I Made More Money When...

I Looked at Internet Marketing Like A Game.

Seriously, why is it that everyone is always saying Internet Marketing is a business? Probably because it is, but you don't have to look at it like that way.

It's what you make of it.

All throughout school, I never put effort into anything that I wasn't interested in.

..."could do better"
..." needs a bomb under his chair to work" <<== actual quote from a school report!

But the thing is, I just didn't care, I'd rather be learning stuff I was interested in, or playing strategy games. It's just what happens when you grow up with the Internet I suppose.

But when I stumbled across Internet Marketing, I was hooked. I wanted to make so much money, and live like a king! All my mates where going to university, doing more "learning", but that wasn't for me. I really wish I could commit to doing things I didnt want to do, but deep down, I knew that when it came to it I wouldn't be able to get up to go to that lecture.

I knew that instead of revising for exams, I would be going "Diamond League" on League Of Legends.

I would waste 4 years of my life building up a debt I may never pay off.

So I started Internet Marketing Instead

Quickly, I built up a full time income, and was able to quit going to my agency job.

Remember though, I'm 21 years old. My living expenses equate to £260 a month rent, and another £300 to buy food, cigs, whatever else I need to be happy, which isn't much lol.

But when I went full time, I decided that this wasn't just to be a hobby that makes money any more. I took advice from the countless people who said to treat it like a business.

That was a mistake, because as soon as I started looking at it that way, it became a chore for me. Something I had to do to survive. I don't like having to do things at all.

I decided to look at it differently, like a game. I love gaming, (perhaps a little too much?) so it would be easier to get things done I thought.

I was correct.

When I started looking at it as a game, the money came my way so much more easily. I was constantly trying to "level" up, and the more wealth I accumulated, the happier I became.

Each decision I made, would be centred around what is going to make me the most money in the long run, and things were a lot easier that way. I found it easier to get work done, and I felt a much better sense of achievement, much like the feeling I get when I beat an opponent on an online game, and confirm that my strategy was better than his/her.

So what can you take away from this?

You don't have to be a gamer to make a positive change in the way you run your business. You just have to realise, that you are your own boss. You dont have to do what everyone else says, you can do it in a way that suits you.

Enjoy what you do, and everything becomes easy.

If you mean via email (after signup) then you should really put that in the "Thank You/Subscribed" page.

    Nice perspective on IM.

But i tend to disagree. You see, i also love gaming and sometimes i really don't feel like playing any video games. Prefer going out with friends.

Treating IM like a video game would also bring me to a situation where i don't want to play the "IM game" today. So i would not do it.

Treating IM like a business is all about understanding that you need to take action even if you are not in the mood.

    Cheers,

    Gamification.

Fitocracy.com built its entire business model around this.

I've used this approach too. However, when things get complicated (as having to manage other people, moving targets, changing circumstances), it is hard not to take things seriously.

However, I still use it from time to time.

(I didn't know how to put up a "partial quote" - sorry)

That's the whole key to what is being said here. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree, you very clearly state the fact: "You do it in a way that suits you".

That's the key! No one is exactly alike, no one thinks exactly alike but, too often, we expect everyone to do everything exactly alike.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I LOVE your gamer analogy. I'm not a gamer, but I am SUPER competitive. Like, I'm that kid that turned EVERYTHING into a competition. And IM feeds into that addiction for me. It's just another thing that I can get crazy competitive with, and just like dance, gymnastics and surfing, all things I was terrible at what I started, my competitive nature is helping me rise to the top. Thanks for this thought!

Back when Farmville came out on Facebook, I got hooked.

I loved calculating the amount of money it took to buy a type of seed, how long it would take to grow and how much money it would return.

I actually put all of the values on a spreadsheet that I would update every time I got access to new seed.

Every day a few times a day if I was around the computer I'd figure out when I'd be able to process my crop and start a new one. Based on the amount of time I had between visits to the game I'd figure out what would return the most profit.

        I loved it.

        Then I had this thought.

What if I spent that same time I was spending playing a game on the real thing.

What if I could find a way to create a real life version of that but in a business instead of a game.

I've been on that quest ever since. Trying to figure out a business I can start that will allow me to have that same feeling but with real money. I've only got so much time, what effort can I expend during that time that will return the most money.

I have found a few candidates so far such as adsense, but then you hear about people getting their accounts shut down and I think, what If I spent a year building up a bunch of content farms and all of a sudden I was cut off.

        So my quest continues.

I actually like the game perspective of business. Whenever I'm less tense about a topic, unlike with business where lots of things can be cut throat, I feel more willing to get stuff done and play around with huge ideas which then tend to manifest.

This is actually the way i treat my current businesses (i have more than 1 now) and that's not to say that i don't take things seriously. Rather taking on new challenges and becoming better within my industry, my game arena, now becomes fun and exciting.

I know this is a societal belief I've accepted, but business as I've learned it from others is far too much about money money money than actually helping others. Not everything is a zero sum game (if you don't get the customers, your competitor will) if you don't think it is.

Treating it as a game where i have fun and feel the euphoria of growing personally (in my case, spiritually) as my income grows is far more exciting and enticing rather than simply seeing it as a numbers and profit game.

When i detached I did make more money, and everything became a lot more fun.

But this is really just a different way to view the same thing. Others work a lot better under stress, either inwardly induced or otherwise, and that works for them so I can't say this perspective is better for them if it obviously isn't.

This can, however, be enormously fun to play around with if you're willing to experiment with things.

the virtue lies in the middle

you can not take too much like a game because im is a serious matter
and you must act, and act as a serious person with yourself and with clients
at the same time you can not create your own online work like someone you would owe a gun behind her back
You need to balance the two worlds as does a chef in the kitchen to create a good recipe
In fact, even the emotionalism is important as it is
the reasons for your self-esteem etc.

(I written in a hurry I hope that English is understandable)

That's an interesting perspective. I guess we all have different ways of doing stuffs.

I am thrilled by the results I achieve via this little medium of communication. It's only online that you can achieve so much from the corner of your room.

You have a real meat in your concept of treating IM as a game!!

Why just IM only? You can apply this analogy for any business or even job that you do.

Only when you start enjoying the things that you do, you get better at it. There are better results and of course greater profits!!

Great post! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

When It was very clear what I wanted to do with it.

P.S: IM is Channel/Platform that is established long back. The question is how good and quick we are to comprehend: The right niche, the right site, right words and marketing. Need to be good at all, miss one and you are in the get rich scheme mindset, else you can make it big. I HOPE !

I think that the reason I did so bad in school as a child is because it was presented to me as something that I HAD to do instead of something I GET to do. There is a big difference.

Your post really has me thinking that I need to lighten up and just have more fun in the process. Thanks for posting this! Doug

Same here. Your mindset dictates your success. If you look at making money online as a matter of desperation, money will run away from you.

Plus, when you're in that kind of state, your brain kinda goes into a fight or flight mode, which creates a narrow minded way of thinking.

You need to open your mind and come up with new ideas if you want to get ahead in this game.

Luke, hell of a great advice you're giving here man! Absolutely agreed! I can testify the same. No results when followed elaborated strategies of 100-page guides, and immediate results when followed my own liking, experience, intuition and simple strategy. This is the way to go.
