Another reason to meditate?

I've only found good in meditating - nothing bad except for poor placement of legs resulting in strains (but you can obviously fix that).

Very interesting article. Meditation changes the chemistry in the mind, but some times the straining in the legs can be a turn off

Hi, you can do the meditation without crossed legs or lotus position. Simply sit in a chair with your palms on your thighs.

You can't do meditation while you're lying down because the wake-sleep mechanism will eventually drift you off to sleep. Your spine has to be upright to maintain mindfulness. Meditation is not hypnosis.

      Hi James,

1 - Awesome study! I too have only seen benefits from meditating...although sometimes I find the allowing of long repressed memories to be difficult to embrace, all good in the end.

2 - Lying on your side has been advised in meditation books that I read; so you can do lying meditation, just not on your back Because then it is sleepy time, lol!

      Good share!

Most people don't realize that they are already doing it. It's about letting go of resistance. If you're not comfortable doing it then you are resisting. Peace.
I do not really agree actually.

Meditation is fully letting go - but in the case of moving your physical body, you are still being attached to the 6 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, thought). What you might mean is "mindfulness" instead.

Meditation involves letting go of concepts and any kind of tangibility, allowing the "I" to observe the "Me". The "I" is the watcher, while the "Me" is the thinker/doer/feeler.

Of course, it is possible to reach a state of consciousness while moving. Many athletes describe it as the "Flow" state. A period of intense concentration, similar to samadhi or perhaps the first jhana.

This intense concentration cannot be achieved easily unless you constantly train "access concentration". In your case, I would assume it as "mindfulness" instead.

By avoiding any stimulation within the "Me", just like how the river clears itself of mud when it ceases moving, the mind shines when it ceases thought. Throughout this process, you would then experience mindfulness.

Thank you for the share. I meditate about 45-60 minutes a day, except Sundays. It is partially responsible for lowering my blood pressure.

Aside from the health benefits, it also helps me with perspective and keeping my focus on the present.

  • Thank you, James. This was a good useful post for me to absorb. I have always enjoyed the benefits of meditation even if it is not a practice. Watching the mind is a wonderful exercise in patience and curiosity. And, the stilling of the mind is like dark brilliance.
