Potential Client Request: Make my Logo "Punchier". Suggestions?
Share on:

Hey everyone,

I made a one page mobile site mockup for a potential client and here's what she said:

I checked out the mobile mock-up, and it's really cool! I'd like to send you a 'punchier' graphic for the top of the page though. What specs would I need to keep in mind (dimensions, dpi, color profile, etc)?
Any suggestions?

What I did was take a screen shot of her website and took the logo from there with a JPG, and I made the site using the scale to fit method from Quention's WSO.

Thanks for the help!

If you are using a stretch to fit type logo setup then I would probably recommend using an image dimension/width of 320 pixels. As long as the width is 320 pixels then the height can be whatever you want. In terms of dpi they need to understand that this is a mobile site so the file size of the graphic should be kept as small as possible. For this reason you are much better off having a simple high quality graphic than a busy graphic of low quality (the more detail in an image the harder it is to keep the file size small and still maintain quality).

Also let them know a mobile website graphic is best served as a jpeg or gif image - not a PNG.

The standard dpi for web graphics is around 72 dpi. Once they have sent you the graphic I would then use a tool like GifBot to optimize that graphic and get the file size down as small as possible, whilst still maintaining as much of the quality as you can.

So in short...

Resolution: 72 dpi
Format: JPEG or GIF
Width: 320 pixels

Assuming that you take logos for mobile sites the same way that I do, I would just write back with the dimensions, tell her that it should be a JPEG and that the colors can be whatever she chooses.

Once you have the logo you can just use the eye drop tool to get the color code so that its the same color as the rest of the site.

Have you ever tried asking your client for jpeg file or eps file of their logo? Or tracing the logo yourself and then making it into a safe-for-web jpeg file?

Because a logo with a better resolution will be nicer-looking than a screen captured one.

I have found 300 pixels wide the best. You really do not want to take up much real estate on the vertical.
