If you want to improve your IM start exercising. (it worked for me)
  • Start by doing xx pushups before you start your computer.
  • Set the timer for 20 min and do another xx.
Start out slowly but you'll be amazed by 2 things.
  1. How quick that timer rings.
  2. How energized you'll feel.
Remember it doesn't take that much time. It takes discipline.
If fact I used to have my Blackberry programmed to remind/motivate me.

Here is my schedule: These numbers didn't happen overnight. I built myself up to it.
  • Monday: 200 pushups (10 sets of 20 pushups)
  • Tuesday: 100 chinups (10 sets of 10 chinups)
  • Wednesday: rest
  • Thursday: 200 pushups (10 sets of 20 pushups)
  • Friday: 100 chinups (10 sets of 10 chinups)
  • Satureday: rest
  • Sunday: rest
Remember it doesn't have to be pushups or chinups. Just something that will cause your heart rate to increase which will supply your brain with more "energy" to make money online....

    that's a very good plan. I find push ups pretty hard to do, especially if you do them the correct way, all the way down and up. When i'm on the comp I do get pretty lazy.. so i do need to generate some energy somehow to push myself to do these type of exercise. The 20 minute intervals might work for me i'll try that tonight.

    Nice idea. I do exercises regularly but i don't do pushups. I just try to do some other exercises to keep myself fit and to maintain my body texture. I walk 30-45 minutes daily as well and that is the most important thing to do specially before dinner or early in the morning on a clean grass
    I am a full time internet worker so i spend more thn 12+ hours on pc so that is the main problem with me because i am now getting a fat belly so just trying to control it before its too late

  • Great question. I exercise daily. It definitely helps me out. You have a great system. I have to do in the morning and sometimes in the evening (before I am consumed w/ the business day). I do stretch while working on the net (relieves some stress).

    Interesting! I do 200 pushups per day. 100 in the morning when I wake up, and 100 before I sleep.

      Do you do it all at once? That is very hard. I used do to that but not anymore....
      Ever tried doing this? I have 2 litte girls ages 5 and 3. I like to do 10 pushups with them on my back. I figure if I do this every day till they turn 18 years old I should be pretty tough.... Of course, my wife says it won't be long till they think that it's not fun anymore.

      Keep it up! Exercising physically and mentally will avoid a lot of headaches later in life.

        haha... that sounds good runfast. You'll be pretty strong and tough by the time they turn 18.

        I do 100 pushups at once with my hands apart in the morning (works chest and shoulders secondary), and I do 100 pushups with both thumbs touching each other at night (work chest and biceps).

        Sometimes, I use two 3kg dumbells... a bit harder but you get maximum results.

    Keeping fit and active is VERY important to your productivity.

    People may not see it, but without your body optimized, everything that you try to do with it will be sluggished. Spending an hour or 2 a day exercising may seem like "wasted time" but it may lead up to 10+ hours of more productivity then without the benefits that come from a healthy body.

    Also remember, you are what you eat, it's important to fuel your body with good healthy foods instead of sugary processed garbage.

  • It's a good idea to get out of your chair and do something every 15-30 minutes to prevent back pain, whether it be stretching, push-ups, chin-ups, walking, dancing etc.

      I do not own a car. I walk to everywhere I go and use Public Transport to everywhere distant. All kinds of public transport, bus, boat, rail and air.

      I walk a lot. I used to run long distances but my frail health does not allow me to do it at the moment. I used to sail and even race boats but I don't go out sailing/racing with the sailing club at the moment for the same reason.

      No TV in my place. Only one computer and books so no danger of becoming a couch potato.

      I am a full vegetarian. No fast foods or anything GM. I buy from open air markets and from small production only. I avoid industrial and large chain supermarkets. Never smoked. I avoid prescription and other drugs.

      I can't always buy organic food as it costs too much in my part of the world.

        This will involve eating the right foods, and exercising three times a week.

        Now that I work full time from home, I will actually have the time to exercise, which will be lovely!

        I don't have a TV or radio either...I even live in America. I too don't smoke or drink.
        As for vegetarian...sorry I loved to eat my home cooked meals with loads of meat. I only eat out to give my wife a break from cooking all the time.

    I picked up the Ultimate New York Body Plan by David Kirsch and
    he details the fastest way to lose weight and it's pretty intense.

    It's using weights, a stability ball and medicine ball...cardio strength
    training for 45 min and then a cardio workout for 45min.

    You've got to set aside 1 1/2 hours to see results and work out every
    day. I start tomorrow! If nothing else I'll simply feel better!

    Remember Commitment comes before Equipment. Don't buy books, weights, and etc. till you are committed to follow through. Setup a checklist/chart by your computer and follow it. Keep it simple and start slowly. If you follow through then go out and buy that book.
    My wife bought me the Perfect Pushup after over a year of watching me do pushup using dumb bells as handles. It meant a lot to me because I was committed to doing it and she got something to keep me inspired to keep going.

    Good Luck to those that are starting out...exercise is a good habit to have but one of the hardest ones to maintain.

      I love that phrase! It's true, you don't need a ton of equipment to get your heart pumping. Running, jump rope, pushups and situps is how a lot of boxers train. Well, and hitting the bag too!

      This is a great post to remind us all to get up from our computers and keep physically fit. It also comes at a great time of year when it's dark and cold and sometimes easier to hibernate and eat holiday cookies!

    About 8 months ago I started a program where I do weight training 3 times per week and cardio 3 times per week. I do extra ab work on the weight training day in the evenings. My workouts are first thing in the morning.

    I'm more productive and have more energy. I highly recommend exercise to everyone!

    I just went 3 miles on the Treadmill, just so I could come upstairs and answer "Yes".

    Today has been a rough day and I really needed the stress release and emotional boost that I always get for running. So a big THANK YOU from me to you for this thread that sent me lacing up my shoes.

    Thats a good thread started,i run for 3 kms every day and do three sets of push ups by keeping my hands apart.first one 22 repeats,second one again 22 repeats and last one 15 repeats.

    Will some body guide me on what should be ideal interval between two sets and what are the exact benefits of push ups?If some body could throw some light on different types of push ups and how they benefit us would be great!

      I will surely mention an Exercise Ball. It cost roughly $10 to own and you can do so many exercises for different parts of your body using only one $10 or less ball.

      I usually visit YouTube to find new videos. Many people are coming out with new ways of using an exercise ball. That thing is useful.

      So go ahead guys, If you don't have your ball, buy it. It is easy to use and works wonders

      Pushups:
      Hands placed wide apart builds the chest
      Hands placed close together builds triceps
      I place my hands just outside my shoulders
      Others have said that I have perfect six pack abs... Guess what? I never do situps. I can only guess that I got this by doing chin-ups and pushup alone. So I think that doing pushups/chinup exercises your whole upper body. As for your legs...run...runfast...

          2. Thumbs and index fingers should be touching for triceps
          3. As for interval it depends what you're looking for...go 20 min intervals to stay in shape and 5 minutes for building muscle.

          Most of the time when I do pushups my hands are 22" apart

          The six pack abs probably come from doing chinups with weights strapped strapped to my ankles. (I only weigh 140lbs so I have to add weights to make it count ;-)

            That's inaccurate information man... the width of your hands is completely variable based on the size of the person. If the guy is 6'5 and has a 46" chest, he will be buckling and targeting the wrong muscle groups that he thinks he is working.

            A general rule of thumb is the wider your hands, the more you're working your chest. The closer your hands are together, the more you are working your arms (to stabilize your body).

              Thanks Alex for correcting me...I should of mentioned that I'm a 31 yr old Filipino that is 5' 8" and tip the scales at 140 lbs. (Need more specs? blood pressure 120/85 - bodyfat less then 9%. You can see I'm not a hard-core bodybuilder...)

              Thanks for your input on chinups.
              As for chinups I did the narrow grip hands facing towards you. When I lift I touch my knees with my elbows at the same time.

              The internet marketing route can be a very lonely route and so you have to exercise to maintain full focus.
              For me a mixture of jogging one day and then full out sprint intervals have worked wonders. I find when i stop exercising that my general energy levels are lower and i am easily distracted. May not be the case for everybody but is definitely the case for moi.

              I'm an old warrior who, until three months ago, was content to rest on my shield rather than to wield it. I was truly one of those guys who, whenever I felt like exercising, would go lie down until the feeling passed away. Then I got a job as a supervisor in the Census which demanded 12 -14 hours days, and 10 hour stretches of stand up teaching. My 72 year old body paid me back for the 10 years of sloth that had followed my retirement - but only for a day or two. Then something kicked in, I lost weight as rapidly as I gained energy, and I got to feeling really good.

              Now I'm done with Census (Did you send your questionnaire back?), but the urge to burn energy is still there. I'm doing the 3 mile "Walk away the pounds" and building up to 2 10 pound weights to lug for the 45 minutes each day. (Full disclosure : I'm only at 5 pounds now). So put me in the "learned my lesson" class of Warrior.

                There are some really great suggestions.

                I've lost nearly 28lb since I started doing this and kept it off for nearly 3 years. Here are mine:

                I run about 5k twice a week. Especially now as the weather it the UK is lovely at the moment. It really helps to focus and concentrate as I spend so much time sitting down at my computer, plus the I love the rush i get when I've finsihed and I need to cool down.

                I have dance lessons and have done that for about a 2 years. I also do pilates to counter (with resistance tools) balance all the cardio. It leaves more focused, calm and toned.

                I took up Krav Maga about a year ago. It's wonderful cardio (and self defence system) and it burns about 500 cals per hour. It's amazing because it great for confidence and a wonderful stress reliever as you get punch, kick, learn to elbow. I generally leave my class laughing my head off and totally relaxed. I would recommend it to everyone to try just once - especially women.

              I find exercise is truly the only way to escape the thoguhts of the day - personally i chose Muay Thai - there's nothing that focuses and clears the mind than the threat of being knocked down by a left hook or a kick to the neck

              3 days a week Muay Thai training , 3 days a week running 5k +

              Keeps the cobwebs out.

              I do feel very alert afterwards and find i can do some great focussed work afterwords.

              Yup, it keeps the creative juices flowing. I do push-ups in the morning. When I have a brain freeze, I take a break and play around with the kettlebells. At night, I try to do a complete workout. Sitting in front of the computer all day drains my energy. Exercise brings it all back and ramps up my productivity.

              Plus, I gotta keep my girlish figure.

            I do not think i will have to attach weights to my ankle since my weight is enough ,LOL!,but that pushups for triceps is still not clear to me,but then i am not renowned for having a sharp mind and a nice grasping power LOL!.

            Thanks for the plan. I've been doing pushups/situps every Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Total number of reps for each is 30.

            I will re-work the plan and do more set and add chin-ups to the routine.

              I'm a fan of intense but short exercise...

              I spend about 15 minutes of sprinting once a week, twice a week on the dumbells and chinups/pullups for about 15 minutes each time, the rest is just walking and playing a bit of social basketball.

              Diet is the most important I feel...the less processed foods the better.

          actually only takes me an hour to all this along

          with proper nutrition, I which enables me to get

          Lack of exercise is one of the worst things about being on the computer 12 hours a day! You have to take the time to make it a priority or otherwise it will just keep getting pushed out of the way for other more 'important' tasks.

          We do P90X and swear by it. It's the most kick butt exercise program I've ever tried - DH too. He can't stand exercise videos but these are different. Oh and from a marketing standpoint? If you did a blog on P90X it would probably be a huge hit. It's one of the hottest things in exercising today because people see results. It's not for the weak though - definitely don't try it unless you want to really push yourself. It's one of those, I hate it... but I love it!

      Exercises is very important when you work from home on the computer for a great part of the day. I run a hour 5-7 times per week just to keep my blood pumping right. When you are stagnate for most of the day it is even more important that you exercise. 20 minutes minimum per day will do a lot for you physically.

      I get what you are saying but I am not sure I fully agree. When I decided to get into shape (still a ways to go LOL) I knew I needed forcing functions to help keep me committed. I went out and signed up for a year membership at a local gym. Knowing $50/month was coming out of my bank account helps me make sure I use it.

      Now that might not be sound advice for everyone but it helped me.

      I now work out pretty much daily - I am on a 4 day split:

      Day One: Back and Bi's
      Day Two: Chest and Tri's
      Day Three: Thighs and Hamstrings
      Day Four: Shoulders, Abs and Calves

      Great post because in the chess for $$ sometime we forget the other side of life that drives everything - our health, spirituality, diet, emotions and relationships.

      I exercise regularly but wasn't as structured. It's a great idea I will take up. On the list, I would add stretching which is critical as you do strength training and the like. By the way, chin ups are great for an internet marketer since your back gets strengthened. That's critical when you are sitting on the computer for a long time.

      I usually run for around 1 mile. I have noticed that taking a walk first to warm up my muscles for around 10 minutes is very useful. I run. And then cool down by taking a walk for around 5 to 10 minutes. Finally some stretching exercises.

    I do something similar to this. Everytime I start-up my computer or do anything where I'm left waiting for a couple of minutes I do -

    20 squats
    20 sits ups
    20 push ups

    It's good to get some exercise in to let off some steam and improve focus.

    I workout regularly and have many friends involved in sports conditioning. I'm a three year subscriber to Men's Health. Here is some advice to people interested in getting fit:

    1. It's 70% Diet, 30% Exercise. The two are perpetual and rely on eachother to achieve ANY goals, whether that be muscle gain or fat loss.

    2. Drink plenty of water. This is fundamental in staying healthy. TIP: An ice-cold glass of water in the morning will kick-start your metabolism. Your body has to work harder to warm it up and regulate your body temperature.

    3. Optimum food portions should be a mix of protein, carbs and fiber - a fist-size of each is about right.

    4. You should aim for at least three colors on your plate for every meal.

    5. Diet Coke contains Aspartame, regular Coke is the only 'Coca-Cola' beverage that does not. Don't be another one fooled by "diet". Your children are at huge risk if they are consuming aspartame all the time. Google it, and then read it again.

    6. Eat SMALLER portions, more REGULARLY. Aim for 5-6 small meals a day. Why? You want to keep your metabolism burning. Picture a log fire. Throw all of the wood (food) in at once and it will burn slow, eventually dying out. Throw smaller bits of wood (food) in at regular intervals and that fire (your metabolism) will keep on burning the fuel (fat).

    7. Skipping meals is a no-go. You don't 'save' on calories, rather your brain signals to your body that you are not receiving food. The next step? Fat storage AKA survival mode.

    8. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) is your best friend for keeping a strong mentality, a fit physique and a healthy heart. Try finding a football field - Stand at the goal line, sprint to the half-way line. Jog back to where you started from. Sprint to the opposite goal line (or give it your best shot). Jog back to the start. Repeat.

    9. Green Tea and Coffee give your metabolism a temporary boost. As does chili.

    10. Replace White, starchy carbs (white bread, white rice, white pasta) with wholewheat, or 'brown' alternatives. Less sugar, longer-lasting slower-releasing energy. Makes you feel fuller for longer.

    11. Know your fats. Stay away from saturated fats and trans-fats. Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats are good for you in moderation. Fatty acids are essential for effective fat-burning.

    12. When muscle-building, eat a maximum of your bodyweight in grams of protein. Anything over this amount is wasted. E.g. 90kg guy, 90g protein.

    Remember it doesn't have to be pushups or chinups. Just something that will cause your heart rate to increase which will supply your brain with more "energy" to make money online....

      A great workout always warms up my brain and gets my creative juices flowing. I get a lot of ideas while on the treadmill.

      to add to this, DRINK WATER!! If you can get into the habit of properly hydrating yourself, you can really get better results. You'll have more energy, better health and metabolism.

      I regularly drink about a gallon of water a day. Studies have shown your brain works far better when it stays in a nice bath of water. One of the things I do to keep myself on task is, everytime I look at my water bottle, I take a drink. No matter what. Soon it becomes habit!

        I do some stuff regularly, but not at the comptuer.
        I do BJJ twice a week, wrestling 1 a week, boxing twice a week, gym 3 times a week, try go swimming 1 mile at least once a week. sometimse some intervals. yet it's not while I'm at the computer - I go for regular workouts and training sessions.
        this is something I always wanted to do, but never could afford due to working hours. now it's all pretty flexible, so it's like a dream come true.

    I'm an old fart.
    So, that means I've seen a lot of stuff (Fads) come and go.
    Common fact is, you need to 1) move enough to challenge your heart.2) do it regularly
    Pretty simple plan.
    Covert Bailey, odd name but, a knowledgable guy as far as exercise and fat loss is concerned.i

    Main take-away from his info is,regular exercise which has 1)steady work and 2) sprints will get you fit and burn fat off. Sprint could mean run faster for a bit then jog or it could be do 15-20 fast reps with a kettlebell, really not that important.

    Also, your goals determine you type of exercise.
    If it is fat burning you exercise in a certain heart rate zone.
    If you wish endurance for sport it is a different zone.

    To burn fat the most effective zone is 60-70% of your "Maximum" heart rate.
    That is determined by subtracting your age from the number 220.
    Actually there are more complicated methods that are more accurate than that but,
    it is close enough.

    I used to sell exercise equipment. I was a bit unique in that I really wanted my customers to succeed. Because of that drive, I would research how I could help them achieve their weight loss "with out fail".

    Utimately, tracking ones heart rate with an accurate monitor will ensure you get your goal, "IF" you actually use it, and actually do the work.

    I also was able to help motivate obese people using skills I developed with NLP training.

    In the entire country of hundreds of locations selling the same exact equipment, I had a return rate that was insanely negligible and earned bonuses that were in the top ranks.

    There were better sales people that sold more but, the had far more bounce backs than I.

    We only have one life to life unless someone is hiding something from us so, get off your butt, toss out or at least turn off the boob tube.
    Of all the countless hours of TV watching how much ultimately give your more benefit than mindless sedation?!

    Enough, reading about losing weight. Get up, get out and get going!
    Shame on you if you have children that are overweight! Get them fit too.

    Hi everyone!

    I excersise 5-6 days a week, in the morning. First I excersise my mind through Meditation 15-30 minutes.

    Then I weight train or do plyometrics with Chelean Extreme by Beach Body. It's like the lighter version of P90X.

    I find that if I don't work out, it's harder to focus and get the job done when I jump online. Anyone else have that problem?

      Allot of good advice and fitness tips here.

      For those of you doing the P90X thing, you are all awesome physical specimens. After watching their advertisements on TV, one thing did seem clear to me. Unless the box includes instructions on rolling back my age to the early twenties when I was in better shape, their workout might actually shorten my life span instead of lengthen it.

      The bottom line for me is that I remember to move long enough and often enough to get oxygen into the blood stream and then pump it to my rapidly diminishing brain cells. For that I prefer walking 30 to 60 minutes per day, at least five days per week. It's also a good time to think, or listen to a seminar on my MP3 player.

      Also, I find that it is important to stretch out after walking to avoid back problems as a result of sitting at the computer all day.

    • I need exercise on a daily basis, otherwise I get depressed and I can't think clearly. Exercise always makes me feel euphoric and gives me the energy to devote my time to affiliate marketing.

      I swim, do pullups, pushups, some high kicking like in taekwondo.

      If you are all sitting at the computer, and want a quick exercise that can be done at home, you should try burpees:

      1. Do a regular bodyweight squat while letting your hands touch the floor.
      2. Transition to a pushup position at the top.
      3. Do a pushup.
      4. Get back up into the squat position
      5. And JUMP! As high as you can!

      You can search for 'burpees' in Google, and you will see what I mean. These burpees will kill you if you are a newbie, but if you do them religiously, your fat will be stripped off your body! At least that's what happened to me.

    I walk from my place to the subway, to and fro takes me about half an hour. That's my daily exercise! And I've just started playing tennis twice a week.

    It's definitely good to exercise because when you're always in front of the computer, you're almost like a coach potato just that your fingers are doing lots of exercises!

    Just a quick tip - if anyone is nervous about going to the gym because of how they will look or what they know - DON'T BE.

    The belief that I would look like an idiot in the gym is what kept me from not going for too long.

    I have never met anyone in the gym with an attitude - maybe I am just lucky, but even some of the most shredded guys in there would answer my questions, spot for me and help when they could.

    If you do something stupid or dangerous they will tell you.

    I just wanted to let people know that because that nervousness kept me out of the gym for too long.

      This is a really interesting thread. It's nice to see so many active people here.

      After working from home full time on IM, I found myself getting a little soft around the belly for the first time ever. It was quite the wake up call, as I used to bike a hilly route to work 4 days a week 30 mins each way and was pretty hard.

      The answer I found came in 2 parts:

      1) Decide to. A cliche I know, but really, it works. No "I'm a bit busy so...".

      2) The "Seven Minute Secret". If you're feeling buggered, commit to just 7 minutes. Chances are you'll get into the swing of it by then and continue on. It works, and not just for exercise!

      Here's one tip for joggers here. Jogging at a steady pace is pretty inefficient. Try interval-jogging, something like one minute normal pace, 30 seconds fastish, repeated to make up your 30 minutes or however long you jog for.

      Or do it via distances: 2 street lights at normal pace, one fastish.
      You'll burn more calories and get a lot fitter. Really, truly, efficient.

    Exercising is very good for your mind and soul but I also found that taking a 48-72 hour mini vacation once every 2-3 months is also good for you mind and soul and this recharges your emotional battery.

    Last year, I used to go to Niagara Falls for 2 days without my laptop and it did me a lot of good. I will probably go in a few weeks again to recharge my emotional battery since I had a tough few months in my IM business.

    Every day at least a brisk half hour walk. The rest is diet. Though I'm looking at getting back into weightlifting, I'm happy to say I've lost and kept off around 15 pounds. This is why I love summer, so bright warm and cheerful, just makes you want to get out there.

    I have benched over 400 pounds for reps, and do a body builders work out I also run 6 miles every other day and do sprint repeats on the track and I 'm only 212 pounds and 6 foot 2.....doing 100's of pushups won;t build any solid strength....you need heavy weights....and keep progressing to higher levels...then see what you can do.
    I know there's a few guys in warriors who lift weights.....so I am not the only guy....Take care

    The fact that you get to workout and work at the same time is priceless in itself. And lets face it, most of us who spend time on the computer screen (whether working or not/whether making money or not, simply facebooking or something) develop laziness, tiredness and a big pot of belly fat over time.

    Your Idea may be simple but It definitely is creative and effective. I personally do something similar but will try this as well.

    I walk just about everyday. My car was totaled a month ago and I have had to rely on public Transportation for my commutes. I walk 3 miles at least 4 days a week. I am involved with at least two hiking clubs here. I am used to doing 6-10mile hike which is no big deal for me. A few weeks ago I had myself check out and I was told I am in fantastic health.       Running..... Just start with that.

          Awesome... I love running and did it regularly for many years prior to coming to egypt earlier this year. I can't run on the streets here due to the pollution and mental traffic and the local gyms are really expensive..... so stuck with my p90x now. Luckily p90x is pushing me in different ways, combined with running it would be the best program ever!

    I just finished month one of an awesome routine called p90x... It lasts for 90 days if you follow wschedule but can be used however you feel.

    Here is a rough look at the schedule for month 1.

    Monday: Chest and Back (weights routine, pull ups and push ups), 15minutes stomach
    Tuesday: Plyometrics (Tough cardio jump training)
    Wednesday: Shoulders and arms (weights routine, push ups), 15monutes stomach
    Thursday: Toga for 1.5 hours
    Friday: Kenpo (cardio workout with punches and kicks
    Saturday: Rest or stretch routine.

    They have a good diet plan with it too but I have not finished that. Really am feeling fitter than I have in a while and although only lost 4.5lbs in first month I have an inch less on my waist and can feel the strength of my youth coming back!

    Exercise is important and if you don't want to go 6 days a week on something like p90x then some pushups / crunches and a few runs a week does wonders.

    There was a book years ago that I saw that was all about working out in a prision cell... I thought it would be ideal for bloggers or office workers but I have not managed to find it online as can't remember the name of it.

    Fresh and raw fruits and veg combined with healthy unmodified proteins (except red meats which has been proven to lead to Cancer) along with about 30 minutes of brisk exercise every single day will make you so much younger and fitter within a few months than you can ever imagined. I was obese once and this routine managed to chistle a 6 pack within about 9 months. I do speed interval cardio 4 times a day and weights targeting my big muscle groups 3 times a week.

    Also avoid absolutely EVERYTHING that contains any kind of flour, sugar or salt. So if you grab a pizza or a burger you already know they contain flour not to mention everything else. Simple regime that's completely transformed my life and it will do the same for EVERY SINGLE person who tries it.

      I firmly believe an active lifestyle is a must in order to attain maximum mental output throughout each day.

      My last 6 months have been a tale of two sides. The first side was me dedicating myself 100% to building my businesses and building my team etc...I found myself working 12-14 hours per day on this and had NO time to partake in physical activity. I found myself making poor judgements and I felt burnt out.

      So I decided 3 months ago to visit the gym each morning to get my day started. I wake up at 7:00 am do 1 hour of work with my staff remotely, and then head to the gym for an hour. I then continue to do work throughout the day (typically 7-8 hours tops now) as opposed to the 14 hours in the previous paragraph.

      After the workouts I feel mentally ready to attack any problem. I simply get work done faster and smarter than when I was completely sedentary. I know for a fact that it has helped me and I have made it a permanent staple in my day to day way of life.

      Excercise is one of the BEST things you can do for your productivity. Think of it like a business investment. It makes you so much mentally sharper and you have more energy throughout the day. You also sleep better (just make sure you don't do cardio too close to bedtime, as that can sometimes leave you feeling to energized to sleep).

      Besides, what's the point of making all this money in your business if you don't have your health?

        i agree with this. A few years back i switched jobs which involved a lot of heavy lifting. At that time i was carrying extra weight so i changed my eating habits and also started to play 5 a side footy (soccer) with my mates. All this combined made the weight steadily come off, i had a jawline again and i had never felt better. I then got switched to an office job where i worked and i was dreading it because i have always felt lethargic just sitting about but because i still played the footy twice a week, did sit ups, push ups and used an exercise bike, i still felt really alert and my mind was always clear at work. I put all this down to feeling physically fitter and being a happier person and it definately made me more prodcutive at work.

        As for dont do cardio to close to bed time, well this was my main problem. Because of work commitments for some of the lads who played footy, we couldnt all play until late on at night, in fact we alsways had to book the last session at the sports centre. We didnt get on the pitch until 9pm and because there was nobody else due on court after us we always stayed on for an extra 20 mins or so. By the time i got showered and then home it was almost 11pm and my heart was still pumping, not good when you have to be up at 6 for work

    I am a chronic procrastinator when it comes to exercising and really admire those that do it consistently because I know it's a good to do. I do exercise every now and then, I pick up do it consistently for a while, see results and I back off.

    I guess to put it in an optimistic way, I set a goal for myself, work hard on it, achieve the goal and drop off. However, I know it will be better to continue otherwise I lose what I worked on, so I will do my best and work on this area of opportunity.

    It's interesting (and positive) to see that a good number of the responses show that computer people really do exercise. Break those stereotypes down!

    In addition to my own internet marketing and running websites of my own, I work full time as a web developer/designer, so I'm literally on a computer all day. Because of that, I make an extra effort to go to the gym at least 3-5 nights a week, and usually work out for 30-45 minutes.

    It's important to take care of yourself, and yes, you can also notice a difference in your intellectual performance after you've got some more blood flowing to your brain. Keep it up!

    A great way to tone, optimize your energy, and potentially lose weight.
    I like to add: squating with your back against the wall, thighs parallel to floor for 30-60 seconds or whatever you can do, then build on it...great for toning your hips, and thighs and only requires moving from your chair to the nearest wall.

      Exercise is great for keeping your stress level down as well. It also keeps you mentally strong.

      Although, I get bored with traditional exercise and need to be in something competitive to keep my mind off of the burn.

      Which is why, I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the side. Trying to avoid getting a limb broken or choked unconscious is an incredible workout! :p

    What an interesting thread, with many valid points.

    Of course exercise is important (or even vital).

    I use a vibrating platform twice a day, 10-minute sessions: first thing in the morning and first thing when I come home after work.

    I am averaging a kilogram off my weight every seven days.

    Began using the VP on June 5; weighed 78.5kg; on June 26, weighed 74.6kg.

    Mind you, I eat sensibly and enjoy walking.

    I am 60 and plan to retire from journalism later this year after a 41-year career.

    I tend to sit too much at my workstation 8-10 hours a day, and so the VP is the ideal exercise machine for me.

    Experts tell me that a 10-minute session on a VP is equivalent to 40 minutes of aerobics.

    Do a Google on vibrating platforms for a peek at the new way of exercising at home.

    My VP cost $AUS600 and I can choose up to 20 speeds and I can do 20 different exercises (standing, bending, stretching, sitting, kneeling, using restraining straps).

    I have been told the German team members in the World Cup use VPs as part of their training.

    VPs in gyms cost thousands of dollars but VPs for home-use have become affordable during the past 12 months.

    I recently developed HBP, and I'm assuming it's because of my constant computer work, lack of exercise, and just too much working.

    So now, I've started to exercise more, I've started making alot more money so I work less, and I'm trying to start putting the computer away at a certain time, which as you can see at 2:30am that, putting the computer up isn't working well. lol

    But the excercise is going well, and I'm eating alot better. It's a process, not something that will happen overnight, but it's going good!

    I'm lovin this forum. Great group of people on here, with alot of the same problems as me.

    I exercise almost every day now. When I started working online I barely exercised at all. Feeling like I actually have a business and can be productive every day actually makes me have more energy.

    In fact, I could never run more than a mile at a time less than a year ago. Now I can run 3 miles straight without having to walk in between.

    Before I became a professional writer I was teaching Pilates - a hangover from my acting days and absolutely vital if you spend hours every day sat in front of a computer. It gives you the core stability necessary to keep your back straight rather than hunched and your abdominals from popping out all over the place as you slump at the keyboard.

    That combined with Muay Thai boxing proved the perfect combo until I had my daughter and had to re-think my regime. Now I go to bootcamp every Monday morning in our local park with a few of the other school mums. There we are whipped into shape by one of the school dads who is also a world-class sprinter and leaves us panting far behind him while the dog walkers look on and giggle.

    It's a great way to start the week and I also throw in a regular advanced Pilates class and another gym session as well as endless running around after my now 8 year-old. When I'm really going for it writing a new book or setting up a web project I make sure I go for a walk in the middle of the day, if only for 30 mins. I take a notebook along and find it gets those ideas flowing so well that I come back with a ton of new material. Think of it as a moving meditation.

    Oh and one more tip - keep breathing. Really breathing. Sit up or better still stand up and take some big breaths into your lungs. Place your thumbs under your rib-cage, one on each side, and try to push them apart as you fill up with air before letting it out sloooooooowly. This is what is called back breathing and opera singers swear by it. You'll find that you really oxygenate your mind and body and a few minutes of this is far more energising than a cup of coffee...

    Although frankly I could never give up my daily cup of Colombian...

    I recommend running a few miles per day. It is very empowering and raises your heart rate and energy level exponentially.

    If you do so, I suggest looking into barefoot running (Google or Youtube it) or pick up some Vibrams (barefoot shoes), so that you can run as the human body evolved to run. It makes a dramatic difference in your endurance.

    I've got a decent size home office and so I've intentionally set up my gym in there as well to prompt me. Throughout my work day I'll take 10-15 minute breaks and get on the exercise bike, do some bench presses, some flyes or some squats.

    It's amazing how these short focused sessions give you an energy boost and the lean muscle that lifting weights builds is a great calorie burner. Really helps keep them fat cells at bay when you sit down in front of the computer for x number of hours per day.

    I've exercised for the last 10 years now and I truly believe that it keeps my head clear and my energy high.

    I feel less stress and less anxiety when I exercise regularly. Right now I'm working my way to the P90X along with a lot of the others here. I have the program just haven't started it yet.

Do this and I guarantee you'll make more money: Exercise 5 hours per week, Cut down your alcohol drinking to only 1 night a week like Saturday night.     This is such a great thread. It's so easy to become lazy, sat down all day working at the computer. Although working online can bring great benefits, the actual sitting down all day certainly isn't one of them. I like to walk whenever I can - in fact I pretty much walk everywhere. But I love what you guys have said about doing certain exercises and feeling more energised for work - I think this is exactly what I need.

    Hi, in answer to your question about whether we exercises, well I certainly do now, but did not for many years.

    I tried running outside, but it played havoc on my shins and ankles, and i did warm up beforehand, but since i bought a treadmill i now run in the comfort of my own home and my ankles and shins are OK.

    I play racketball once or twice a week now with my eldest son, so with the running as well it helps a great deal with the cardio.

    I find that with eating the right foods at the right time has also helped with my fitness regime.

    So in answer to your question, Yes I do exercise regularly!!

    Thank you for bumping this thread.

    Exercise has become a very important part of my life. My weekly workouts consist of a mix of bodyweight and kettlebell exercises 3-4x every week. I also briskly walk at least 1 mile 3x every week.

    My diet has changed as well. Things like Fast Food and other heavily processed foods have been reduced to 1 meal per week. Sodas have been replaced by tea and water. Sugar in general has been reduced to levels that I didn't believe were possible for me. My food portions have shrunk and I try to leave a lil' on the plate. My grandma told me to eat an apple a day, so I buy bags of red and green organic apples and munch away. Every day. The same goes for fresh veggies and salads. It shocks me to think how I could go weeks without putting anything fresh into my body

    A couple of tools that I use are Pocket Trainer and miCoach. Both of these are apps for blackberry(might be iPhone/Android as well) that take care of workout creation and stat tracking. Outsource the tedium and get to work!

    Good idea runfast.

    It always makes me feel better to do some exercise. Often lately, I just get up, and straight away go to the computer!!
    But you need a balance, and you will have more energy if you can stretch, push up or do some stretches etc. before you start! Your shoulders get very stiff sitting at the computer, not good for your hands, arms, back etc. so need to take breaks also, every hour or so, and go for a walk or more around.

      I used to exercise every morning before i started work. Now that ive shifted to working at home i find it harder rather then easier to get back into it.

      Seems absurd but i think being at home more makes one more likely to put it off not less, as you can more easily just say "ill do it later"

      Think i need to start doing Tai Chi or something in the morning again at least, my work is suffering noticeabley as a result of not exercising.

    yeah that is a great idea for sure. i also like to work at 50 min increments..take 20 min break...no computer on break...and then work another 50 min and repeat. I've found that this keeps you fresh and motivated and doesn't strain your eyes too much. Adding the exercise on the breaks will make this routine much more beneficial.

    Love your idea... don't forget some simple ab work. Another issue is food! Whenever I put anything remotely "bad" in my mouth... I have to do 25 jumping jacks. It's a good awareness piece that keeps me from mindless eating!

    Sounded a bit weird to me at first glance. But thinking of it this might be a good idea and also improve your health. 20 minutes sounds a bit short to me 30 minutes seems to be more relaxed.

    Its funny, but the great entreprenur Mark Howe from the UK, inventor of the roulette prediction device with whom I had the pleasure of working with 20 years ago, spent much of his time training, he would box, do martial arts, weight train, run, cycle. When I asked him why he needed to do this, he said, fit in body, fit in mind, without this, I would have never ever had the mind to do the great things I have. He also said, take a look at a gym car park, especially where you have extreme sports people, such as gymnasts, weight lifters, bodybuilding, martial artists, they are all successful, look at their cars, well the majority of them. Because they are not lazy people. They apply the input into their body like they do their mind. If you are a slob, then you can be sure that any business will be run in a slobish manner and be unsuccessful!

    I have slacked off HEAPS over the last fair few years. I have decided to start running 3 times a week if I can. I am terrible at it, as I am so unfit, but I have been a total of 4 times now, and I ran my furthest ever without stopping once yesterday!

    I have always hated excerise and especially running. This is sort of the reason I chose it. I don't like it, but its rewarding. Ive mainly not liked it because I get puffed out very fast. There is no reason that I cant build up stamina and be able to run for miles, except my own attitude and lazyness. I have decided mentally that I want to be able to achieve a few goals when it comes to fitness, and one is running to a certain place from my house. I said to myself I will do it and just work my way up. Well i surprised myself yesterday when I actually ran the distance I thought wasnt going to be able to do for a few weeks at least. Its amazing what you can do when you actually want to. Its the same as IM and SEO, if you want it you will get it. Use that mentality with health and fitness and you get the same results.

    I've always been big into exercise but one thing which I have found really useful (which I actually picked up from Eben Pagan) is to move my daily run to first thing in the morning.

    Every morning the first thing I do is drink some water, put on my running shoes and start running, then when I get back to my apartment building I hit the gym.

    I was never a big on morning exercise but adopting this as a habit has made a huge difference, I do this almost every day where as if planned my gym / run for the afternoon often other things would get in the way.

    It really sets me up for the day.

    The Power of Full Enagagement by Tony Schwarz. In my mind this is one of the best books of self improvement available. And is great if you are like me and you like practical advice that you can quickly put in place rather than "concepts"

        I found a Chrome extension called Strict Pomodoro that has helped me a lot. By default it times my work in 30 minute blocks...25 minutes of work and a 5 minutes break. You should check it out. (It's free and I've got no affiliation with it).

        During the break I'll do pushups, squats, jump rope, stretching, whatever. Exercise makes you twice as productive. At least that's what Richard Branson says, and he's just slightly more productive than me.

    200 push-ups holy cow!

    I can't do regular pushups anymore as my right hand suffers already from carpal tunnel and it hurts like hell, so either I do it with fists closed and a towel or with bars which I don't have but I never did 200 push-ups before! :O

    Anyway I'm more of a runner kind of guy, so what I normally do is run around six daily miles and that usually gives me a lot of energy to start the day and also get really cool ideas while running ;-)

    I have NOT been running lately though so this was a good reminder to get of my butt and start doing something good for my heart, thanks!

    I just got back from an afternoon run. I used to run, spin class, and lift weights in the morning, but prefer it in the afternoon now. Since I work from home it's a good excuse to get outside for some fresh air and break my day in half so it doesn't feel like I'm trapped in my house.

    Plus, I'm wide awake in the morning anyway, so I like to exercise mid-day in order to get a second wind and come back for the rest of my workday and beyond with lots of energy. Running also helps me clear my mind. I leave the office with my head FULL of nonstop thoughts and then feel it all dissipate as I'm breathing fresh oxygen in and releasing thoughts and worries out.

      The exercise machine you see on tv, how many of them work?
      I personally exercise almost everyday, by going to the gym. Morning exercise is the best, it gets me awake, and the shower afterwards is just so energizing. I think i consider myself quit fit and healthy

        I used to run a lot, but I'm not so much now that I'm doing a lot of running for work. I need to start again. It's hard having time with a full time job and trying to start an IM business, but the benefits are worth it. I always feel MUCH better on the days I exercise.

    I personally subscribe to the "Leangains" intermittent fasting and lifting regimen. Essentially, you fast for 16 hours, then have an eight hour eating window. This theory runs contra to the common 5-6 meals per day prescription, but after researching and practicing I find it to be far more plausible (I have tried both, for the record). My mind feels sharp during the fasted state, and I rarely if ever feel hungry.

    Leangains training includes compound lifts (i.e. deadlift, squat, bench press, chins) three times per week, with some accessory work thrown into the mix. I make steady, consistent gains each month. I love it -- highly recommended.

    I try and get to the gym 5 times a week, do split routines on the weights Mon/Tue, pure cardio Wed, a class Thurs (circuits) then full body workout with weights Friday and take the weekend off!!

    Find that usually works for me and if life/work etc get in the way then its fairly flexible as broadly interchangeable.

    Find that some exercise is a must given amount of time spent on computers!!

      I'm usually up every morning at 5am thanks to my six month old. I found that if I went back to bed I would feel even worse so I go for a run now. I have since added strength training at the gym which I love. So I went from doing absolutely nothing to training 6 days a week! I love it and feel so much better for it. It's my stress buster and it clears the mind.

      There's no way I can't exercise. When I don't I feel so tense and unwell. So I do a full cardio and weight lifting exercise every other day which keeps me nice and loose.

      However I do envy those who don't need exercise at all but seem to keep sane lol I have a few friends like that now in university and they do not go to the gym or anything but they're still stick thin. Just genes I guess but I actually like the fact that exercise and pushing myself each time i workout feels so good.

      Nah, not strange at all, just ironic. I have had plenty of niches i crushed it in but didn't have first hand experience of the problem the product solved or cured. I would be one messed up person if i only sold products that had previously applied to me, that's a lot of niches/problems lol

      I will say though that products from people who practice what they preach tend to be far BETTER than those from people just trying to make money. That's almost more applicable to the IM niche than to the fitness niche, but is nonetheless true for both.

      And did you mean that you smoke for all of those 16 hours that you're working? I've heard of having breaks for smoking but smoking the entirety of 16 hours on a consistent basis will kill you pretty quickly :p

    Very awesome idea indeed! Some people make the excuse of not being able to go to the gym etc but this is something anyone can do at home and by really being consistent it can do wonders for them.

    This is something I want to be more consistent at in the morning before I start my day and of course the gym etc is the great bonus workout on certain days. Also do not forget guys to implement a healthy lifestyle as much as you can with your occasional cheat days.

    I do 100 pushups, 100 squats, and 100 sit-ups 6 days a week first thing when I wake-up in the morning.

    It helps me get ready for the rest of the day and it helps boost my self-confidence, because I know most people would make excuses or take days off.

    I've been doing this since January of this year and it has been a great addition to my daily routine.

    Hmmm... Sounds like 'work' to us!

    How about our routine? ...When we were living next to a snowboard resort, we'd catch the shuttle outside our condo up to the mountain, ride for a couple hours then ride the backcountry home.

    But the snow is gone from Tahoe.

    So now we are living on the beach in Mexico and go SUP Surfing every other day for 2-3 hours per day.

    Daily walks/hikes are mixed in no matter where we are.

    Fun, rejuvenation, meditation and exercise all mixed in while riding waves

    I am glad to see all the people in here who work out in some form. So do I. I suppose you would say I am doing a p90x/insanity hybrid. I do some of both. I went through p90x except for the yoga.

    My time schedule has made it hard to completely do insanity but I work on it as I can until I can use it as designed. I find that I thoroughly enjoy pull ups with the p90x pull up bar.

    I enjoy doing the running man and some of the other cardio exercises individually when time doesn't allow a full dvd workout.

    I think it is safe to say that working out and taking care of our health allows us to be more productive than the other side of the coin. I would like to see more people have the confidence that working out regularly can give you.

    Yes exercising does help.

    It's helped me a ton especially with my self confidence. After I lost about a good 65 pounds . My confidence sky rocketed and so did my success and productivity.

    I used to have exercising. Now I love it and embrace it whenever I can get it.

    I TOTALLY agree with the idea of exercising inbetween your work day. I take regular breaks to go and take a walk outside for half an hour, or to do a few pushups as you mentioned. It helps with your body getting weak if you work a lot!

    A healthy body is a healthy mind after all!

      Intense workout 4 afternoons a week. Light workout (yoga mostly) 5 mornings followed by meditation before I get my day started. I find my day just goes a whole lot more smoothly if I can keep this routine.
      Plus I usually attack my toughest takes with more confidence after an intense workout.

    Exercise does not mean doing physical activities only. We can sit on the chair in front of the computer and move our legs.. do knee exercise and so on. Always remember 'exercise' - link with our brains and we use that all the time; which means we do some sort of exercise all the time.
