Using Mobile Websites as the way in?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hey guys whats your opinion of using Mobile Websites as the way to get that appointment / trust.
Giving them a free design.
Of course not a full 5page site i'm thinking maybe just do a 1 page with a logo / map /call now/ few text.
Just want to use it just to get in the door to be their trusty mobile consultant and introduce them to new services.

I seen some people are doing coupons and all that but making that website for that now and getting it ranked seems like it can slow my pace down on making some money (ill look into that later).

What do you guys think about this method?

You'll get opinions both ways... don't give them away, and give them away. All I can say is that giving a site away has drawn more business from referrals (make sure your website, or contact link is at the bottom of the page). It was worth it to me, as I was just starting out and nervous about approaching businesses. I made up a site for a pizza owner, went into the place, ordered from the menu ON MY PHONE! He was impressed, so it was an easy giveaway. Then I made up a flyer with the qr code to place on his counter...a good way to advertise your service.

Best thing to do is buy one of the WSO's out there saves so much damn time trying to figure everything yourself.

When doing the promo do you give them a full website?
Did you charge them Hosting or just give it over to them free?

How did you handle this whole thing?

That particular one, I did a home page with tap-to-call, get directions, menu link, then a page with their lunch/dinner menu.... nothing too extensive, but enough to fulfill their needs. I did not charge anything. I'm hosting it on a subdomain. If menu prices change, I'll just update them ( I told the owner to let me know). I'm not doing totally free anymore, but that was a good way for me to ease into the process.

I have purchased many WSOs on this and they all have been pretty good. There are so many variables, that I think you just have to dive in, try different things, and more or less develop what works best for you.

There are differing opinions on this for sure. I never give away anything. I used to do that in another service when I was younger and all it did was cheapen me. Whenever you run a business you must keep up your image or I find no one takes you serious. Sure i probably don't get the volume in my marketing company that other warriors get, but then again, I don't work as hard because I get much more $$ per client. Those who see value in my service gladly pay me my premium pricing and with contract. So, IMHO you should not give away anything free. I know it's frightening to get out there and sell services, but the most important thing: you are selling yourself, and if you give that away (time) then that makes you kind of cheap in others eyes. Have faith in your value and you will not be afraid to sell.
Another point, in all my years of selling services, myself, what have you, I have found that people buy on personality. If they like you, then no matter what, they will pay you what you ask (within reason). If they don't like you, then they will not buy, or more often than not, they WILL try to take advantage of you through pricing.

I promise you if you believe in the value of yourself, and your USP of service, that no matter what, if they like you, they will buy at your price, and if they don't then at least they will respect you.

Be well,

Lane

Just an added 2 cents... It isn't always easy to give away something for free! LOL People these days are so paranoid that they see a catch behind everything. But I guess if you are trying to upsell them then they have reason to be a little leery. ;-) But even if you go into a business with the sole purpose of giving away a free service to get referrals, alot of people will turn you down on that offer. Funny how people are...

It seems to me if you're just getting started it wouldn't hurt to give a few simple mobile web sites away to sort out your engagement and deployment process. However, of course charge for hosting the mobile web site via a PayPal subscription or something like that. So you give away a simple web site, you now have a recurring revenue stream from your hosting services. It's also my experience that once you get your foot in the door and you do an excellent job for the client, they'll typically be back for more website or online marketing work where you can then charge your normal rate.

I think that if you are going to be giving these away for free it should be to to businesses that can help you get more business.

Think about businesses to business companies. Businesses that provide services to other business would be beneficial to do this.

I saw a post by Don Alm talking about setting up a mobile website for your local chamber of commerce and having business cards with qr codes printed for all of the chamber employees. That could generate a lot of business. And also if you could get the chamber to let you build a site for them, you could ask them to send out a free blast to there list of businesses about your service as well as asking them to let everyone know about you.

Also print shops, local directories, and other services.

Think about it, if you have a local print shop that is marketing to local businesses and you set up a jv opportunity with them to set up a free mobile website and in return ask for referrals or see if the want to offer it to there existing customers to make a profit you can get new business.

Also look at specific online directories and offer them a mobile version of there directory and offer mobile sites to all the businesses in there directory.

I personally wouldn't offer a free site to just anyone, but to businesses who can offer me more business in return for a free service.
