Let's Talk About Work Ethic!

First of All - Welcome Back! There may be a few new popular faces around now.


I believe most "Think" they have strong work ethic but it is the only perspective they have.
When able to compare work ethic to those who are very successful, I am sure many people would be surprised to realize that the efforts they put in are not what they had thought.

I take it seriously, but I know that many times I am not doing everything I can. That I know for sure.
Thinking about work ethic however do remind me to push that little bit harder during slower times.

I love this post Joe Crosbie! It reminds me of why I do the things I do.

I take my work seriously. I know the only gratification I can receive is when I truly know that I have done my job the right way.

work that produces results

a farmer in the us works really hard to grow food .. but most are close to 60 and working a second job to live and farm ..because they make so little money per acre .

are you working like a slave or a serf ..where most of what you produce is taken by the state or some form of rent .

my work ethic is simple .. if i am getting paid by the hour keep me busy . i do not like sitting around or sweeping floors .

at home i like to refine the daily stuff down to get them done as quick as possible .. i prefer to design and decorate for efficient use .

with diy stuff ..if i am doing it to sdave money ..i am running the numbers to make sure i am saving money .

i despise creating wasefull unproductive tasks to fill time and look busy .

Work ethic becomes second nature and afterthought when passion is part of the equation. Without a true passion for what you're doing, work ethic remains a close cousin of slave labour.

I constantly have work ethic on my mind. As an entrepreneur I think its important to be aware of your pace and make sure it aligns with your vision and your expectations. I also play little mind games with myself ... like if I'm thinking about getting up for a few minutes, I think do I really need to get up? is this me just wasting time? and it puts me back in focus.

In my mind though, I'm working 24/7 ... literally dreaming about work. It's the first thing that usually pops into my head in the morning and the last to leave.

Love it Joe! These days I'm big on fun ethic, meaning I slow down, work from a calm place, and take more time off to let The Universe handle the rest...less force, more POWER, and I'm digging my work more than ever. We gotta keep at it but if you know why you'll persist like crazy since you'll be having fun. Thanks!

When I've done a lot of hard work my life is more meaningful. I don't sleep a lot this days because there's a lot going on my mind and I think until the time I meet success face to face and just own it then I can sleep the whole day and maybe work again. Work, work, work, I love it!

This is an interesting topic. I faced a challenge today. I just picked up a new proofreading/editing client and we have agreed on a set price for specific jobs and bigger jobs need to be quoted on separately.

This job was twice as big so I quote him twice the price...which I believe is fair.
Anyway, he came back and said that was way too high and he would only pay $20 more than the other jobs.

After getting back up off the floor, I had to think hard about that one.
Being a new client, I like to do my best (well, I do for all clients but new ones need to know I do a good job).
I have already done 3 jobs for him and been paid.

So I decided that he had 2 choices. He could either pay what I asked OR
he could find somebody with a lesser work ethic who would be willing to "suck up" and accept whatever pay this guy offers.

He is a lawyer so I felt he was bullying me a bit.

His reply was that the initial higher quote was fine but that he expected high quality work. I replied that I work until he is satisfied so he can't lose.
I am glad I stuck to my guns.

I do have a strong work ethic but I don't believe the customer is ALWAYS right and will stick to my guns in some situations.

I also take work ethic seriously and it annoys me when I have to deal with people who have no work ethic or people who think that having work ethics means you have to work like a dog. Having work ethics means you respect the work that you do and you respect the people that are affected by your work (clients, bosses, employees). Work ethics means honoring your commitments and doing the best that you can each and every time. It means respecting the people around you and the work that they. Work ethics is something everyone should have whether you're pursuing your passion or your working on a job you hate. It's what separates professionals from jokers. Professionals do their best no matter what job or situation you put them in. Jokers are just full of excuses.

Cool topic my friend! I used to have a terrible work ethic but as I matured and really committed to my goals my work ethic sky rocketed

I am starting to notice a trend that I don't like. Is this how the world will transition into an even more cold and uncaring place? Under the guise of empowerment and motivation?

Listen, there are a lot of people with great work ethics who find themselves in undesirable situations. That is the way the world works. There cannot be a top if there is not a bottom.

And when dealing with topics like these- success should be prefaced with the word "financial" or "professional".

well as far as the top and bottom thought ..many times that is based on location .. in new york city you can have a 6 figure income and be in the bottom of many social orders ..

while in may parts of the world that are safe to live you can have an income near the Us poverty line and live a real good life .

are you working and getting a life you really want ..or are you working to have a life style people have said you should want .

I've always been a believer in hard work. When I was a child, I noticed that all the people around me who had the nice cars, houses, and lifestyle, had to work really hard to get it.

Once, I realized that, I began to work hard at everything I wanted to be successful with. Whether it be sports, video games, girls, or money, if you want something, you have to work to get it. Create your own luck.

But why does almost every personal development coach in the world tell us that? All the way up to Oprah and Tony Robbins? Something about passion and purpose being so important. Or some other version of personal fulfillment, happiness, or having fun?

Flattery puts butts in seats. If your target market is a large portion of the general market (I am glad mine is not) then flattery is one of the greatest ways to get people to start to listen to you. Pressing the pain button closes the sale.

Yep, especially if you see personal development as a branch off of psychology. Wow. It can be immensely confusing. I spent over twenty-five years sorting through the confusing terminology to find what people are actually saying. Did you say you wanted to meet on Tuesday or the day after Monday? And people would argue to the death that each is a different thing. That is just one of the problems.

So to me work ethic and purpose are similar enough in how you are using them that I can understand you. I get it. Is that not enough?

It does bring to mind the desire people have to more and more enjoy life, enjoy work, and be fulfilled. Work seems a lot easier these days than I have heard it was a hundred years ago. Even fifty years ago. People can refer to the ‘50s that it was the good ol’ days but diversity in jobs seemed much smaller then. Back then if your boss kept reaming you out you probably just took it. Today? If your boss even looks at you sideways (and you have an actual skill set) you are gone in a second. It is easier than ever to get a new position when you are valued.

Only after you have a valuable skill set can you comfortably pursue passion and fulfillment. Learning to enjoy work was one of my greatest achievements. The instant gratification now comes more and more from simply being in the present moment and enjoying that first. Then my candy bar tastes soooo much better. Most people have to work to find and enjoy their purpose. It is not always naturally there.

Work smart.

I think the reason many people recommend/suggest finding your passion and purpose is because it's such a great motivator. (And such a great feeling when you're working on your purpose.)

I have nothing against making money, in fact, I think it's marvellous, however it doesn't compare to doing something that's more important than yourself: Something that you were born to do. : )
