Mobile Simulator Questions.....Redirect & Stretch To Fit
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I'm using Quentin's phone simulator on a page on my Wordpress site (Thanks Quentin!) Rather than ask him these questions directly, I thought I'd post so others might benefit from answers. Here's my first question.....

Is there a way to promote the "stretch to fit" feature on the simulator? (other than viewing the various phones). I was thinking of having the phone laying horizontal, to go along with the vertical, to show how the site fits regardless of phone position.

Question #2

I have my Wordpress site set up with a redirect to mobile.mysite.com so a mobile user typing "mysite.com" into their phone gets redirected to the mobile version of my site. Well, back to the simulator I have on my site.... if I enter my main url (mysite.com) into the simulator, the main site shows up and does not fit! Is there a way to have the simulator redirect? I don't want my potential customers putting my site into the phone and seeing that I don't even have an "optimized" site... according to what they see. They don't know that my mobile site is mobile.mysite.com.

Anyone have answers?

1. You could spin the simulator on its side as you suggested. This would take a little bit of fiddling around with Quentin's script. I am sure he could probably help you with that.

2. You could record a quick video where you show the mobile website in a regular browser and you can then drag the browser window from big to small to show them how it automatically resizes to fit different screen widths. Alternatively you could tell them to do this themselves.

3. You could use a mobile emulator such as Mobilizer | Springbox as it allows you to view the site on 4 different phone sizes. You could save those screenshots and use those on your site to show how it fits all the popular phone models.

4. You could have an animated gif image created that shows you resizing a normal browser window and the mobile site resizing automatically.

I guess it really depends if you want the example to be specific to the customer or just using a generic mobile website. If you want it to be specific to the customer then you are probably best using option #1 as it will mean a lot less work for you in the longrun.

It's not really possible. The simulator you are using is just that. All it does is simulate the size of an iPhones screen - nothing more. In essence it is just an iframe with an image of an iPhone behind it. For this reason no redirect scripts are going to be triggered by this phone simulator.

If you want to use a simulator of this type then the only thing you can really do is enter a warning message above telling them that automatic redirects do not work in the simulator.

Thanks Will. I guess I could. along with that warning, write down the URL of my mobile site, and instruct folks to enter that URL to check out my mobile version.

Hey great ideas

I actually built the simulator because I needed to send my customers samples as I was building their site and hated sending them to third party sites.

I needed one I could get a fetch url from and hence it was born.

I sold it just to cover the time I put into it and was hoping for a few sales and never thought it would be so popular. Lucky Me.

As for the redirection it was not really built for that and you need an emulator to do that function. We mainly use it to send the actual url of the mobile site and that is where it works great.

It has a fetch script so you can send a customer a sample of their site without them having to type it in when they get there.

The side view is easy just by copying one of the pages and realigning the browser to fit.

Here is a sample

So, how do I send them samples? I tried entering a url as a test, sent it to another one of my email addresses, and checked that email on a different computer..... that url isn't loaded, it's the default page.

Is the fact that I have the simulator page on a WP site the problem?

Hi rlhurst

I use a customised version of Quentins fab script in conjunction with my main business wordpress website which works great..thanks Q ;-)

What I do is simply create a mockup for a client, load it into the simulator, uplaod that to my server and then send the link to that URL to my prospect in an email...works like a charm!

Uauslly we use this style of url

Code:
http://mobilesimulator.info/?url=http://keymobi.info/slider
If it is on a wordpress site then it will restrict you adding in the url because wordpress hates get url so you would have to adjust htaccess to allow.

That's what I'm trying to do. I have the page set up, but I guess Wordpress is the problem.....what adjustment to htaccess needs to be made?

I'm not sure exactly how Quentins simulator script works but if the problem is being caused by Wordpress, then can't you just install this script in a separate folder to your Wordpress one so the simulator is not effected by any of your Wordpress settings?

The reason is to send the url it uses a get function which Wordpress does not like.

I started to research at http://www.warriorforum.com/programm...ress-site.html

But still not found a reliable solution.

I am still looking

Thanks Quentin. Your code in post #7 will work for my purposes. When you get that Wordpress problem figured out, give me a shout!
