade veg*n items can be very expensive and very unhealthy.

I have seven years experience as a veg*n (though I am not anymore) so feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about anything. I dealt with a lot of things you'll be writing about!

First, don't let anything stop you from writing your first book -- no matter what you decide to write about.

Second, your feelings may or may not be a good barometer of what other people feel. If this is what you base the premise of your book on, make sure this is an issue before you write a book about it.

If your feelings aren't indicative of a genuine deciding factor then you won't make many sales no matter how good the book is.

Let me put it another way... if you write a book about training a pet fish to blow bubbles because you feel people want to do that but don't know how, you won't sell many books because few, if any, would be interested in it.

That's why we don't write books based on feelings, we research potential topics.

I became a vegetarian after I watched "fat sick and nearly dead", and I started juicing.

I felt so ill. I had a terrible time. I am convinced it was the chemicals in the meat I was eating so I stopped eating meat. However, I am an animal lover and both my sisters are vegetarian and I had tried to do the veggie thing before.

I have been vegetarian now for about six months and I wouldn't go back to meat eating again.

I think there has to be something in it for the person or they won't do it. You have to really prove to the reader that vegetarianism will benefit them in lots of ways.

    I hope that helps,

    Best wishes,

    Ruth

Sometimes I just don't realize I'm eating unhealthy. You know when you eat something unhealthy and then realize after you've eaten that you shouldn't have. That doesn't happen to me as much now but when I was younger it was a problem.

First, to be a vegan is not necessarily healthier than a meat-eater. It all depends on moderation.

Second, if you must be a vegan, don't flaunt it as if you will all go to Heaven.

Third, as a book it might sell depending on how well you write it. I tried to be a vegan once after having stayed in India for two months where there are a lot of vegans. After two weeks my weight dropped so low that I looked emaciated. But I felt alright. When my mom saw me, she cried thinking that I was very sick.

    So I stopped.
