Let the residual income begin :)

So today I met with the owner of a small diner and got him signed up for a mobile website ($19.95 per month). During the meeting he said that he also needs a new regular website and I'll be the one doing that once he gets his new menu finished ($75 per page to set up + $19.95 per month).

While talking I mentioned how I also own a video production company and he asked if we do TV commercials. I said, sure. He said he's been thinking about doing that and is glad to hear that I handle that too.

And if that's not enough, he said he was good friends with a pizza shop owner who has 4 locations. He said to call them and mention his name. He said they' probably want a mobile site as well.

So....so far I have two mobile sites sold (one already paid for 6 months ahead of time) and a full website soon. I'll be hitting the phones again on Monday to load up some more appointments.

My goal is to offer inexpensive mobile and full website setup fees but make the big bucks in the residual monthly hosting fees.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep posting my results here as they happen.

One other thing that happened this week was I went to talk to a coffee shop owner (trying to sell a mobile site). Although she couldn't afford it at this time, she did give me information about a local networking group she belongs to. They meet once a month and talk about marketing and things like that. She said they have a bunch of local businesses that go to these meetings. It sounds a lot less formal than the big groups like BNI...which for me is a good thing.

So I signed up for this month to see what it's all about. Maybe I can get hooked up with some of those businesses there

Nicely done! Start small and asking for referrals is always great even if someone decides not to use the service. Another option would be to ask for bartering! I am sure you could use a few cups of coffee and a danish or something each month to compensate for her being unable to afford it at this point.

I made a few cold calls today (didn't have a lot of time) and I spoke to a woman who owns a music/arts studio with her son.

A quick FYI about their site. The first page of their website is just a flash intro (which you can skip) to finally get to their main homepage. Now when you look at their site on your smartphone, you basically see nothing...if you have a non-flash playing phone.

So back to the phone call.

When I called them up, I first asked for the owner (who I found from Manta.com). The woman said he wasn't there and asked what I was calling about. I then said that I was looking for the person who was in charge of their website. Sure enough she said "me". I was thinking...great..that was easy enough.

I then told her that I have a company which creates mobile websites and when I went to theirs I couldn't see anything. She said "Funny you say that because my son and I were just talking about that and wondered how to fix it". I then explained the problem was because of the Flash file and also explained what a mobile site was and why it's important to have one.

She then asked "how much would one cost" and I said "how about free?".

She started laughing and said "Well now you really got my attention". I then explained that we'll build a mobile site up to 6 pages for free and it's just $19.95 per month for hosting and maintenance.

She said "well, can we host it where our current site is"? I said, sure, but then I'd have to charge her to build the site instead. I then asked who she uses for her hosting company. She says "I have no idea". I said "If you have a minute, I'll find out for you".

I then did a WhoIs search and found the hosting company. They're actually pretty cheap.

I then said "Well, if you let me host your main website and mobile website, I can do both for $24.95/mo which may save you some money. But let me do some research on your current hosting company first and I'll also make a mock up of a mobile site for you and I'll stop by this week to discuss everything".

I noticed that the conversation was getting too technical for a phone call and it started straying from my main goal which was the appointment.

She said her son is more of the technical guy and he'd have to be here. She then set up an appointment for this Wed. evening.

So my goal for the meeting is to obviously sell them the mobile site, but also convince them to have me build a new site without all the Flash stuff, include some good SEO, and host both of them as well.

For those just starting out cold calling, you never know how a conversation is going to go or which way it will turn. I went from trying to sell a mobile website to possibly (fingers crossed) selling the whole shibang.

So the best advice I can give you (besides just sitting your butt down and actually calling people) is to be as personable on the phone as you can. The more they talk and ask questions, the more interested they are. Turn your cold call into a personal conversation. Almost like you've known them for years.

Mike, sounds like you've hit the ground running! I think there is always an element of luck involved sometimes, but your right about having a more personable approach on the phone as opposed to the cold calling hard sell! This is especially true over here in the UK. People really don't like having people call them to sell them something, we are very ignorant and many people won't be nice about it and just hang up the phone.

I'm yet to start out my calling of businesses, but I'm gonna try to make the conversations and natural and friendly as possible and build that trust.

      Mike,

CONGRATS !!!! on doing what most don't, Taking Action.
Over time you will find that offline, online or any kind of
      marketing/busines is just like FOOTBALL!

The More Contact you Make, the More Money you Make!

Its always nice to see a fellow warrior getting out and getting
the ball rolling, and on things like hosting for example, those
little $25 to $50 bills add up fast after a year and 200 or 300
auto billings later. Guess what they don't cancel.

Here's hoping you get out and make a 100 contacts next week,
the whole shibang will come more than once.

So I had my meeting last night with the music school (see post about my cold call to them above). It wasn't a home run but it was at least a double.

But before I get started on how the meeting went, I want to mention something interesting.

There was one thing I discovered while I was there. I did know that the iPad cannot play Flash (at least the first version of iPad). But I didn't know that it doesn't play JAVA either. This music school's website uses java for it's menu links....so....anyone that visits their site with an iPad cannot even see the links to all the other pages which means they're stuck on the home page.

So keep that in mind when prospecting. If you see a business that uses a lot of Java code on their site, you can tell them that the millions of people with iPads cannot properly see their site...if at all.

        Ok. Back to the appointment.

I was supposed to meet both the mother and son (owners), but when I got there, just the son was there. The mother was running late. So I started talking to the son and asked if he wanted me to show him the mobile website before his mother got there. He said "sure".

I then proceeded to show him his website on my smart phone which looked terrible and took a long time to load. This is when he told me that his iPad doesn't do Java and neither do a lot of iPhones.

I then showed him the mock-up site I created for him and he loved it. He loved the "tap to call", the Google maps and the email form. He also didn't realize that I could put photos in the other pages that I created for his mock-up.

A few minutes later, mom shows up and I did the exact same thing. But this time, the son turned into my own personal salesman explaining how great this is and how it's exactly what they need. He also talked to his mother about their current site and how it can't be seen on iPads.

        So I'm thinking...this is a slam dunk.

Then we talked about pricing and how I'd create the mobile site for free and just charge for hosting and maintenance. Then the mom says...

"Well, we prepaid our current hosting company and it's not done until March 2012. And I really don't want to pay for your hosting fee and their hosting fee at the same time. But if you could host both sites, we'll definitely do that....we'd just have to wait until March".

        WHAT???? What just happened here???

So rather than have the whole thing blow up in my face and have to wait 5 months to do anything, I turned it around and gave them a discount on the monthly hosting for the mobile site until March, AND, convinced them to have me rebuild their current website (which will not be free) and host it as well in March.

        They liked that idea. Whew.

We also talked about other marketing ideas such as Youtube videos, Facebook Fanpages and QR Codes. They loved everything I was saying and want me to write up a proposal (with a price) for a marketing plan that would roll out all these ideas in phases.

They asked if I would work on commission with some of these ideas (they pay $100 per new student). I told them I'd get back to them on that but after thinking about it, it may be something I'd do if I came up with a "one shot" marketing project.

For instance, run some sort of QR Code campaign for a month and I'd get a commission for any new students that come in because of that campaign. That sort of thing.

Towards the end of the conversation, she mentioned that she belongs to a small networking group that meets twice a month and told me that I should come to one of the meetings. That's the second networking group invitation I've received in two weeks. I'll definitely hit both of them to see if there's some business I can drum up there.

After about two hours, I meeting ended and everybody was happy.

So to recap all of this....

I went into this meeting hoping to sell a mobile website (which I did). I will also be re-building their old website and create a full blown marketing plan to include such things as videos, facebook and QR codes.

And as the meeting ended, I think the three of us could also become good friends because while I was there, we hit it off very well.

I definitely want them to be long term clients.

The only WSOs that I purchased were from Quentin and Will. Just search their names and you'll find their WSOs in their signature lines. Both of these WSOs include mobile website scripts with training as well as some marketing ideas. And both of them are well worth their costs.....ehem...I mean investments.

However, WSOs only give you the tools and training. Nothing will work if you don't either pick up the phone and make some calls, or visit some businesses and introduction of yourself.

Hitting the pavement is an absolute must in the offline world.

Yes, I agree with your statement and I am ready to hit the streets (and the phone!). I would just like to find a mobile website I can sell, along with SEO, other Google related SEM, a web site I can offer, etc. I would like all of these together so that I am able to have my website offer all these options.

Can you let us know which mobile sites you are offering and any other services you provide and who you are partnering with?

Thanks for your inspiring story and good job keeping focused! My biggest problem is picking a horse to ride and staying with it! I keep coming back to mobile and online marketing services and need to have some good companies to partner with. Thanks! again!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you ask "which mobile sites you are offering." I'm basically offering to build mobile websites for businesses that don't have them.

Not that I actually "picked a horse", but I did choose mobile websites to get my foot in the door. Then once there the business owner and I can discuss other marketing strategies they could use to help increase their business.

And I don't have any partners. I do it all myself (for now).

OK, thank you! Since I do not know how to build a mobile site, I would have to partner with a company in order to resell their service. I have been able to locate some solid reseller programs out there for mobile websites, I just wanted to see if you were using anyone in particular. Thanks!

I would advise strongly against using a third party service to provide and host your mobile websites. If you are selling these sites to clients then you should have full control over the website and should not be relying on any third party service for that website to exist. If that service was to go bust further down the line you could have a real nightmare on your hands.

I have seen a lot of this lately with members who are coming across customers that are using things like Yahoo's free hosting or even website builders. They have very limited control over what they can actually do with their hosting and their websites. It's a real pain in the backside.

Hmmmmm. You just made me think of something when you mentioned churches.

What about selling an SMS service to a church and have them send out a weekly bible quote to those who sign up. I guess they would have to be short and sweet (kind of like the ones written on the marquees out in front of the churches).

              Hi Mike,
I use DudaMobile's platform, which works with WP, Joomla, Drupal, etc., just not with flash. My client has Joomla and when he updates his website, his mobilite automatically updates for him. So, what I am doing is helping him create a page on his website and a YouTube channel so when he blogs his Scripture of the day or adds another YouTube video, it's auto updates. the great thing I love about mobile technology is that he can both blog from his phone or upload YT videos. Stay well and hungry

Along the same vein, the church could record their sermons and send a link via SMS for those who want to watch again or those who missed it.
