Taking action tomorrow morning! But there is a thing I need to ask...

Hello all,

As the title says it, I will finally go out and start promoting my services after reading and reading and reading almost all the stuff here on the most AWESOME forum, WF.

I am planning to visit different businesses that are already spending money on advertising and have a regular website, so I can offer them a mobile website.
Basically, what I want to do is, create a demo site for the place that I plan to visit and then go there, meet the owner(yes I am finally brave enough to go and meet face to face with potential clients ) and show them what I've got.

Though, there is one problem here. I don't own a smartphone but I do have the asus transformer tablet. However, when browsing a mobile site on a tablet, honestly, its much better viewing the FULL site than a mobile version of it.
So, I am wondering, what would be the best way to show my potential clients, their demo mobile site?

Also, I have a couple more questions that I will ask throughout this thread which I will update with reports on every achievement of mine and stuff that I am learning.

Thanks for reading, and please suggest me how do I go about showing them the demo site, when I dont have a smartphone.

There's really no substitute for having a smart phone. As you suggest, showing them on a tablet won't have the same desired effect as using an actual smartphone. On your tablet you could use an iphone simulator site such as iphonetester.com but once again, if you are visiting them in person you are going to have the best results with an actual smartphone since you are able to re-enact exactly what their customer see's.

You might want to borrow one from a friend the first couple of times and then when you make your first sale, invest in a cheap smartphone on eBay. You can pick up a decent one for $150 or so and then you just get a really cheap pre-paid data pack.

I think it's a little hard to sell people on the idea of a mobile website and that you are some type of mobile expert when you don't even have a smartphone yourself - it might look a little weird!

Thanks WillR. That's what I thought too, but I am just tired of not taking action so I wanted to start ASAP.

But, I will definitely invest in a smartphone this week and in the mean time I will filter some leads and create the demo sites for them

Thanks again!

Also, what is actually better, ie what converts better between visiting in person or direct mailing?
I understand that it varies by the ability to sell or how quality the promotion/mailing campaign is, but is there like a general opinion on what works best of the two?

I know there have been different threads about this too but one more comparison won't hurt

thanks!

Congrats on taking action agonce!

Do the mobile sites you're creating for these businesses only work on smartphones? Or do they also work on feature phones?

Because there are still PLENTY of feature phones out there.

So...I'm thinking of something like this:

1) show the business owner their website on the tablet. Looks great.

2) show them the site on your non-smart cell phone. Probably un-viewable.

3) show them the mobile version on your phone, and then on the tablet to simulate a smartphone. Have them imagine how it would look on a smartphone. Show that the size adjusts for each phone individually. Looks great.

Sell.

In any case, I wouldn't let this fear hold you back. I'll bet half those business owners have smartphones. Have them pull up their own website on their phones - and have an easy short link ready so they can pull up their brand new mobile site.

And even if they don't own a cell phone...and neither do you...just bring a few stats with you to show them just how many people are using phones to look for them, and how much they get turned off when the site won't display properly on their phones.

Here's an article for reference:
DudaMobile Teams Up with Google to Help Businesses Go Mobile « DudaMobile Blog

I'm specifically talking about the part that goes:

Research shows that customers are more likely to search for information about a company first on their mobile devices or smartphones and get turned off if that website isn't optimized for mobile.
Good luck. Make it happen!

thanks lianecarmi for the input!

You just gave me an idea to do the following as soon as I get the smartphone:
1) Show them the full website on the tablet(which looks very similar to what a visitor would see when browsing through a PC)
2)again, do what you suggested, show them the site on my smartphone(or theirs if they have one)
and 3) Show them my demo which will probably look awesome compared to the full website being browsed on a phone

And yeah, I already prepared a presentation with some stats(which I fear will bore them somehow ) and of course listen to the owner what they want and suggest them how can I help (besides the mobile site of course ).

Thank you !

If you can get the business owner in person it is always going to outperform all other methods. Nothing beats being able to show them exactly what you are talking about. The great thing about face to face is it's much harder for them not to give you a few minutes to explain yourself.
