What are some fears that make you uncomfortable?

I think it's sometimes good to express our fears so we can help each other out through empathy. I think fear is that one roadblock that really prevents us from true success, or the things we want in life such as wealth and happiness, because fear causes us to be uncomfortable and takes us out of our comfort zones. Here are some of mine:

1. I fear not being able to repay my parents for the opportunities in life they have given me.

2. I fear speaking in public, especially when it comes to talking to strangers.

3. I also have a fear of insects (even though I took an entomology class in college)...

That felt good! I hope I can conquer these fears to become a stronger person, as I work on them daily. I'd like to know if people here have similar or perhaps completely opposite fears that I've never been aware of. So list or share some of your fears with the forum and see what we come up with.

Note: If you are already feeling fear posting your fears for others to see, it's perfectly fine too.

I don't have some real fear of something but i remember i had height o phobia and that was on peak. I was so scared of going at heights but then i tried to fight with my fear and after that i successfully did skydiving too
After that, I just believe that there is no such fear because you are the only one who creates it and you are the only one who can fight with it too
    Thanks

I have a weird case of acrophobia (fear of heights)...I don't start getting nervous until I'm about 30 feet up, and then I stop being afraid once I hit about 400-500 feet -- looking down from the top of a skyscraper doesn't scare me! Weird, right? I'm also not as nervous if I know that I'm secure on whatever I'm standing on.

I'm also deathly afraid of bees or other flying, stinging things. Not helpful when I'm a door-to-door salesman for lawn care in the summer, and everybody has flowers by their door!

I used to be afraid of speaking in public but I'm not really anymore. I'm a young preacher in training so I'll definitely have to get over it!

      Tristan,

I agree that it is sometimes good to get our fears out in the open. I believe if we get them out into the open we have a better chance of doing something about them.

We must remember that fear is a natural emotion, others include love, hate, happiness, sadness just to name a few.

Fear is only an emotion, it may feel like a real presence although it is not. Fear in itself can not hurt us, I know sometimes it feels that way, but remember it is just an emotion. How we deal with our fears is much more important than the fear itself.

I know most people fear speaking to a group more than death. This is one of those fears I don't understand. I enjoy speaking in front of both large groups and small groups. My fear is talking to someone one-on-one. Most people I know can not believe this. They think since I can speak to many speaking to one should be easy. I have worked very hard overcoming this fear and I still struggle with it almost every day.

I have learned many ways to help diagnose and overcome fear.

Thank you for the topic Tristan. I hope many others will post here. The more we understand and confront fear the more fearless we become.

      Have a great day.

I have a fear of snakes that I just can't
    shake.

I'm thinking about going to see someone
to help me get over it.

    I can't enjoy being outside b/c I'm always
on the lookout for a snake.

My kids love to be outside - and I don't let
them know I'm scared to death.

I know how LOA works so I'm also afraid
    I'll "attract" them to me.

Crazy...I know...but it just won't let me go.

So... so far we have heights and snakes as major fears. I think I fear heights more than snakes; at least you can run away from snakes!

Thom, you fear speaking to groups more than one-on-one? Wow, I've never heard that one before, but I guess that could be because there's more pressure when someone has their full, undivided attention on you. Also, congrats on your first post and welcome to the forum.

Scared of being embarassed - so that leads to a huge fear of public speaking. Which is weird because in elementary school i did well in speech competitions and was often to lead or a key role in plays.

I HATE heights...even like a balcony on a high rise s enough to freak me out. i always told my friends it wasnt falling I was scared of, it was the landing.

There are also a number bugs that I hate - earwigs and junebugs being two of my most hated.

  • Great question. I fear the following:

    1. Being thrown in a summing pool at a pool party. I can not swim (bad experience at Santa Monica beach).

    2. Being caught at the top of a roller coaster due to malfunctioning.

    3. Experiencing a bird strike while in flight.

      This is a great thread.

The only way you can overcome a fear inside
of you is to give it a name...

To become aware of its existence, you can now
take back the power it has over you.

Bring it outside of yourself, talk about it, share it
with others and you will start looking at it like a
separate entity, in which you can now control.

A fear of mine was always heights, until I would
speak to everyone about it and insist that we go
hiking on the top of a mountain.

Went to the top and forced myself to sit on a cliff
and become aware of the feelings and emotions that
were running through my mind at that moment.

I then forced my brain to reprogram and associate
a different emotion when presented with the same
      circumstance.

Now when I go up high, I focus on the thought of being
      free and having power!

      Great technique!

I'm terribly shy. I always thought I would outgrow it, but it seems that I never did. But, I do warm up eventually. Its funny because I always wanted to be one of those "life coaches" or a personal trainer. You can't be that shy in those professions.

Funny though. I am not afraid backcountry skiing or downhilling on my mt bike and stuff even though most people say they would be terrified.

I think it is things that can harm me where I have no control over it. I hate flying, I fear disease. I don't fear ripping through the tree on skis or a bike, I dont fear avalanches.

Hey Travis, I'm sorry about your brother. It's courageous what he tried to do. I think much our are fears do come from traumatic events that we have experienced somewhere in our past. The ocean, although it may symbolize sereneness and calmness, is also a destroyer of life if one's not careful. I hope you can get over your fear of the ocean, and I'm glad you still can swim around in swimming pools.

I feel so sorry for travis. Well i myself had that situation in my life 2 years back when 2 of my brothers went to a river just for fun and one died (second one tried to save him a lot) but in the end he was himself about to drown and could not hold my other brother as river streams are really dangerous so other one just died
It was like the most shocking situation of my life because my brother (who was alive) was completely not in his senses and was taking himself responsible for his death because he was unable to save him but obviously no one can fight when death is with you.
May God rest him in peace and Travis' brother as well

Its not something Im comfortable about speaking about, but its something that Im learning to live with. Its a rather unusual condition, and one that Id rather be without. Most days Im fine, infact I may go for 6 months without an attack, then BAM, an anxiety attack. Its been a long hard struggle to say the least, especially when you fear, fear itself for no apparent reason.

In my case, my biggest fear is losing my health or someone dear to me.

I guess the other stuff is easier to deal with, but sometimes getting sick cannot be avoided even if we live a healthy life, eating the right foods, etc. Same with losing someone dear, it's always sad when a life is lost but no doubt is even worse when is someone close to you, sometimes it takes years to bounce back from something like that (if you ever do).

I have no real fears. Fear is natural. If it wasn't for fear we may not be alive. It's part of our evolution. People are afraid of snakes because snakes can kill and if you were not afraid you may get killed. People are afraid of the dark because it was more likely in ye very olden days that people, like most mammals, would get killed at night.

There is a book called 'Feel the fear and do it anyway'. I have not read it but I have heard it is a great book. It may help some of you guys.

Fear is invariably linked to a event in your life which created a strong emtional context which happened once.

Because of the negative context and the strong emotional content this can limit you in the most peculiar way.

I hate cockroaches and dislike spider. Although I can cope with spiders and in a way are fascinated by them and if they are on can be calm about them but roaches just for some reason disgust me.

as for facing your fear changing the association the way Global greg described was an excellent way of doing it.

I used to have a fear of heights until I went for a parachute jump, this fixed it. Now when I start to have various fears: lack of something or other I just look at it square on and very quickly realize that I have bought into the general "fear" propaganda dispersed by the media. There are so many fears one can have and they are all unfounded, well most or them, take the swine flu for example, more people die every year of the normal seasonal flu, yet people have canceled holidays out of fear.
I could go on, just remember that people in fear are easy to manipulate.

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."

      Hi,
Death is the absolute certainty in life [some people add taxes to that], so you can learn to live with the thought of death.

I too am terrified of death and share your exact sentiments about ceasing to exist. Not only my own, but also the death of those I love. I'm sure that the fear I experience isn't actually rational, and I'm getting a little more on top of it now. I lost a family member who I was very close to late last year, and it was the first time I've lost anyone close to me at all. Until then it wasn't something I worried about too much, and I'm sure in time I'll come around.

I'm also terrified of heights. I used to be really bad - I passed out once on the fire escape during a fire drill in high school - but I've been learning to deal with it and facing up to it. Last year I did an abseil down the side of a building to raise money for cancer research. I almost didn't do it, but knowing that loads of people were watching, including the aforementioned family member who was dying from cancer at the time, made me suck it up and get on with it. I haven't been as bad since then.

I think we all pretty much have the same fears like, fear of death, fear of death of loving ones, fear of not being accepted by people... I think there are a lot of fears from our past, that our ancestors gave us. But if you know it's only a fear then it might be easier. Basically it's only an emotion, but still you know that there is a chance something you fear might happen so it doesn't go away. I think we all should just have faith and don't think about it.

It's very easy to say that :p

There are so many fears we can pick to paralyze us into inaction, the easiest way to overcome them is to see them as just fears, projections of our imagination of things that may or may not happen.

FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real

We create our own fears when we do not do things correctly. FEAR = GIVE UP. When we do something for the first time and we do it wrong, we create our own fear. Afraid of getting into trouble or doing it wrong again, we give up.

We should just park this word FEAR aside. At any point of time when we encounter discomfort, we should take a step back to understand and analyze the situation then prescribe the correct solution to it.

You have to realize that fear and faith come from the same source.

In both cases, you cannot see what you are fearing, or what you have faith in.

But, in both cases, depending upon what you choose to pursue, you will manifest. So, if you fear the worst, you can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. But, also, if you choose to have faith, you will also create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, choose to have faith in what you will receive, and leave fear behind!

    Make it a great day!

Fears are bullies in that respect, they don't like it when they start being challenged! I've found that online therapy has given people an opportunity to confront their fears from a safe position and it is often easier to talk with a counsellor online in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
