I've just started a mobile marketing business concept, and part of that includes offering sms/txt marketing services to businesses to get people onto their database, with a view to being able to market to these people. The question, I have in my head, that i'm not sure of, is where does one store the data, ie when a prospect responds to a 'txt BLABLA to 12345 for a FREE ICE;CREAM' where does that text go, and how does the sending mobile number get stored into a database? Also, how accessible is that database usually? and by whom? and who usually stores/hosts it? If any Warriors can answer these for me, that would be awesome Thanks Warren |

The back end service you use to provide your SMS service would keep the database. This could be companies like lime or txt180 or even a custom program. I'd say figure out your back end first. Than you can figure out your margins and your pricing to offer. |

Thanks Lordauric How do you calculate your margins on sms marketing when you're pricing it on behalf of a client, is it just a standard markup, or is it normally just a set $cost per text (which includes your markup)? Thanks Warren |

Warren, it maybe different from service to service, and from country to country. I'm in the UK and the service I plan to use for any clients I can get on board operate by you buying text credits. 1 cred = 1 text and for the first XXXX you pay for example 3.2pence per text. The higher the amount you order upfront in bulk the lower the per text cost. One you have those credited to you, you need to decide on how you charge your clients. You coud charge them per text also and make a small proft per text you send out. Or you could charge them a set monthly fee which allows them to send upto XXXX amount per month, obviously you have to work out the pricing so you make a worthwhile income from each client. It might depend on the nature of the business as well as to which service would benefit them most. |

The data is stored on the platform that you are using. There are several different reseller platforms that you can buy. Each reseller platform is different. Once you sign up for a reseller platform you can buy texts in bulk and choose a keyword. As the customers/prospects text the "keyword" to the shortcode you are given then those numbers are stored in the backend database. The wholesale cost of the texts can be as low as .03 which you can turnaround and sell for .12-.15 cents or more. Keyword are bought at wholesale prices and of around $8 and you can charge $20/mo to your local businesses. The platform that you choose does all the hosting thus the monthly fee to them. Some platforms allow local businesses to log in the backend via the same interface but they can only see information related to their own business. |

The information is stored in the platform that you use. Think of it like your email, where you log in and can see all the messages that have come in, the messages that have gone out and the people that you have interacted with. the one thing to remember is that you can not share lists between companies. When someone opts in to a campaign, they are opting in to a specific campaign from a specific company. Just because someone opts in to Company A, does not mean that Company A can sell the "Opt in" to Company B. If Company B sends a message to that list... It's Spam! Hope that helped a little... |

Do these platforms only work in specific countries in which they are? I mean, I'm based in New Zealand, so would a USA platform work for me, or do I need to find one that's specific to NZ?

Is there anywhere you can recommend that can show you how to setup your own platform?

You'll need a platform that works in your country. And from there you have to figure out based on the platform's pricing what you will charge the customer. |

One thing that you want to make sure of is that the text message marketing company that you work with allows you to export your database at any time. Without this option, the company kind of has the golden handcuffs on you to stay if you find a better solution elsewhere or wish to save the database for a later promotion. Short codes are country specific. A good source of information for your research is the Text Message Blog. |
