This looks very interesting:

The online payments giant has showed off a series of mobile payments and shopping solutions that provide NFC-like features without the need for an NFC phone.

Online payments pioneer PayPal has demonstrated a suite of mobile payments and mobile shopping solutions that deliver NFC-like features without the need for an NFC-enabled mobile phone. The new solutions are designed to provide a way for PayPal to migrate from being an online-only business into mainstream payments immediately, without needing to wait for the widespread availability of NFC phones.

Very interesting indeed, here is an article with a little bit more detail on their strategy and how it came about. The power of acquisition to have your company make tremendous strides toward positioning ones self as the solution to buy into so to speak

Looks great but you still cannot just use a normal old paypal checkout solution on your phone. You have to get an express account and pay fees etc so I think they will loose big time for this.

There is already a heap of competition springing up in this area and if this competition get the phone market they just might sneak away more business as well.

So watch out for a lot of new players.

In the old days they would have been all over this but I think they may have lost their edge.

Still a great system.

It is a total new idea and it challenges the buyers' ethic as well. To certain countries, it is practical and very convenient. To some countries, I think it is not working as stolen cases may increase drastically.

Many countries cannot even get a PayPal account. I have encountered this problem several times over the years. I think PayPal is striving to stay in the game and get their apps into mobiles and tablets just like other mobile wallet systems by companies like google and squareup. But no matter what PayPal or any of the rest of them do, hackers and scammers will always try to find a way to game them.
