Dream big and dare to fail

Norman Vaughan once said Dream big and dare to fail. Having small dreams and being afraid to fail is the antithesis of this advice, and it's something many of us do, even though we may not want to admit it.

The two go hand in hand, if you are too afraid of failing you'll keep your dreams on a leash. But if you overcome that fear, and jump out there fully willing to completely fail, you free your mind to dream up new adventures and goals for your life.

Failure comes with trying, and a life of not trying will not leave you satisfied, so it's good to continually put yourself out there. And when it comes to failing, our egos are our own worst enemies.

As soon as things start going wrong, our defense mechanisms kick in, tempting us to do what we can to save face. Yet, these very normal reactions -- denial, chasing your losses, etc -- that wreak havoc on our ability to adapt.

I have learned a couple of things along the way. Firstly I must always try new things. I like to expose myself to lots of different ideas and love to try lots of different approaches, on the grounds that failure is common.

I also ask myself can I survive this failure? So I look for experimental approaches where there's lots to learn like projects with small downsides but bigger upsides.

I feel that too often we take on projects where the cost of failure is prohibitive, and we just hope for the best.

Then this part is easier said than done and that is to know when you've failed. We've been trained that persistence pays off so to me it almost feels wrong to cut my losses and label an idea a failure.

I feel that if one is truly self aware and listening closely after acting on one's idea, you can't go wrong.

I have now learned that being able to recognize a failure just means that you'll be able to re-cast it into something more likely to succeed.

And we're so used to feedback but we rarely give feedback to ourselves and only do that for others. It is essential for determining where we have succeeded and where we have failed. We should also get advice, not just from one person, but from several. We're so used to feedback and comments whether we are bloggers or release WSOs.

Remember that if the feedback is harsh, be objective, "take the venom out," and dig out the real advice.

Yes, you seem to be talking my language! A lot of what I do is testing and stretching the boundaries of the box, being a little crazy, having a little fun with life and also with my work and also with my interactions with others. That is how I truly get passionate about what I do! I am tired of the same-o same-o, cookie cutter, mechanistic human existence. Most people are too serious and mechanistic for my liking. If one wants to succeed big or even if one wants to live more fully, one must not be afraid of failure.

Yes, I agree with this also! Follow your highest excitement in each moment! Do what you are most excited about! Use those as stepping stones to come closer and get clearer about what you really want! You are really doing that Odahh, and that is great!

When trying new things, and fearing to fail, I have applied Dale Carnegie's question : What is the WORST that can happen?

    Will I die?
Will my arm / leg fall off?
    Will I go blind?
Will someone I love or care for come to harm?

If the answer is NO to any / all of these questions, then what are you afraid of? So what if you fail? At least you tried! And if you do not try then you are not in the game of life.

      origin,

That is right along the lines of my thinking...

I ask, "What is the WORST thing that could realistically happen?"

      Whatever the answer is.....

I then accept that could happen..... and become "comfortable with it."

Of course, I'm assuming the WORST that could happen DOESN'T include anything serious... :-)

You can never succeed if you never dared to do things. You never know what success is if you never experience failure. Never be afraid to try new things because you can never tell if this might actually work out.

That's why we learn from our mistakes, right? We have to dare and do things even if we're not sure if it will fail or not because without these failures, we won't learn.

They key to success, I think, is to realize that failure does not exist. Every "failure" is simply a lesson or a guidepost that eventually leads to success.

Failure exists only if you stop before you succeed.

tongue in cheek the real key to success is a long process of sucking less ..what was the winning percentage of the team who won the world series last year .. how many game did the quarter back who won the Superbowl play real bad in .
the difference between people who maintain success over a life time is they find ways to improve themselves .

then you get the people who made a lot of money in a short time on bubble economics ..and for a time they get to write books on how to win.. then the bubble burts their money goes away..and so do they .

lifetime success is built off a life of continually sucking at things less .

        Apologies, good sir.

The real key is, as you say, yours. We'll keep mine as the backup (since we both said the same thing, without one of us realizing it).

i was having a little fun .. there are many keys to success anyhow as the bigger the thing the more little things involved ..

          it depends on the endeavor..

if you are building a building or operating a plane ..you don't want even the smallest thing to fail ..same with surgery .

i personally operated millions of dollars of equipment ..when i was in food processing ..and hated when mistakes where made or things went wrong .

but in building your life and building a business..you avoid mistakes that stop you from playing (well once you get above 25 as a male you tend to stop taking those risks .

in building a life worth living ..in dreaming dreams worth dreaming ..the greatest failure is to do things where you think you can't fail .

the other way..which i spent much of my life ..is not to try or do anything nr=ew ..because there was already and expectation of complete failure ..this is a bigger problem than the overly safe ..and people will voice this without realizing it .

i am currently doing it with what the universe is pushing me to do..the what n=me do that but there are so mant reason here they are that i can't do that .

It's good to dream only such Big that can be realised. If we just dream conspiciously, we are much likely to fail. First, you get to know resources, then dream , then try to complete it to succeed

In my experience there's no "failure"/adversity/etc. that can (ultimately) hold you back from accomplishing what's important to you.

And trust me, I've seen the worst of it. I love Susan Jeffers' "mantra:"

    "Whatever happens, I'll handle it."
    And you will.

I might just stop posting ,

the universe is again pulling the rug out from under me and crushing any hope it let me develop .
these dream is turning out to be just one set of problems after another..it was fun for the first week then it all began falling apart ..by the looks of it my money will run out in a couple month ..and i will be back in the states poor and homless .

i don't have reliable internet accsess most of the day..and it is over a month before i can get dsl .

the ex the women i came here to be with .. ignored everything i said i wanted ..and rented the first place she walked into because the walls where her favorite color ..so i am no where near a beach. no yard at all, no dsl.. and i am pissing through money because i have to go out for entertainment .

i can only maintain positive focus and mental attitude for so long .. but with no real support from the universe or the law off attraction.. how am i supposed to step forward when the only thing past experience has shown is it will collapse .

my dreams are smallish right now because i have been crawling through personal hell for the last ten years at least probably closer to 15 years ..

its been crawl get up walk a bit then get knocked back down and start crawling again ..no help no support .. about f6 years ago i ended up staying down for two years before i got back to crawling ,

i don't think i have gotten knocked down yet this time .. but i have no place to vent right now .

unlike any other time in my past i know what i want ..not what i was told to want..or marketed to to want or want because some rich famous person has .. What I want ..and why i want it ..

there is just frustration because there is just small amounts of income between the dream and converting it to a personal reality ..

you can't ever go back..you either stay in place or move forward at some pace ..crawl walk run .

anyway ..sorry to vent .. i think everyone here has gone through time where thing where not working out .

A perfect example of when quitting is appropriate and healthy. I don't understand people who say "never quit" - that is the worst advice anyone could give anyone and it is of course a load of cliche driven garbage. Quitting is efficient, fantastic and healthy and it's the fastest way to get to where you're (really) going. You should do it as often as you feel it's appropriate - like now for example. If the situation is as bad as you say it is then --> Get the hell out of there! You went down the wrong road, she's gone down a completely different road and seemingly without care or thought to your situation or life desires.

Just like when you're trying to find your way to a destination you've never been before and find yourself going down the wrong road YOU MUST QUIT traveling down the wrong road in order to get back on the right road.

Perhaps the reason too many people never reach their destinations is that they stubbornly and ignorantly refuse to quit (doing the wrong thing) and start doing the right thing.

Quitting can obviously be very healthy if you quit the right thing.

I wasn't going to reply to this because I know that when people vent, they're looking simply to express themselves or to seek attention, not to be patronized.

I won't touch sentences such as "and i am pissing through money because i have to go out for entertainment" because I think if you re-read that a few times you'll realize on your own how stupid it is to waste money while you're struggling to make it.

I do think, however, that the following needs to be said: please, for your own sake, man the f*ck up, brother. LIVE FOR YOURSELF, not for some woman or country or law. Live the dream you had for YOURSELF. Make that a reality. Don't complain. Improve your reality so you won't have as many complaints.

Or give up. It's your call.

The way I see it, there is no such thing as Failure in life...there are just results... you try something and it seems to not go right (fail), then give it another try from a different approach. Continue this until you find the right result for you....don't give up just because you think you failed or someone else told you, you can't do it.
