Feel the same. One of my potential clients is getting an app developed but doesn't have a mobile site. What happens when a user visits their website on a phone? It's going to look like crap and the app will sitting in iTunes.

I'm on the mobile web way more then playing with apps. Some great looking sites being displayed!

I'm rather liking the transparency look too and can achieve it with css quite easily.

Just a few questions in relation to it:

1. I know not all browsers support it, but what proportion of phones does that amount to?

2. What width of image is recommended for background image and how do you float it?

I know height will vary depending on the size of area you wish the background to cover, but is there a recommended width for image and do you set it to center and repeat?

3. What is your preferred opacity setting - 0.6, 0.8 or whatever?

I apologize to Will if this is not the correct thread for these type of questions.

BTW excellent thread. Thank you to Will for starting it and everyone who has contributed to it. I shall do the same myself in the next few days hopefully.

I second Young Samurai with the request that someone will post here clear instructions and exact css code for implementing this opacity trick with Will template.
I looked on the web but couldn't find the exact code and the exact place to insert it in Will's template.

Rather than take this thread a little off topic I have decided to create a tutorial on adding transparency and you can find it here:

But when i insert that image into the site the two colors are very slightly different!! which is a pain!

So just for those buttons im going to have to leave them at png. The site loads ok into all the emulators i know of and in the W3C mobileok checker im getting a score of 65% so its an improvement.
My work around for that is to take the image into one of your editor, create a background, use a color picker to change the color to match the background you want to use, then save as a gif. Still get that transparent look while going with gif or jpg.
Hope that helps!

Absolutely Love the first one, very elegant!
The second one is going to cause you problems because the text color is too dark against the black background, try for a little more contrast, so that mobile users aren't struggling to read the text.

There are absolutely great designs here. I have not gone thru all the posts but does any course provides details on how to build such elegant mobile sites?

I would be interested in buying that course or training. Thanks. If you want, you can pm me.

They are mostly built using one of three different mobile website programs well some are hand crafted but you can still get the same results.

My course you can see below, Wills php script or a CMS.

The second one! it is more eye catching. Writings can be slightly less readeable but the difference is really little. I love those sites with a background image! I just wonder if they are much slower to load. What's a size considered good for a background image?

You are obviously very pleased about something. Which is great.

Can you tell us what it is?

I trust my question doesn't sound cheeky.

Thanks for reply.

From memory that particular image is 600px wide to fill the screen using one of Will's fixed width templates. I'd also like to know if there is a recommended/optimum size (width).

Size, as in kbytes, has to be kept to minimum. Experiment in your image editor and try to achieve a happy balance between kbytes and viewing quality.

The mobile validators are really tight on the size of images which is a good indication of how Google will view it.

Is there just one graphic in each of those screens and then the last button is a menu option?

Thanks for your reply. I will play with Will's templates and some images!

Did you have the chance to show the demo to your client? What did he say? I'm curious even though totally sure he will be delighted! :p
By the way, do you manage his main site? One of the images in the slideshow reads that they are currently taking orders for xmas!

Recently found that website (not mine) crunchdesigners.com with stunning mobile designs using
octomobi.com The html 5 effect (slide, photo gallery...) is great so I bet we are in the age of stone with our html codes.

You can test on the mobile simulator, just click submit: http://simulator.pro/devmobileWP/

HTML5 is still HTML, it is just the newer version. As it stands not all browsers support it and that is why not everyone is using it as yet. No point having cool functions if they cannot be used by some people.

This is what I wanted to write too WillR ;-)
These are jQuery websites based on basic templates in the newest Dreamweaver CS5.5
I tried to play with it too and as WillR said, they are not good for all browsers.
Try on ordinary mobile and it won`t work. I might have done something wrong, but even didn`t behave good in Opera Mini. There was no point for me to continue with it at this point. Le`s wait for better time :-)

You're right, did not work in IE with my mobile simulator, thought it was a bug but you've got the answer: HTML5 does not work with all browser

You just kick me to the age of stone with my HTML5 positive post. LOL

Otherwise, works great with Google chrome.

Hi Di....

The images are sliced, diced and optimised for mobile with the layout, image resizing being hamdled by the CSS.

Here are a few of our prototypes, but I agree with you! I like Neil's because they each have a call to action! Each of his mobile sites is like a mini-ad or mini-squeeze page to capture visitor information!

So looks arnt everything.

As you can see in this graph the android market is really starting to kick off so better to build fluid width sites to reach all phone styles.

it's really interesting how the browser specific site problem has now crossed over into the mobile platform. Same problem.

The trick is to master what is called responsive design. Having a responsive design basically means that the site reconfigures itself in a logical way based on the type of browser it's being viewed.

It's a little more work during the design process, but HTML5 has a lot of tools to help with this. Good stuff.

I like the ones with coupons in them. They get your attention and are useful for the customer.

If any website has mobile versions, visitors can browse the site. The number of mobile net browser is increasing day by day. So you can crate a mobile website. The idea is very cool really. Hopefully it would be helpful for the users of all categories.
