What Do You Do To Focus? Concentrate? Overcome Distractions?

To be highly productive and succeed in many industries, you require a lot of focus, and a lot of time spent doing what you should enjoy.
Sometimes however, spending a lot of time at something doesn't necessarily mean you are being the most productive you can be. I am sure we have all experienced times of distraction, while completely forgetting the task at hand. Or at least slowed down as a result of. Some people feel they are most effective under silence and without distraction. Lets face it, We cannot always avoid distractions, and it can be devastating to our productivity.

Lately, I have been working on ways to overcome distractions, and continue as productive as possible. Any additional advice would be awesome too!

Distractions relating to Noises

Traffic Passing By - People Arguing - Music Next Door - Dog Licking Itself

A dog licking and licking and licking,,, egh,, it drives me!!!! Not sure if it is the endless repetitive sound, or the gross thought of what the dog is doing, but it use to stop every thought I had going for me.

What Helped Me Overcome This Distraction?

Working under complete silence allowed me to read and write like a champ, but I couldn't have the dog go around with a piece of plastic around its head. SOO.

Relaxing melodies related to waves, wind, and nature MP3's rescued me. Soft instrumentals without voice also appear to have the same appeal for me.

Placing these melodies on low as I am writing not only helped faze out these sounds, but now I feel certain sounds do not bother me as much. Even at times without my music I am not bothered so much.

Over time with the adaptation of enjoyable sounds into times of concentration, we may exercise our brain to adapt with other distractions related to sounds.

Crystal Waters - Frank Borell
Dolphin Dreams - Dan Gibson
Waters of Life - Mystical Sun

Are three of which I have enjoyed the most while writing, and helped with my brain development.

Maybe this will help some other Warriors in being more productive. Please give us any more advice on things you do to be more productive. A topic I have not covered was Visual Distractions.

What can you do to overcome Visual Distractions?
What Other distractions do we face? How do we overcome them?

Thank you for reading, and thank you even more for any input you have

Well, I may be different than many others on here but for the past few years when I need full concentration I turn on the jams of KORN, Nonpoint, Chili Peppers, Godsmack and several others.

This usually does the trick when I am working on images or graphics, but if I need a bit more "brainpower" and less "artistry" then then I will put on something lighter which could be a ton of different artists from Chuck Mangione to J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concerto #3 - The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock or to something done by Vivaldi.

If it is a full blown session to limit distractions and achieve full concentration then I work at night to my favorite music.

Certainly no TV, and if exterior noise is a distraction then my music selection will be adequate to drown out the distracting noises. If I need to I go to the bullpen and grab the headphones I won't hesitate.

      Regards,

      -don

Meditating is a great way to learn to focus or organize your thoughts toward a certain direction or end goal.

I used to rely on music and similar external methods for noise and distraction management. But I think learning to do that internally at command is better and doesn't leave you dependant on something external.

I say the same thing to my clients who insist on listening to music during physical training to get that mental edge. Again, dependence on the external. Nothing inherently wrong with that but what happens when you don't have access to that music?

This is one of my major worries. That I may only be patching the issue instead of actually fixing it.

How would one meditate towards this achievement?
I am actually very new to meditation and it is really a form of relaxation for me at this time. I'm certainly no vivid wake dreamer nor do I experience outer body experiences but my curiosity towards improving my meditation is increasingly high.

Meditation has no method and any person or company telling you theirs works best should be viewed with caution.

Meditation is simply the redirection of thought to acheive a certain end. It is also an honest dialogue between your conscious and subconscious minds. That dialogue may be driven by traditional Buddhist monk chants, by silent mental imagery, by observing and embracing one's thoughts. The point is this dialogue should genuinely be important to you than your physical surroundings.

Ever seen a monk totally calm despite the noise of the world? That is an example of it.

Before anything, TELL yourself that you can overcome this obstacle. That's half the battle, so to speak.

People also use external methods like this when they fear failure. I wrote a special article just to address this most paralyzing of fears, which you can find on my advice blog. The link is in my profile.

Thanks, I believe this will be very helpful for me. Meditation is becoming important to me, and my understanding of it is only clear because of everyone here on Warrior Forum.

With all the different opinions and perceptions of everyone here, how I look at the world and my own opinions are changing. People I encounter face to face have noticed a lifted difference in myself. I've been told I have a glow and always with a smile. So the difference is certainly a positive one, and I thank everyone for that.

Do continue to provide your input for others to benefit as I did

    Hi Damien,

I like it. Work in silence. I meditate, and focus on goodness in life. Doing this makes me feel good, and my good feelings bring my focus to a laser point. All about an energy game, which is why music can rock too

    Thanks!

When I need to focus sometimes I do a little mantra in the back of my mind. All I do is repeat my goal over and over again. Usually this whips me into shape and gets me going

for me music is distraction. I cannot work and listen to music at same time. I'm either working or listening. What helps me (I don't know if it will work for others, but i guess it should do) is "ecology of mind" -- considering what to let into my mind and what not. For example news. movies, endless facebook discussions...
What does improve concentration is regular exercise, morning shower and yoga/joggin after that. If you are freshened up and filled with energy, you attention tends to last for longer.

Great post. Binaural beats defiantly work for me.

Using gamma waves and trypnaural meditations too

You use gamma waves for meditation? Damn dude lol Every time I've used gamma i lose focus and i get a sense of other worldliness and hyper awareness. I don't necessarily consider that a good thing when i need to concentrate, but hey if that works for you what can i say?

I like meditating in theta and deep delta myself. It helps to keep me centered. I've tried doing work on days where i didn't meditate in the morning and i felt erratic and unorganized, so meditation in the lower frequencies definitely helps me.

Yeah, I think maybe because my brain is naturally in the lower frequencies (not sure to be honest).. Gamma makes me have super focus.

I have more self control and I become more alert and happy.

I read a book called Gamma Healing and since then i have using the methods to bring me in to the gamma state and using binaural too of course.

It works for me as well as trypnaural alpha..

The lower waves make me feel groggy for some reason it's weird.

When I have family and friends over and they're blasting the television or radio in my living room, I lock myself in my room and put in my ear plugs and get to work.

As long as nobody comes barging into my room, I'm usually able to focus. Sometimes I might listen to some classical music on Pandora or if I'm doing something that doesn't require extreme focus, I will listen to some hip hop to keep me entertained through dull tasks.

  • Music helps me focus but not in the way that you expect.

Most people listen to music that they like or music that relaxes them to help them focus.

I listen to music that I don't like on my headphones. It forces me to drown out the music and the noise around me by focusing on the task at hand.

I know, it's weird. I tried listening to music that I actually like. But I found out it distracts me more because I'd rather sing and dance along to my favorite song than work.

And it has to be on my headphones. If I listen to music that I don't like on speakers it just annoys me and I don't get any work done.

Now that is a very interesting concept... Although I prefer music without any singing or words when I am doing work. Writing more to say,.

I can see this working for some people. It would depend on the work you are doing. This would be the same for any music you listen to. The work or activity you are doing makes a big difference to what would be appropriate to listen to. If I want energy and excitement I will be the first to throw on some house beats and techno. This would not go so well for when I am trying to write though.
