the only secret to success

hello,

there are no real secrets to success but because so many people miss this one .. it is a secret by omission to 97 percent of people .

Measurement.

if you can measure daily ,weekly, monthly , yearly progress .. it is not a valid goal and just a dream .

no progress is still something you can measure and do something about.. but fuzzy stuff you have no way to measure ..

a plane is usually off course until the wheels hit the ground .. but there are lots of measurement telling the pilots they are getting closer to the destination ..

the same way if you drive anywhere .. you rarely can drive in a streight line.. but you know several ways to measure if you are getting closer .

if you are trying to get healthier.. or forget trying.. working to get healthier.. there are many things you can measure besides the least accurate weight .. ..improvments in fitness level..increase in the distance you can walk.. or jog .. or bike.. or weight you can life reps you can do..

do you have a system to measure progress in achieving a goal..

in the last 2 months or so i lost 15-20 of the 60 pounds i need to lose ..so i have 40 pound left to shed ..

so far though it was coupled with increase in lean muscle mass and long term changes in the way i eat .

but when i got back to the states the only thing my family sees is the belly from the 40 pounds i have left to shed..

which has been the problem with my family all my life .. no notice of progress .. just the problem .

it is like my finances.. i have no debt right now no fixxed expenses .. and a few thousand dollars in the bank.. but even though that is better than i have been in about 6 years when added to the improvments in my health and mental well being ...

again my family doesn't recognize these things ...

i tend not to want to deal with my family much anymore ...

Congrats on your progress! About 7.5 years ago I worked off 95lbs. Awesome feeling when you accomplish a goal like that. Keep up the hard work.

I totally agree with that, especially when it comes to Fitness goals.

Personally I'm measuring a lot of different parameters, such as: weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass percentage, various body parts (arms, legs, back...when I want to gain muscle), strength...and I also take regular photos of my body and compare them as time goes by.

Great looks like averyone here is measuring. The reason people do not succeed is the lack of motivation, thus confidence . and when you don't have self-confidence you can't do much in any area of your life

    Right on!!

You can't really win without measuring, without keeping track of everything.

It is a must that you know everything that is going on when you are working towards a goal.

    Great topic and tips!

    I wish you the best!

    Cheers!

To be honest, I'm still working on a complete "system" of productivity. Don't get me wrong, I do get the important things done, but I still haven't settled into a systematic way of mapping out, managing and measuring everything from the big picture to the nitty gritty day-to-day stuff.

However, I do have my short and long term goals broken down into chunks/milestones, my monthly must outcomes, weekly must outcomes and daily must outcomes.

Probably the most important thing I do to measure my progress in achieving a goal is my weekly review (taken from GTD). It really helps to take an hour or so and go over the past week to see what I hit or missed, to see where I am as far as achieving my various goals, to see what I can do better next week and to plan the next week accordingly.

Yes measurement is a key to achieve your goals but your title is misleading.

This is not a secret and not the only thing which is important.

For example, measurement is useless if you don't take action.

Sounds like a great heading for a squeeze page.

Reaching any goal is not simply "Idea, Plan, Action". These
are words that mean nothing. How do you come up with
the idea? What do you do to hone that idea into something
      that is viable and usable?

Then, what things are involved in creating your "Plan"?
Are others included in that "Plan"?

Action is something that is bantered about on this forum all of the time.
We all know what it is, but very few know how to implement "Action".
There are thousands of people who are taking "Action" and working
hard every day, but have little or nothing to show for it.

These words by themselves mean absolutely nothing! Each part
of the process requires thought and procedure to implement.
Also, action is not limited to the end of the process. Action must
be taken to complete each step involved in setting a goal.

I agree, but you need to give yourself checkpoints, meaning planning how to handle situations where you go astray like having a lazy day (not walking eating right etc)
So you can say "hey I had a bad day this week, but I was doing great all month before this and I will continue doing great as I've been doing all the right things untill now"
Planning for setbacks is the best way to get back on track if something goes wrong, it is like a vaccine against loosing faith/giving up

Setting things up properly, tracking one's progress, and
staying focused is NOT over complicating things, it is how
any successful venture is made. It also increases
the probability of following through with the task(s) needed
          to accomplish the project.

Again, that's not "IT"! You said it yourself, there is time and work involved. It does not
come down to Idea, Plan, and Action, it comes down to time and work. The I-P-A is
only a guide, like an outline.

["there is time and work involved"....this is the planning & the action...i.e PLAN ACTION]

The I-P-A is a guide. It's a success guide. You're looking at the IDEA PLAN ACTION and viewing it as just words. It's more than that, it's a foundation for success, it's a success principle that works. I guess it depends on your perception and definition of what IDEA PLAN ACTION means and what's involved when you see it. Success is a matter of IDEA PLAN ACTION, but yes there is more to it than that, of course there's more behind those words.

      well the problem is ..

say when it comes to weight loss or fitness..

people measure their calorie intake , their time spent jogging or what ever.. then they track progress with a scale ..

when it is the source of calories that matter.. the growth of lean muscle mass .. which could mean no weight loss for a time .

and in many cases people increase effort decrease calories .. and will lose weight over time but put their body in famine mode .. so when they cut the effort and go back to eating they will put weight on and may ad more .

action is important but the system of mesuring results should drive what actions are taken ..

you are into fitness i believe you probably understand the need to focus on building muscle mass to burn calories .

first we need to have a goal, infact goals ( weekly, monthly or half yearly) - I feel having a goal by itself is a issue with many. If you have a goal then measuring that makes sense. I tend to digress and not measure the progress when my goal isn't solid.

Once we have a SMART goal, then measurement is all ... like they say

" You don't value what you don't measure"

It is also underlying principle of six sigma, true to all spheres of life - health, career, relationships or contentment

Measurement certainly is important, and it can keep you on track for your goals. But if you don't take ACTION? Well you can measure all you like, but you can't just sit around and measure the same thing every day. I do agree, however, that once you TAKE action, you need to get out there and measure it. Keeps you moving in the right direction!

i don't know if we are in agreement ..

but it helps to measure where you are .. to even set goals .

setting goals and taking action are no secrets ..they appear in almost every self help book .

i just flew back from the other side of the planet two weeks ago .. on an 11 hour flight the most interting thing to look at is the screen that tell you how fast you are going and how much time is left to the destination .. lots of different mesurment even a screen with the flight path from where you took off to where you will land and a dotted line that gets solid as you cover that part .

in any case .. everything has changed for me in the past few weeks ..

A goal i though was a long term goal 5 or more years out .has pooped itself into the front of my mind wanting me to make it happen now.. and all measurments say it is near impossible,,

that is for another thread though.

    I disagree.

I've used to do the entire quantified life thing. Measured a lot of stuff from hours worked, income, health metrics, even personal stuff.

And it sucks all joy out of life. Why?

    Two reasons.

    1. It must be measured in an completely objective manner. Traffic may work. Other parts of life not.

    2. There is a story behind the numbers. Metrics alone can't say it.

A few months of my life I was obsessed with this. In the end, I let it go.

This is when it comes to life in general. When it comes to business, yes, metrics based decisions are relatively efficient.

      Measurable - feedback
      motivation
      self-confidence
      TAKING ACTION
      goal setting
      passion + diligence + confidence
      IDEA...PLAN...ACTION
      knowledge and hard work
      goal mindset
So many "only" secrets to success
Keep working hard and never give up
"do things the way other people don't do them....CHANGE THE STATUS QUO"

Hmm.. The only secret seems different things to different people. I am sure this list will grow as the discussion continues.

But taking action seems to be the one for most people. In fact all the others will, in one way or other, lead to action. Feedback comes after the action.

We know that we have to take action. But how many of us take action, even though we know full well that we have to take action to become successful. What is holding us back?

      My addition to the list:

      Belief System

Our belief system is our reality. If we have a failure belief system, we will be a failure and if we have a success belief system we will be successful.

      How to be successful?

First create success belief system then take action. When we create the success belief system every component listed above for success will be ours and taking action will be effortless and natural.

Wish you all smashing success and fantastic weekend.

You have to start with a dream before you ever turn it into a goal. These are the steps I use in setting and achieving goals.
    1. Determine what it is you want to achieve. Whether it is earning more money, losing weight, gaining weight, running longer, opening a business, taking a vacation, doesn't really matter; this is your dream. Write this down.
    2. Make it very specific. If it's more money you want to earn write down how much and in present tense. For example, I earn $100,000 annually by Jan 1st, 2015.
    3. Make a suitable action plan. Meaning, write down all the necessary actions you would have to take in order to make this physically possible.
    4. Place these action plans in the correct order.
    5. Having all the action plans, you can now determine how long you believe it will take you to complete this goal - make it challenging, but not too unrealistic. If you earn $50,000 annually, chances are you won't earn 1 million in the next year, you will see that you aren't getting any closer and probably quit.
    6. Set a date for each action plan accordingly.

And VIOLA, you are now much closer to your goal and if you follow out your plan, will definitely reach your goal.

    7. Most importantly, stay consistent, DO NOT QUIT, and work each day towards your goal.

Hope I helped you out on how to set and achieve goals.

    Fly high with your success,

    Roy Cohen

I think one of the biggest secrets to "success" is not giving up. If you take a drop of water and drip it on a rock continuously, after a while it's going to drill down on the rock. Same thing with most issues, focus and persist in it, and you'll succeed 9/10.

This is a new view on what it takes to be successful and it makes a lot of sense. The best way to do this would be to set yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals and then track your results.

I think you have to do more than just track your results.

I think you have to track the actions that you are taking.

You need to define the habits and the regular actions that you need to implement in order to get the results that you are committed to. And once you have defined these habits you need to monitor and track to see whether you are following through on the plan.

This way you get to see the results but also why its working or not working.

E.g. in an online marketing sense you can track the amount of blog views you are getting, the amount of subscribers you are generating and then the amount of sales you are making. And you can track the number of blog posts per week, the number of videos you have created and the number of emails that you have sent etc.

This gives you clarity and understanding

Measurement/tracking is perhaps THE greatest "secret to success" ... on a cost-adjusted basis. If you evaluate each method based on time, energy, and money input into using the method ... and compare that to the outcomes as a result ... you'll find that tracking has massive positive consequences on your life ... for an extremely low investment of your time, energy and money.

When you compare any given set of "secrets of success," you'll be hard-pressed to find one that offers a higher ratio of desired outcomes to costs.

Making this the most important one to focus on and master first. After all, if you can get the same result in 1/10th the time and for 1/50th the effort ... why muck around with the other options?
