Mobile/SMS Marketing - Identifying the problem our service is going to "Fix"

Im sitting here trying to develop a plan of attack and looking through cold calling methods i see we have to find the problem and use that to get an appointment.

What i want to know is for different industries what are the problems that mobile marketing / SMS marketing is going to fix.

Here are the basic starting niches for now :

1. Restaurants
2. Ice cream shops
3. Sports bars
4. Salons
5. Nail shop

I know there are more but what are the problems i can approach these clients with that i can fix?

TIA

Re: Mobile/SMS Marketing - Identifying the problem our service is going to "Fix"

You are not necessarily fixing a problem, you are offering them a way to get more business and more money. If you are trying to sell something like sms marketing the easiest way to get your foot in the door is to offer them a no risk trial of your service. Let them try it out for one month and if it does NOT bring them more business then they pay nothing. A business owner cannot lose out with a deal like this. Take away all the risk and they have no reason to be skeptical.

Re: Mobile/SMS Marketing - Identifying the problem our service is going to "Fix"

WOW that was huge....

What i was looking for was stuff that will get a client to want to setup a meeting with me over the phone. What I see people use is Telling a client a problem their industry has and that you can help fix it.

example.
“Hi, my name is XXXX and I’m hoping you can help me out for a moment?”

then ...

“I’m just calling to see if you’d be open to a different perspective (or avenue)…”
“I’m just calling to see if you’re open to some different ideas…”
“I’m just calling to see if you’re grappling with issues…”

so what im trying to do is add to the end of these types of scripts with a problem statement...

What statements would we use based on niches.... im just having troubles determining a statement to add to the end of this based on businesses above.

Feel free all to try this out... getting on the personal level with a client usually is the best way to get that appointment from what i researched and seems way more stress free to help with the cold calling fears also.

I just take in a QR Code and a sample mobile site and that pretty well is our sales pitch. We have done over 400 sites this year using that system.

As DEaFeYe points to, for your specific list, almost all of these businesses always want "younger" customers. These businesses always need to be filling their "customer funnel" with younger people. Note the distinction, I'm not saying "young" people, I'm saying younger people. A restaurant who caters to families or seniors doesn't want to attract 20-somethings, but they sure want to get more 30 & 40-somethings!

You can also focus the value of SMS on increasing the frequency of customers. SMS is awesome for bringing people back on a regular and more frequent basis.

I'm not a fan of 30-day free trials, for many reasons. If you want to give something free to get in the door, try doing a free "Campaign" (a specific contest, or promote a single event) rather than just give them a blanket 30 days. As you can see from comments in other threads, not all business's existing customers immediately "take to" SMS, sometimes its a struggle to build optin lists (if you're not doing the right things). If you just throw some table tents up for 30 days, your optins numbers could be weak in certain businesses. This could actually paint a negative impression for a potential client and your free trial works against you.

EatDrinkTextJay - You know what you are right.... makes total sense i think doing the Text to Win thing will be better and easier to manage. on a free 30-day type campaign... i will look at using this..

But first i must get clients with the cold calling.

so far i developed this which should work perfectly for a restaurant

I’m just calling to see if you’re open to some different ideas that might help to Increasing Customer Loyalty and Better Lead Generation.

opening statement just to get the prospects off of thinking im just here to sell something hitting them on the personal level.

but still trying to develop different ones.

Re: Mobile/SMS Marketing - Identifying the problem our service is going to "Fix"

I think I understand the jist of what your saying, instead of trying to get the client into a conversation, where they end up telling you their problems (and you have to think on your feet to supply a solution), you wanna throw it straight out there.

A good example for what you may be looking for, if I understand correctly, is in the car sales niche. (I know this isnt in your initial list)

The "problem" being that people/customers may come walking or driving past the car sales business after it has closed for the day. Generally, people are still able to take a look at the cars on the forecourt (unless it is fenced off), but with no salesperson around to question, or ask for a test drive they may be losing potential business.

You can "solve this problem" by offering your QR code and mobile website solution. Whereby each car has a unique QR code which takes the customer to a specific mobile webpage which has on all the details about the car and a possibility of options:

- A "call for out of hours" option, for those car dealers who dont mind gettting a call as they have their dinner.
- A "get a callback" option where the user enters their contact number for a call back the next day
- "Arrange a test drive" option where they enter a date and time that they will come to test drive the car.

Hope this is the kind of thing you meant?!

If we can get a good list of these "problems" unique to all the different niches in Quentin's list above, we'd all have so much ammunition for all of these industries when cold calling or walking into the business.

In my opinion if you cannot get them any worthwhile results in the first 30 days then either you (proverbial you) suck at what you are doing OR that business is not a great fit for SMS marketing. Either way they shouldn't be doing business with you after that 30 days is up.

The biggest problem any business owner faces is lack of customers/business. They don't care about any of the other stuff. The only reason a business owner is in business is to make money so they can enjoy the other finer things in life. That's it. More customers means more money means a better life.

All you need to be able to do is show them how you will bring them in more customers. You are not an sms marketer, you are not a mobile website designer, you are a business consultant and if someone was to ask you what exactly it is you do, you would say something like "I help businesses get more clients and more money."

Maybe if I was talking to a restaurant owner I would ask them what the slowest day of the week is. Would they not like to see more business on that day? By having an sms list of customers you can send out specials on those slow days to attract customers in and turn those slow days into profitable days.

Exactly the same thing applies for bars. The beginning of the week is always going to be a slow period. By having an sms list of customers you can send out a special on a Monday night attracting people in for a meal and drink.

However you decide to approach it let the business owner do the most of the talking. Ask a few generalized questions and if you hit the right nerve the business owner is going to tell you everything you need to know. More often than not they have several problems and they have no one to talk to them about so you are their outlet.

I don't think your opening post was confusing at all and in fact think it's spot on as you prepare to dive headlong into cold calling.

Re: the restaurant niche (the only one of your list that I work in) the problem you can solve with SMS is the slow night or 2 of the week that they don't have enough customers/revenue.

Something along the lines of, "I know Tuesdays nights can be kind of slow for restaurants, especially in this economy, but what if I could show you how to bring in more sales on any night of the week. Would you be interested in learning more?"

How much would you normally charge for a QR code, and mobile website solution for a typical customer?

JToneyUK 27th October 2011 05:36 AM

Re: Mobile/SMS Marketing - Identifying the problem our service is going to "Fix"

I think the answer to this would depend on many factors!

2 clients may want the exact same solution. A 5 or 6 page mobile site with info on their services, location & directions, tap to call features etc. Yet one client is a take away and the other is a barrister.

The building of both sites is not a big issue, infact with a template set up, each site should not take more than 2 hours to actually build.

But you need to think about what it is worth specific to the client!

If the take away owner gets 1 client specifically from the mobile site and they buy a pizza then the client is gonna make a few dollars only. They may get repeat business from this new customer etc but it is really a low end customer in terms of profitability.

Now compare that to if the barrister gained a new client solely from their mobile website and that one client is worth potentially thousands to the barrister.

So you might charge the take away owner a lower price than the barrister who you should really be throwing a ridiculous figure out to :D

Anyway thats just a simple example keeping in mind the simplicity of the website. You could start getting more complex where you add in more features. For example, the take away owner might want people to be able to order via the mobile website, which will obviously take much longer to implement and so you slap on a much higher fee.

However to answer your intial question I have seen people on WF charge usually between $200-$500 for the most basic of mobile websites. Others I have seen charge more, sometimes they've claimed over $1000 dollars, but the $200-$500 range has been a typical figure I have seen.
