How do you motivate a friend who just got laid off. In these times of uncertainty who knows "who" it will be "next".

Giving some alternative options might help. Encouragement goes a long way in this type of situation. Recommending useful books on personal development, attracting wealth, and changing of the mindset might be good as well. Ultimately, they have a choice of either dwelling on their situation or doing something to change it for the better.

Help them talk through their options. It's better to focus on the positive. I hate it when it happens. Happened to me at the worst possible time but, oh, revenge was soooo sweet.

Not knowing the vastly important details like who he is, what happened, why they got laid off, likely hood of getting work again, other mental states besides possibly lacking motivation – well, there is a lot. Generally I would invite them out to do things. Some sports would be good. Don’t talk about the layoff just yet. Let them know they are not a leper for losing their job. That they have good friends. After a bit, then you can offer some help or to talk about it.

When one door closes, another one opens. Always. There most likely is a 'better' opportunity for your friend. The previous company probably did them a favor. They might not see it this way right now but they will shortly.
