I am on Mental Diet for 10 days need your suggestion

Hi Friends,

After reading a lot about positive thinking and changing one 's mindset. I came across the article about 7 days mental diet which is also recommended by Tony. I decided to go for Mental Diet for 10 days.

If you are not aware about mental diet please read this post The Seven Day Mental Diet. I am doing mental diet from 10 days but I am failing every single day. Now the time period to do it successfully is going from 10 minutes flat to 10 hours long and I am sure that within 30 days I am able to complete my 10 days mental diet.

I am basically relied on powerful Habitual Question from Tony Robinson. Whenever I am in the tough situation I just asked myself how can I convert this problem into assets and how can thrive in this circumstances. I am getting some help and also enjoying the benefits but this is a real struggle. I find that I am just talking myself and focusing myself again and again on the positive question. And this create the headache and also two short sleep nights. But I am also getting benefits from it.

Do you provide any other suggestion from your experience which help me to go through the mental diet in easy way.

thanks & regards,
Sanjay Sharma

There is an actual diet that can sharpen positive thinking and restore us to our optimal and natural state of being, but I can see some serious trolling and ignorant posts stemming from that so I'll stick to the topic.

I find this simple procedure works better than any other. It is based on Buddhist principles and on my Learn-Plan-Act (LPA) model of problem solving.

When faced with a difficult situation:

    1. Observe the situation
    2. Accept the situation
    3. Quantify or describe what's wrong
    4. Describe what you want to fix (don't worry about the how)
    5. Learn as much as you factually can about the situation
    6. Come up with the first step, any step, to get the momentum going
    7. Take action, give yourself feedback, repeat 3 to 7 as required for successful outcome

Thanks for your solution but the real problem is that my conscious mind accept the situation but my unconscious mind does not accept the present situation. This create the problem for me. To accept it emotionally I am releasing on it. but it is taking too much time from me. Accepting the situation or circumstances emotionally is the real problem for me. I find that I am busy in convincing myself that accepting the situation is good and I have to do it. This is the real problem.

I am always talking a lot to myself and telling myself again and again that do not dwell on negative or participate in negativity. Offcourse I am getting some success with it but the resistance is so high that at the end of the day I find myself exhausted but mentally I feel peace. I like the peace feeling but does not like the headache and feeling drained.

Yes that is the easy part for me to change the negative language into the positive and right now I am doing it successfully. Instead of using calling problem as a challenge which seems fake to me I started asking questions from myself. How can I use this problem to move myself into the next higher level in all area of my life.

The real problem I find that whole day instead of concentrating on work I find that I am talking to myself and asking the question from myself again and again. Which is very frustrating for me. I am looking for a way in which I can live completely in mental diet but also able to change my thinking or focus without any resistance. I mean that I wanted to remove the resistance I am getting now to move into the positive side.

      Day - 1
      =====

After getting some feedback I am thinking about doing an mental diet journal so that I can be accountable to this place for completing this mental diet. I hope You do not mind it. I really want to be successful in this mental diet.

Today is the real struggle but having good results give me true satisfaction. I just wake up while remembering that I do not allow myself to indulge or dwell on dis-empowering subject. So after struggle for few minutes than I am able to focus myself on what I want.

when I started doing my work I am still struggling with it but I am focusing myself again and again on what I want by asking question that how can I use this circumstances to grow in every area of my life. I do not remember that how many times I let go of thinking about negative and take myself to focusing on empowering subjects by asking question. This is real struggle for me. And around 12.30 PM I find some peace.

This is incredible feeling to me. I have this kind of feeling 3-4 times in my life. Instead of focusing on my work I find that I am enjoying this feeling. around 2 pm i seriously start doing the work. and I find myself that i am concentrate myself fully in the task in hand. But the most important thing I find that the problem I am facing now is easily solved by myself which is not so often happened in my life. The frustration which take over on me on little problems are not having effect on me. I do not know that it is one time thing or consistent thing. Time will tell me about it. It is 10.30 PM here and I am still on diet and able to keep myself away from dwelling on dis-empowering subjects.

Thanks Dain Supero for your idea. I am going to do some meditation.

        Day - 2
Today is my second day of Mental Diet. To be honest I do not know that it is good for me or bad for me because whole day I am failed to keep myself focus on what i wanted and also reaping the benefits.

Today I gone through an intense problem afternoon. It is a problem which is related to past and happens many times, which occur again. In the past my whole week gone on tension and not able to do anything else. It takes all my energy. But today I am surprise that I am able to overcome on negative emotions within 10 minutes. and bounce back. This is very strange experience for me. At first I do not understand what is happening why I am still positive and thinking about solution. and the surprising factor is that I am able to come with a solution which solve the problem permanently. and all these things happen within 2-3 hours. First I am feeling awkward that how simple the solution is and why I am not able to come with this solution earlier. Why I am wasting too much time on the self-criticism and condemning myself. But now I am feeling very good inside.

The feeling of satisfaction come out from me and I am enjoying the feeling. Although I have to start the Mental Diet again because as per Tony Robins I am allowed only maximum two minutes to dwell or indulge in dis-empowering situation. It means that I am falied because it takes around 10 minutes to realize that I am focus on negative aspect of situation. But I am happy with the result I am getting now.

I am going to start my diet again from tomorrow.

ONE Question for you If anyone can answer it. : -

How one can change the meaning of situation consciously. Today I am happened to change the meaning of the situation without any conscious efforts or intention and than I am able to come with solution so I wanted to know that can anyone change the meaning of situation with making himself fool. If the answer is Yes than I am really interested to know the answers.

If you're using the word "meaning" in the context of "how the situation makes you feel," which I'm certain you are, then yes. It's not the situation that affects us but our perception of it.

It's not what happens that matters, it's what that event means to you. This interpretation, making emotional sense of events, is done by your subconscious mind (almost automatically).

Therefore to consciously alter your perception of something, you must change your subconscious beliefs about that something.

Usually any event and our reaction follows this order:

          1. Event occurs
          2. We gather sensory input about event
          3. Our frontal lobe rationally processes this input
          3. Our cerebellum or seat of the subconscious mind tries to make emotional sense of this event, or how it should make us feel, thus triggering neuropeptides to release certain hormones, which ultimately make us "feel" scared, happy, angry, whatever.

I hope this is of some help. I generally go about changing my mentality completely when I go into situations I know are going to stress me. I try to take things more passively now and break down problems or situations into pieces.

I feel like looking at problems like a big job causes me more stress, instead I pick one part of it and tackle that at a time.

I stay positive by staying busy on something I am trying to accomplish, and when I start feeling down or negative I remind myself why I'm doing it and break down what's causing the problem. I usually write an article or something about it, so hopefully in the future it can help others dealing with the same issues.

    Hope this helps some!

      Day - 3

Actually this is day 1 is for me because yesterday I am not able to consistently focus myself on what I want. The funny thing is that I am learning a lot during the mental diet. In the past I always read about the personal development and feel good about it. I do not go deep into the subject I am reading it now. I read philosophy about it and other stuff. now I find that I am looking for the material which is useful for me right now. I am just skimming through the material a lot more. No more unfocused reading the blogs and books instead I find that I read with the intention of something which make me feel good inside that I am using it instead of thinking about it. It means that the things which are helping me to stay positive in the present moment, no matter what, is getting my attention. It is my hobby to read about personal development articles, blogs and books with out any purpose. Not any more. I am now looking for the material which helps me right now to be positive.

One more thing I notice that Now I am going deep into the subjects. I am getting an kind of feedback which tell me that this technique work for me or not. For example affirmation. I always think that affirmation help me a lot So I am doing it for many years without thinking about the outcomes. But not any more. I am not saying the affirmation does not work. It works wonderfully for some person but not for me.
I also find that if I change the affirmation into a question and ask it from myself than I am not deluding myself.

I always use the affirmation, "Every day and in every way things are getting better and better and I am growing rich in every area of my life". But internally I does not believe it. I feel that I am telling lie to myself. Affcourse many people get most benefits from affirmation but I think it is not for me. Because this does not suit me. Now I put this into the question. How Can I make things getting better and better in the present moment and growing richer in every area of my life. this question put me into finding the ways to make it happen. I am accepting that my life is not positive right now but I am looking for the ways to make it happen.

Now my focus or searching for the answer is finding the ways to learn that how person give meaning to life situation. Because I know that how can I give meaning to my life situation and experience than I am able to live an peaceful life because whatever happening outside does not effect me internally. And for this purpose, I am searching in blogs and books on this subject. I am getting answer that our beliefs are responsible for meaning but I am sensing that we can also give meaning to the situation in certain way and it change us. I have read some material on this subject but did not use it in life situation. So within a day or two I am able to give some example that how I change the meaning of the situation and would it helpful to me or not.

Today I am not able to consistently continue for single day in mental diet. I have to start all over again from tomorrow. To me it seems failure but the strange thing is that I does not feel negative any more. Changing are happening in me. more and more helps are coming to me from within when I need them. I also find that in the middle of the problem I am still focusing on how to change this situation and feel good about it. If I compare Mr. Sanjay Sharma from 10 days earlier to Present Moemnt 's Mr. Sanjay Sharma I am noticing a lots of change in the positive way. This telling me that Choosing the mental diet helping me a lot. The difference I am noticing in myself is so profound that I am feeling winning instead of defeat inspite of this fact that I am not able to live more than one day in mental diet.

I am guessing what would happen If I am able to hold myself in positive state for 10 days consistently. Now I am believing that it will change my life for the better. This is the key to life. I wanted to write more but my other obligations does not allow me. Talk to you later.

And thanks Dain Supero for tell me about changing meaning of life. and thanks to Mr. crums1371 for giving me good advice. If anyone can point out to a good resource about changing the meaning of life situation than please write it in this thread so that it helps me to complete my mental diet successfully.

No I am not able to finish the challenge. In the latest attempt, I am able to go upto 7th day without any negative thought but fail again. So I give myself two day off. I will start again. I donot want to clutter this thread about my failure because it is going to discouraged lots of people. So I am writing in journal and if I am able to complete my mental diet successfully than I write my experience, insights on this thread.

If you are interested in doing it than I definitely recommend it. Even your fail attempts will bring good results. Now, even I am not able to finish 10 days challenge, but if I compare myself from 2 months ago than i can see the difference which is equivalent to day and night.

I am sticking to it because if it bring so much positive in my life in failed attempts what if I am able to complete it successfully.

    Hey Sanjay,

It might help to stop the mental chatter - stop struggling against it and, as others have said, focus on being in the moment. Then it is helpful to think of the things that you are grateful for, really feel it and it will help you to feel more in control. You can then look for the solution to the issue from a different perspective.

    I hope that helps

Thanks Pmcfitnes for your suggestion. Now things are easy for me. I am not struggling any more and find that I am positive in tough times. My mind automatically searching for good in the situation when it is happening at that moment. Which I cannot imagine, that I can do it, two month earlier. Now I am focusing more and more in the present moment. This helps me to stay positive and deals with the things right now. Moreover, I find that I am changing my meaning to the situation. Whenever, I face an tough situation, instead of beating myself, I find that I am looking for good in that situation and telling myself or thinking that this situation actually helping me to grow.. The habitual quality questions helping me a lot in the mental diet. Now I am start doing Meditation. Let me see how this effect me. I am also trying to be grateful but the situation here is tough for me so instead of feeling grateful, I find that I am looking for good in the situation but I am going to do it because gratitude is best emotion for abundance.

Second, I think a key thing to get you through this is to not beat yourself up for what you call failures, or for not being able to get to 10 days.

As I understand the challenge, the goal is NOT to never have a single negative thought, but to not dwell on any single negative thought. Big big big difference here. The question, then, is, how do you define "dwell"? In other words, what exactly constitutes dwelling on a negative thought? To me, dwelling on it means that you let yourself think that same thought over and over and thinking about all the implications of this one negative thought, and then it grows into how you always disliked this or that person or whatever the issue is, you think and think and think on it.

What you want to do is not allow yourself to fall into this pit of negativity, and instead switch out of the negative thought pattern and turn your focus to something else.

Even if you attempt to be AWARE of your reactions to negative thought patterns for a total of 10 days, it's still worth it to do the challenge and I don't think of it as a failure that you might have allowed yourself to dwell on something negative here or there. Because it's like practicing anything else, and it's something you get better at over time. If you practice awareness and awareness alone for 10 days, that is a big success in itself alone.
the basic rule for me in mental diet is that I does not allow myself to dwell or participate in any negative thoughts and feeling more than two minutes. Offcourse, negative thoughts are coming to my mind all days but i did not entertain myself on that thought. I just let it go. I am automatically aware about my thoughts pattern because of rule of not allowing the negative thoughts in my mind. I find that I am automatically checking myself that I am positive or negative. So I think that awareness is now going automatically. I am not doing any efforts on awareness but it is coming to me automatically.

Yes you are right that it is pretty difficult thing to do but if you done it successfully, you cannot imagine how far you reach. It is not about being positive only. it means that you are facing every fear and conquering it. I cannot write more about it because it is become long post. but definitely it worth it. I am going through very tough situation right now. and before two months if i know that i am going through this situation, I am gonna mad but now instead of gonna mad i find myself facing the situation gracefully and working on it. and at the same time laughing and enjoying the life. may be I cannot explain, but if you do it than you know how you changed yourself. Now small matters does not bother me anymore.

        Hi Sanjay,

I think you are being a little too hard on yourself. 7 days is by no means a failure, a lot of people couldn't hold out for 7 minutes (if they were to realize that they were thinking negatively in the first place). Also the two-minute limit is a bit extreme, five minutes seems more reasonable as it takes some time to just realize that we've gone into a negative pattern.

But anyway, congratulations, the fact that small matters no longer bother you and that you are aware of your thought patterns means that the diet was a success.

Yes, I am hard on myself (do you have any other choice when your stake is too high). I am one of them who cannot hold positivity even for 7 minutes and now here I came a long way to be successful upto 7 days. It is because I am too hard on myself and wanted to be successful. This is the experience I have which I write here. No Pain No Gain is the slogan what I denied most. I wanted to be successful without any pain and spend most of my life finding the way to be successful without any pain but not able to find it. To avoid the pain, I always choose the path of least resistance, which clearly shown in my behavior. I still have that trait, which is now very low in intensity. Results I am completely negative person and doing lots of things and working hard but still failure. So that is why i take the step to do mental diet for 10 days. But I does not consider myself an knowledgeable person on this subject. So I am open to the possiblility, if there is a way to complete the mental diet with ease, I am open to it.

The two minutes technique I borrowed from the Awaken the Giant within from Tony. In this book, Tony write that if you take the time of five minutes instead of two minutes than you are going to vent your emotion fast. I copy paste what he written in his book

"If you allow yourself to go as long as five minutes or more, you'll find the Mental Challenge won't accomplish its task; instead, you'll just learn to vent your emotions more quickly. The goal is to knock things out before you ever get in a negative emotional" Robbins, Anthony (2007-11-01). Awaken the Giant Within (Kindle Locations 6124-6126). Simon & Schuster, Inc..

This is the reason I stick with 2 minutes.

No, I am not fighting with the emotion. no way. I am just allowing them in my body and mind. What I am doing is that instead of resisting of the emotion I am feeling right now. I am asking quality question from myself. What is best thing about it ? How this lead me to next higher level in all area of my life ? How can I turn this failure into success and achievement ?. In the initial stage, I did not get any answer but I try to kept my mind on that questions and asking myself again and again. which help me to change my focus, I am feeling the emotion but my focus is on searching for what is good in this situation. At first it is hard labour for me and I am failing most of the time. But eventually I find that I am able to thinking deeply about these questions and helping me to see the big picture. So you can understand that there is no fight with emotion. Just changing my focus on answering those question which eventually lead me to better state.

As I mentioned above, that I wanted to be it easy but my experience is different. It is going to be hard in the initial stage just like a rocket when he go from the earth to moon or space his 80%+ (correct me if I am wrong but number is higher) fuel is spend on going to make rocket out of gravitational force and rest 20% spend on space and come back to earth.

I wanted to be relaxed, and happy when I am doing this in the initial stage but as I above mentioned that my experience is quite different or called completely opposite.

I do not know that this show is coming in India and if yes in what channel and I love to watch this show. But I have one question. How can be he always smile, super confident and always positive even when he is surrounded by problems. this attitude is what I want and for this purpose I did the Mental Diet. How can I develop this kind of attitude in me with ease. I am open to the suggestion because I know that here are many people who are smarter than me including you. So if you know any thing that can make me that kind of person with ease please let me know. I am more than happy to apply in my life.

thanks for your last piece of advice. It is very beautiful. Now I am trying to be more grateful and focus on more on what I have.

            Sanjay,

I get the 2 minute part, the version I have says 5 but it also says that it should be much less. The 5 minute mark is to allow for realizing that negative thinking is going on in the first place.

Just one thing, if you believe something will be hard, it will.
All the best for the rest of your diet.

First of all congratulations on even attempting this mental challenge, not many people actually take it up, even though they hear about it and may understand the benefits.

Pretty difficult thing to do in a country like Venezuela, when you have to use public transport everyday and you don't know if you are going to get robbed or killed...

Sanjay... it doesn't have to be this hard. Just relax and be happy. You're trying too hard.

My suggestion - Watch The Mentalist on TV and try and follow his attitude. He's all smiles, always positive, super confident and no matter how many problems crop up, he lies on his couch and just thinks of solutions. If none come to mind, he just sleeps.

Just be grateful and happy for what you have. Focus on being happy instead of trying to be not negative.

I wish you all the best.

Its like you have 2 forces inside and the one that's going to win is the one you feed the most. I say Keep On Keeping on. Nothing in this world is worth having is easy...

    just my 2 cents...

  • Positive thinking isn't enough. If you realise experts like Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy + more all talk about self-discipline and being able to motivate yourself.

    Hi Sanjay,

The first book I wrote was based around ten rights that I believe we all have, but don't often exercise. Many of my clients found it helpful:

As a member of the Human Race, you have:
    1. The Right to feel your feelings.
    2. The Right to express your feelings in a healthy manner.
    3. The Right to communicate your wants and needs.
    4. The Right to feel safe and in control of your life.
    5. The Right to require others to treat you well.
    6. The Right to treat others well.
    7. The Right to feel loved and appreciated.
    8. The Right to fail.
    9. The Right to succeed.
    10. The Right to be at peace.

Exercise and insist on these each day.
I commend you for taking on a Mental Health diet. If you find it helpful, you might try taking a Mental Health day each week!

    Take care,
    Jim
