What's Holding You Back?

Hi Guys!

I want to know what is holding you back in business and creating the wealth you want? Why are you not successful yet?

Is it because you fear failure? Are you a serial procrastinator? Do you fear success? Do you battle to focus? (like me) Do you fail to finish things? Running after shiny things?

What are the biggest things holding you back from getting where you want to be? Not talking about "not enough money" but mentally. What is it that is holding you back?

They say the first step to 'recovery' is admitting you have a 'problem'. So maybe if we start a thread on admitting on what is holding us back we can start chasing the ghosts away?

So, what is holding you back? Be honest!

Finding people who are on the same page as me, in other words who can keep up with me in terms of work intensity, quality, and output. But that's just the nature of the beast. If you want to build a top notch rock solid master-mind group, you have to be absolutely unforgiving when it comes to standards.

The minute you settle for someone just because, things go downhill.

    WHO always comes before WHAT.

There is a saying of some sorts that you roughly earn the same as what your 10 closest friends do. So it pays to associate with people who has the same outlook as you.

And the wrong team of people can definitely hold you back yes! Not easy getting the right staff / outsourcers that can follow your vision.

Good point. You become what you surrounded yourself with, be it people or thoughts or activities.

I have found the only effective way to deal with this issue is to create a culture based around certain values and principles. Once you strengthen this culture into something greater than yourself, the right people (who also resonate with those values) will gravitate toward you and this culture. These are usually the people you want.

One more I forgot to mention....and this is the main one......desperation.
I am on edge most of the time trying to crack this IM thing and funds are drying up.
Desperation sets in and blocks off my relaxed and creative side which makes it harder for me to work efficiently.

Well, desperation can be a GOOD thing. It was out of desperation that my whole IM career started. Applied for over 40 jobs (in 2002 I think) and in desperation turned to the Net. Worked MANY nights until the sun came up. Took me a month just to decide WHAT I am going to do online. My very first website never made any money. But I did not sit around and wait for it. I went on and built many more.

Desperation can be the rocket fuel that you need to get things done, but if not focused, it can overwhelm. Just like "passion" can be a motivator (rocket fuel) that drives your creativity, I recon desperation can be too, if focused and not allowed to overwhelm you.

Fear of failure for me. It's like I can't make any mistakes because there are people that I'm accountable for. And by committing mistakes, I might end up messing things up for them.

yes, you can in fact "fail your way to success" if you learn from each failure and correct course along the way. What I have learned probably most from my failures is what I DO NOT WANT TO DO. For one thing, I do not want staff. Had them in my brick and mortar business and in my online business. Too much hassle for me. So if I look at opportunities now, I ask myself "does it require having staff" then I do not go for it. If software cannot do it, I outsource and get it done.

Another lesson learned is that I do not take on large client websites. Do not like to work on large client websites for ever. Used to take them on in the beginning and "failed" at them because I learned that my personality type likes shorter and quicker projects that I can focus on and get done. Now I say NO to large projects.

By eliminating the things in my life that I do NOT want to do I have limited myself to the things I WANT to do.

So as long as you learn from your failures, they can in fact be very valuable lessons, but you MUST take it forward and use it to correct the path you follow in order for failures to become success.

It would have to be not being patient enough for me and realizing that things often take longer than I'd like for them to take off. It is so easy to give up when you aren't getting immediate amazing results.

I am aware of it now though and am focused on the long game. Thanks for this post as it is always good to have a reminder of what holds us back.

yeah! admitting and facing what our "issues" are is the first step to recovery I recon. Only when you are honest with yourself can you start correcting course.

I realised lately that I have too much of a "I am planning to do this" and not enough "I am DOING this" attitude and that needs to change.

However patience is a good thing to have yes, as long as you are not patient in the sense of "waiting for things to happen" in stead of "making things happen"

yes, these can get you BADLY! I believe by learning to focus and getting it under your belt, a lot of the others can be overcome. if you can focus better, you can get more things done better, see more results and hence increase your belief and diminish your fear of failure. That fear of failure is a bad one!

there is of course the other one, fear of success!

The thing that used to hold me back was the amount of time it took to see any results. In the last few years, I would create a website, and then write some content for it. After about 2 weeks I would get tired of it because I didn't really see any traffic or sales. My main problem was committing to the website. I probably made like 6 or 7 websites which all ended the same. Several months ago, the procedure started again, the same old routine. This time around, I wrote once a day for 2-3 weeks, but after that I started to get lazy again because I saw no results. However, I still motivated myself enough to write at least a couple times a week. After a month or two, I finally actually started seeing results and those results were what brought me to today. So basically for me, not seeing results fast makes these really hard to continue on.

"A body in motion tends to remain in motion unless acted by a force with equal or greater force".
    - that's the abstract law of motivation (actually it is Newton's third law but you get my point).

Success has many types of measurements. Money? Friends? Family?
Business? (many people in business are not wealthy, but are happy).
This post has to do with money. So onward we go.

It took me a long time to learn that perfection is unattainable,
organization is essential, and that focus is imperative.

Honing our strong points, and learning what our shortcomings
are so that we can improve them, are only part of what brings
success (in any area of endeavor).

In business, such as internet marketing (gosh, where have I
heard that term before), it is not enough to just go through
the motions of doing what everyone else is doing. So you
put up a blog, write articles, and so on. So are tens of
    thousands of other people.

What most of the tens of thousands of others do not have
are the patience to wait for success to come, the work ethic
to maintain quality standards, and the desire to help others
solve problems instead of wanting "Instant Riches" at any cost.

Success has its guidelines (of which there are many). I used to
think of them as rules, but so many rules get successfully broken.

rbates, well said! one of the things that stand out for me here again is focus. if you focus on the task at hand, ignoring distractions and just FOCUS on the current step in your plan (I hope you have a plan) and getting it done with dogged determination then a number of all the other things will fall into place.

"and the desire to help others solve problems" is the key, help others to get what they want, and you will get what you want! (zig ziglar)

Self doubt and fear of failure. This is what has held me back. But, when I learned to live mindfully, my life changed! I suggest anyone who hasn't already, look into this!
