Short vs. Long Codes
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hey guys, been lurking for a while and finally decided to join!

Question: When it comes to SMS marketing, of course a short code would be ideal, but what do you think the benefits of long codes are?

I think having a local long code would be ideal. And it's only 3 more numbers, right?

Thoughts?

I included a few links to discussions about this, here in the warrior forum. I've been investigating this for nearly a month now and what I've gathered is that there are those who love long codes and those who love short codes. There seems to be no real clear answer - other than, if sending bulk messages of over 600 at a time then short code is it.

Hope the links below are helpful to you. I know how confusing it can be to pick and choose.

From articles that I’ve read, using long codes can use local area code but slower than short code on delivery. Long code is able to work on ALL carriers and also premium.

I have not done much with SMS. But recently bought a wordpress plugin for one of my offline sites. I am hoping to start using it.

So this thread will help me. I'll come back later to see if there more posts here.

Meanwhile I am going to read the threads provided.

Thanks for the information guys!

There is a time and place for both long codes and short codes. I would suggest having access to both so you don't have to decide either or...

Long Codes

- You get unlimited keywords, so you can track and segment things very easy without additional cost <--- this is the main benefit of Long Codes.

- Local number, if someone is fairly new to sending text messages, its much easier for them to figure out how to send a text message to what amounts to a regular phone number. It just like texting a friend!

Short Codes -

- Great for TV, Radio & In Stadium promotions, because they can handle large spikes in traffic where long codes would end up with a large amount of messages in queue which will cause long delays in getting responses out to the people participating in the promotion.

Thanks for info Chris. I'll be like checking out your webinars.

Do you also have info/stats around the benefits of SMS over email/tweeting etc?

Edit: also does your service work for Australia?
