| I'm working on a book as we speak (with Don's permission). I've edited all his posts for good grammar, spelling, translating Don's unique style - it'll be called "The Midas Touch" It's in my "to do" basket." Only one problemo with putting my posts into a "book"; I do NOT "spill ALL the beans" in my posts! I always hold a "Key" ingredient or 2. So if anyone were to put my posts into a "book" the book buyers would NOT be getting the "whole enchilada". Don Alm....ben dere, done dat |

What good are your offerings if you leave out an essential ingredient? Just to brag and feed your ego? If you've "ben dere, done dat", then your posts should be complete and not leave the new and learning left holding the bag. That's neither helpful or professional.

The thing is this.. People have over 600.000 apps they can choose from. Every app hase to be lucky to get on the first two pages of an smartphone, otherwise it wil not be used much.. A good directory with some good marketing infront of people (tourists, visiters, etc.) can make a big difference. People need some 'guidance' to a good place and often this can be done trough advertisements or... A local directory

MOST travelers/tourists register...enter their room...set down their baggage....Go Potty...THEN....begin thinking about Where To Eat....AND...if they see Card that Says; "Scan This Code (or; type this URL) to find Where To Eat, Where To SHop, Find Local Attractions. What are MOST Traveler/Tourists gonna do? Also....as an UPsell....you can add a "Re-Direct Script" to the restaurant's WebSite.....for those people who DO...."Google their Mobile Device to find "Regular Websites" of restaurants, etc. I was in a similar situation when we went to Gatlinburg Tennessee, got to the room, and wondered where some of the good eating places were. So, maybe putting this information on a flyer and the ability for the new guest to scan different QR codes on the flyer for discounts to some of the local restaurants, attractions, etc. |

What about making it a web based app instead? Entice hotel guests to download the app by providing a flyer in their room. Put a QR code on the flyer as well as the actual URL for those that can't or don't know how to scan a QP code. Making the app web based allows you to add additional discounts from other businesses as well. If you are unsure if the hotel staff will actually put the flyers in the room, offer to print to hotel/motel a TV Channel Guide for free with the info about the app right on it. Besides putting local offers for restaurants and other businesses, also put all the hotel's info on there as a courtesy to the hotel. Some of the offers can also be printed on the TV Channel Guide as well for those that do not have a smart phone. Mention that for additional discount, please download this app. Thoughts? Thanks, Eva |

I came back from a vacation in Disneyland Anaheim and learned that most hotels and motels have lobby with wireless internet access so I was thinking about this thread for qrcodes, pizza..... There was many Flyers for dinner, attraction, tours... I ask the manager if they were interested about flyers with qrcodes..... what he told me is that many flyers have great responses like attraction and tours but restaurants or delivery have small to none response because tourist walk on the street and dine out as an impulse. They stop by a restaurant and dine. They rarely stay in room and order pizza or Chinese food even they have flyers in room with menu and phone number so why bother with a mobile site, internet, qrcodes he replied. He explain more over that most tourists stays for 2 or 3 days with family and spending money within a restaurant or buffet like all you can eat is not big deal. Some even stay at the downtown disney and have dinner at rainforest... |

In an area where people do a lot of walking AND pass tons of stores and restaurants in the process, then a mobile directory will surely not work as well. I'm thinking about branching out into this but I wouldn't go anywhere near a walking, tourist area. People book hotel rooms everywhere all day every day in just regular places. And when they have to get in their car to drive to find & get everything they want, they will appreciate a mobile directory more. Over my lifetime, I have traveled to tons of p;aces and didn't know where to go to get a good pizza, ice cream cone, etc. Think about business travelers who might need a host of services and want the best. Google can help you find "a" business, but a local mobile directory will guide you to the "best" in town. Many communities have lots of hidden gems that only the locals know about. Anything printed is not as good because people usually don't keep up with paper like that any longer. And I think it is very important that the businesses in the mobile directory be the best - and not just any shabby place down the street with equally shoddy food and service. The potential advertisers should know you will only accept the cream of the crop. The businesses will be more interested in being a part of the directory if they see that not just anyone can get listed.

Hey Don (or anyone else with insight): I'm putting your plan into action, but have a couple of questions if you don't mind. 1. Since the hotel has no skin in the game (i.e. they are not paying for the directory), how do you get them to follow through on promoting the mobile directory so that the restaurants and stores advertising are receiving traffic? I could see putting a 'table tent' in each room and then going back 2 months later and finding out they have all been thrown in the trash, which would not be good. 2. Speaking of 'table tents'...good idea? I was thinking of a clear, plastic stand with a printed insert which would have a short description of the mobile directory, QR code, URL, etc. The 'table tents' would go in each room and in other common areas (e.g. breakfast area, front desk, business center). 3. Have you considered offering 'multi-directory' discounts to the restaurants and stores? For example, $100/mo for a restaurant to be on one hotel's directory and $50 for each additional directory. I have 13 hotels in my town that I want to target. Let's say I get 5 of the 13. It would be easier to manage if I had the same steakhouse (seafood, Italian, etc.) on each directory vs. 5 different steakhouses, 1 on each directory. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers, HalfSwede |

Hi Enjoyed reading the tips on this thread, some good out of the box thinking. However, I think you are being very optimistic stating that the pizza owner will get an extra 10 orders per day from a 80 room motel, that would mean 1 in 8 or just over 12% of people staying in the motel will order pizza to their room every day. I am based in the UK so I appreciate that motels may be different but over here most small hotels wouldn't encourage customers to eat hot food in their room. |

Loved this idea when I first came across it. Would love feedback to anyone else who has actually tried to implement... Spent many hours putting together hotel agreement, restaurant agreement, and other marketing collateral. I have had conversations with about 10 hotels representing such chains as Courtyard, Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, and Sleep Inn. In every case, the General Manager said any kind of 'mobile directory' would have to be approved by either: a) their hotel management group, or b) the actual corporate HQ of the brand (e.g. Marriott). Also, it seemed that the GM really had no say on marketing decisions. Any suggestions? I actually think it would be easy to sell a listing to a restaurant if I could get a hotel to sign up first. Cheers, HalfSwede |

You have to go to a cheap motel that is independently owned and operated. He gets much better results with el cheapo motels than with upmarket ones. Also, if the person is not interested, just say "So long" and move on

With the popularity of smart phones w/GPS, and the advent of yelp, open table, google places, I'd think the mobile directory would be more valuable if it added reviews. I generally ignore adverts but pay more attention to personal recommendations and online reviews. This might even open the door to reputation mgt business and more, w/ the restaurants signed up. click to call is probably a good idea as well. A current menu offering is also important for any brochure/mobile site. Many of the chains are franchised and run by management groups who may own a few to dozens to hundreds. What is to stop you from asking the hotel manager who the appropriate contact is at corporate for a presentation? Geez. a couple calls and a presentation could get you 10,20,100 locations in a whack. If its a good idea and provides value for one independent, it'll surely provide value for a group of 20 locations. |

Guys, entire Warrior forum members. I think we can all work together in multiple cities with qr code placement in tourist areas. With one common website. I have been doing this very thing since 2011. I have been reading all of your post, and you all have touched on some successful ways but I feel that my company has put together the best and easiest way, I have messaged Midasman and he and I might can work together to get this going for everyone. We have traveled to trade shows and know hotel industry experts and how to get in the big name hotels and everything. We have put over 100k in developing this and global relationships. Our biggest weakness is finding foot soldiers, "sales people," to get this built up.

Nick, I had it all set up, but then Don got "modern" and got his own website where you could download all his reports, so I didn't follow through with it. I didn't want to rain on Don's parade. P.S. I also moved to warmer climate of the Gold Coast, so a lot of things have been put on the back burner. |

Look! This is Dec of 2013.....until the economy crashes and even the affluent and "sales" people are NOT traveling.....humans are STILL checking into hotels and motels. THESE people have 2 things in common; 1) They are HUNGRY 2) They have a MOBILE DEVICE So....they check in and.....they see (either on the Check-In Counter or on the desk in their room) a display that says; "SCAN HERE FOR LOCAL PLACES TO EAT!" Now....put yourself into the shoes of someone who is checking into a place to stay for the evening...AWAY FROM HOME! They are HUNGRY (most travelers don't bring food with them) and....they have (at least 95% these days) a MOBILE DEVICE. They see a display on the Front Counter (or in their Rooms) that says; "SCAN HERE FOR LOCAL PLACES TO EAT!" You kidding me? YOU don't think these people will whip out their Cell or other mobile thingee and either Snap a shot of the QR Code or type in the URL address of a "Directory" that can provide them with WHAT THEY WANT? Get real! Why others haven't worked on this is beyond me. I've been doingthis since Cell phones first came out. Hotels/Motels WANT to provide services to their guests. Restaurants WANT to be noticed by "Affluent Tourists"....looking for places to eat! You put all these factors together and they spell "M.O.N.E.Y""!!!! Gee whizzers people. IT'S OUT THERE! Ya just gotta GO GET IT! Don Alm...."Go-Getter" from way back |
