How to avoid procrastination

Procrastination is an obvious form of avoidance.

Ask yourself: what is the one thing that you are delaying? Why are you avoiding it? Is it the task itself or something else?

Know the reason why you procrastinate doing a certain task & then "get over it". Motivate the procrastinator in you so you can accomplish the task.

Here are two possible ways to avoid procrastination:

1. Just Do It: Doing something takes less time than to procrastinate about it. And the longer you 'put it off', the harder it becomes to get it done. Make the decision to stop the procrastination & just do it.

2. Save the best (task) till last: Do the things you don't enjoy first. Get them out of the way so that you can move on to something better.

Let's use this thread to share some more ways to overcome the habit of procrastination.

Punish yourself if you procrastinate. No ice cream until you get a specific task done.

Also reward yourself. Have some ice cream when you reach a goal or you get something done.

Best cure for procrastionation : have a plan and follow it step by step, doing one thing at a time until the plan is done.

A warrior sent me a book about 2 years ago. He says - replace all your long to-do list with asap.

For me, sometimes to-do lists indulge my tendency to procrastinate. So instead of planning and re-planning, I just do my most important tasks asap.

The reason for procrastination is fear. Use that fear to not procrastinate.

Yup, I know it's one of my biggest downers. So now, I make my list of "to-do" while I'm having my breakfast .... if it's not on the list - then it's not important enough. When I get into my office - I tell myself "Just DO IT"......seems to work.

One of the best ways to fight the procrastination habit is to add a deadline.

We usually procrastinate because we believe there is no rush... Adding a deadline and pressure to a task will force you to do it.

I agree with you. When you have a deadline, you have a psychological rush to accomplish your tasks. Thus you invariably overcome your procrastination inertia and start doing the tasks in your 'to-do' list without delay.
