A question about Weebly mobile sites.

Weebly has an interesting looking option for creating and hosting websites that are created automatically by their in-house software.

What are the pros and cons of the Weebly platform for creating mobile websites?

(I hope this doesn't get moved to the Reviews section - I'm not looking for a review as much as an indication of how Weebly could be used in designing and selling website services to local businesses who are looking for a mobile optimized website.)

I know it has been discussed before. However, I'm interested in knowing how valuable the mobile features on a Weebly site would be to potential clients who are looking to create their own mobile websites, ie., would Weebly be easier, better, worse, etc., than some of the methods for creating mobile sites that are currently being discussed in this forum. This topic was not discussed in great depths in any threads I viewed in the past.

I haven't done anything with their mobile building software, but I hated their regular website building software. I thought, since I only know basic HTML and CSS, that using their system would be great.

I found it really awkward to use, I had to click tools like 5 times before the software registered it, and I also found out that what I see from the Weebly site was not how the website looked when I published it. I added a table to my page with some simple padding and such, looked great, but all the padding was removed after publishing.

Unless you have absolutely no HTML/CSS skills (and I mean none), I would stay away from Weebly.

Weebly is a third party platform, is that not correct?

If so then there is your answer right there. You should never rely on 3rd party service to be in control of your sites especially when you are working with paying clients.

Well that's my opinion anyway...

WILLR, Can you explain why its a bad idea to use a third party service for your clients mobile websites?

If it's a third party service then more often than not they are going to be hosting the files for you as well. We all know how many technology startups go out of business in their first year. If you have a whole bunch of paying customers and you are relying on someone else to provide that technology then you will always be at the mercy of them. If they go out of business you are screwed... for lack of a better word.

I would much rather have control of all my assets.

Weebly is great for building websites, but you should never use them as a host or DNS. Pesonally I use to build my sites with an Weebly Pro Account and export the files to my Hostgator account.

If you use Weebly as a host, you don't have full control, and Weebly can shut down your site when they want! (I have experienced this).

Fully agree. I've tried several and every single one has pro's AND con's, so it's always compromising.

I agree with WillR. Since it's third-party, you don't have total control. That's pretty risky especially if you're doing it for a client.
