I'm just playing around with some templates and honing my skills by making a few mobile sites but I have a question... what is the optimal size (kb) for a mobile site? I don't want to add too many images/graphics if its gonna take eons to load, but on the other hand I do want it to look and feel as good as possible. I may even post some of my creations for some constructive critique. Thanks |

W3C mobileOK Checker You'll find that anything over 20k fails..... I personally don't worry about staying under the 20k limit. I've had 60+k validate in the 90's. I wouldn't go crazy and load it up though. That checker only checks your homepage, so if you're concerned with their result, keep your homepage simple and design your other pages accordingly. Bottom line is..... how long will a customer have to wait for the page to load. You don't want it too long or they're gone.. I know I would be. | |

Yes, you'll find the mobile web standards recommend a page size of only 20kb. Although you won't be able to achieve this every time, it is something you should always strive for as it will mean you are more conservative in your design. The point is, don't have mobile pages loaded up with images that push it over 100kb. Obviously the exception to the rule are pages like image galleries but these are ok because someone clicking on that page knows they are going to be looking at images and things will be slower. Just try and keep everything as streamline as possible. |

I Agree with the other guys too - I will always try to validate to as close as to 100% as I can possibly get. Thing is though i feel there is a difference in understanding why your site is not validating instead of being ignorant or blinkered to the fact - it's important to me at least that you should know why your site doesn't validate and what you can do to remedy it, doing so personally I believe will make you a better developer, will give you a much better understanding of what your offering, and also enable you to provide your content to a much broader range of visitors and offer them a great user experience. Not to mention that following these standards will make you a better developer. You have to understand what the checker is telling you is wrong in order to fix it.
