Unbelievable

I was just at the Grocery store and saw a shelf talker in the ice cream section,, it was a major national ice cream manufacturer,, there was a QR Code attached and so I scanned it.

It went to their desktop site.... I would think that a major brand would have sense enough to 1.Have it go to a mobile site. 2. Mine some marketing data from the qr code and 3. fire their IT guy's for screwing up like that.

This tells me that if the big boy's don't have a clue then most everyone else does not either,, all I can see now is $$$ signs... Makes for good dreams

I haven't checked for a while but i know there are number of major retail outlets using QR codes that don't send you to mobile optimized pages!

Right now there is an absolute horrendous mobile user experience that is being marketed on some Chewing Gum packaging.

People already put down QR codes for having to download a QR code reader app but wait till they find out you need another app installed to view MS Tags! lol

Naturally this mobile marketing campaign i am talking about used MS Tags.... i then painstakingly completed the scan and followed the directions until i got to the point where i had to download an MP4 to my actual phone!!!

It beggars believe the amount of money or testing that was paid to develop this awful mobile experience!

I often wonder what must be going through (a) the developers mind to think its ok to do that... and (b) what must he be saying to the final decision maker for them to say cool! Lets proceed with that!!!

And like the OP said to deploy a QR code campaign that goes direct to the mobile site without any type of tracking is crazy! We use our own service that tracks the time, geo-location, type of phone, the pages they visit on the mobile site and conversion goals but to name a few things on each QR code scan a user makes. Without this type of info it makes it much harder to see how well your campaigns are performing.

At least i can look at what these guys are doing and use it as a good lesson on how NOT to deploy a mobile marketing campaign - i hope other people see that too!

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

Its a major lesson but what happens is that it puts a sour taste in the consumers mouth

Sadly yep that is the case!

Doesn't help that you have a lot of overnight mobile guru/experts directing these people - that's why you see these poorly marketed campaigns. It's like the blind leading the blind - these so called experts are jumping on the bandwagon just to make some quick $$$ without the slightest concern for end user experience or understanding thoroughly the in's and out of mobile marketing!

Hilarious. But sad.

A QR code should not only take you to a mobile site, but a QR code like that should take you to a mobile site with a discount or two-for-one coupon to encourage you to buy!

Exactly! We encourage all our clients to use call to action to get over the what's in it to me scenario! I wish people deploying this stuff had to take a quick 101 session before they can even generate a qr code! lol

I picked up an entry for a contest put on by Monster Energy Drink, I came home and scanned the code and it took me to a non-mobile friendly website. It had a form to fill out that I would not have liked to fill out on my desktop, much less my phone! I emailed them and asked, "What is the point?" They said they'd forward the email on to their marketing company.

The kicker was this was for a Winter- X-games event with a ton of x-game celebrities, why not have a YouTube video of the x-gamer with a simple name/email to fill out?

I am hoping to hear from their marketing department on a consulting gig, but nothing yet.

Its not the users that need to be educated on how to use QR codes. Sounds like it's some of these marketers that need training.

Totally agree with everyone here. And it's things like this which make users (potential clients) think that a lot of the things we're selling are just fads, or quirky - as opposed to useful.

I once scanned a qr code printed on a flyer promoting real estate agent services. Same thing. It went to their non-mobile site. :p
