Weddings Go Mobile
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Here is an interesting niche that I had not thought of.

We just got a request to create a mobile wedding invitation. They say all their guests have smartphones but we can also use a simulator for those that dont.

They want us to send an sms to all guests.

Once the wedding is over they want to add a thankyou and some photos and a youtube video.

Now this would have to be something that could take off.

What do you think?

Q

Quentin, you're a master mobile marketer. Great found.
Mobile Wedding is a huge niche.
I see in my area that some photographers do only wedding events and they do for a living.

What's great too like lrhurst said QRcode can be a great way to send people to the mobile site. I know that most young people have qrcode readers and smartphones, so this is definitively going to work, standard website is outdated here.

Quentin,

A nice idea!

With the divorce rate so high nowadays they could also get them on to an sms list so they can inform the guests of future weddings!

Seriously though, a nice 'out of the box' idea. I think this could be a great idea for invitations in general, whether it be a wedding, birthday, christmas party, whatever!

With the wedding idea you could also have a link to their bridal registry so people can easily then go and shop for the wedding gift.

WOWZERS! This is insane Quentin!

I am actually currently working on this very idea with my brother who is a photographer!

Using your wonderful script I have been setting up templates to offer his customers, and yes, this is a real slick niche. Make that money.

I will update our success in the near future.

Great foot in the door strategy for wedding venues / party venues / wedding photographers / wedding shops, offer a free mobile page for their next event.

Perhaps realtors / estate agents could offer clients that have recently moved home a mobile page with details of their new address, directions etc. This could be free promotion for the estate agents if the mobile page is branded.

Hi Quentin,

What a great idea and a variation could be used for different types of events.

Prehaprs we could JV with local wedding photograpers and offer this service through them as an upsell on their photo package?

Very interesting....thanks for sharing.

This is a great idea!

and with some weddings being so boring, people would appreciate having something to do on their mobile devices : )

But seriously, I could see how you could package this up and sell through wedding venues and planners.

Nice! Another set up might be putting a qr code on the wedding invitations that lead to a video of the couple personally announcing and inviting their guests to the wedding
If you are going to do the QR code, the custom QR code here is a must instead of the boring black and white one.. Here is how to create one easily:

Quentin,

I think that's a great idea. Funny how its right under our collective noses yet it takes an "outsider" to come up with the idea.

All great ideas. Another possibility is instead of going to photographers is to go to wedding planners.

You guys have got my creative juices flowing now.

It's a great idea. I was wondering how the costs of printing the high quality invitation cards could be reduced. However, with the introduction of smartphones I think many things including invitation will be taking place smartly!

Quentin,

Your on a profitable track! There are also markets for birthday parties, bar mitzahs, debutante events and more. Mobile is positioning to be bigger than the advent of personal computers.

Best of luck to you!

Funny you should mention this Quentin...I was just looking into this very thing the other day -good call

I was also thinking the mobile site could also incorporate a registry site / stores and pre-loaded QR links or apps from any brick and mortar they might want to incorporate...
once the wedding planner is set up...a few updates keeps everyone informed...

With all the businesses involved in the production of a large wedding, and cost involved, there are a lot of ways to go...weddings are huge revenue streams...

Get hooked up with a high profile planner, and you would be BZ

Also think about the Honeymoon planning...
and the eventual baby shower?
and who knows?

Re: Weddings Go Mobile

I've read and many comes with other events like baby shower, birthday..
For me, these are not worth to target because spending on a mobile site will not be a priority, it's not like wedding where they have to show their friends something special and memorable, also they have a big budget.

I'm going to launch a national site soon and I figure out that this is no game but serious business you can't make a single error or your reputation and business can stall.

Some issues like scripts, forms, hosting... should work 100% if not you can be in a really bad situation the D day. That's why I'm planning to have a dedicated server and all will be hosted there.

So again for people who get in this business you must have a serious background.

When you have a company website, if something happens like an error in text or script... you can adjust it in time but for a wedding, you can't, it's like a live public performance.

Good thoughts but I wouldn't think it would be THAT critical. It's not like thousand of users are going to be overloading the servers. And I don't think there's much interaction that will be happening as the wedding/event is happening.

Plus, not EVERYONE will have a smartphone to interact, so there will have to be concessions for non-smartphone users.

Just my 2 cents...

I did not go into specifics...but for me, I was thinking more of a "rental" page or similar for a smaller day site like baby showers, etc -

you are right in that it would not be as big a moneymaker...I was thinking in the long term service relationship working such as a family photographer might have...

Sort of like shutterfly with a local business registry? - only mobile

This is an amazing post, has my head spinning with ideas.

How would you even price something like this?

Say you added a QR code to a wedding invitation, shot a 30-60 sec video, uploaded the video to youtube or vimeo. How much could you charge?

Same things goes for Thank you for attending our wedding video, etc....

I disagree with you here. It's not thousand maybe but big weddings (regular ones) have like 100-300 invitations and that's why they have a budget for it.
Now let say that during the dinner speech the bride says don't forget to see our photos and videos on your mobile just scan the QR code on the invitation card or a paper left on the table or log to the site written on the card for non mobile users. What happens if 100 out of 300 scans at the same time just to see it, you are on a hosting shared account with some videos and pictures (light of course), who knows a message display " Too many silmutaneous connection to ....or...exceed the quota of the server" YOU WILL GET POTATOES ON YOUR FACE!

Also someone already found a solution about non mobile users with a mobile simulator (read above post)

Re: Weddings Go Mobile
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I just noticed this from Quentin and I thought I'd toss in my 2cents;

Some years ago I was talking to a "Wedding Photog" friend and he was asking, "I'm the New Guy in this market. How do I break into the "Wedding Photog" market here?

My suggestion was; "Offer Something NONE of your competitors are offering!"

And....his response was, "Yeah! Like what?"

So....as I usually do....I "put myself into the "body" of the Prime Prospects...... a "Bride's Family" (who usually pay for the Photog); So....the "Father of the Bride" (or the Bride and Groom themselves) go to a few Wedding Photogs and
1) ask what they can do
and
2) what they charge

Well....after talking to 3 or 4 Wedding Photogs.....and the Photogs show samples of what they've done, etc......they discover the "Talent" and Prices are pretty much similar for the service offered (which is a "Package" of X Photos and X #of Albums)

So....I asked my Photog buddy; "WHAT can YOU offer that the others don't?" He didn't know so....I provided a suggestion;

What if YOU could offer "INSTANT WEDDING PHOTOS"? Instead of waiting weeks for Photos of the Wedding and Reception....YOU could offer Instant Photos by having an assistant take "Digital Candids" that would be UpLoaded to a Special Web Page that wedding guests (especially those who could NOT attend the wedding or reception) could go up to the WebPage and SEE....Wedding Photos....the EVENING OF THE WEDDING!

Would THIS SERVICE be Unique and Different from what the other wedding photogs were offering? You betcha! His business TOOK OFF because he could provide a service his competitors were not.

So....by the same token...fast forward to 2011 with "Mobile" going bananas....what if YOU were to offer "INSTANT MOBILE PHOTOS" by providing a QR Code (and the Mobile URL) ....ON THE INVITATIONS......
that would BRING UP the Wedding Photos on a Moble Website.... the evening of the wedding?

Granted....some of the relatives of the Wedding Couple are elderly and may not have access to Mobile Devices BUT....MOST of the friends and relatives DO....have some kind of Mobile Device that would allow them to SEE...PHOTOS....of the Wedding and Reception!....the EVENING of the wedding!

So....YOUR Target Market to provide "Instant Wedding Photos" is;

Wedding Photogs
Catering Cos
Venues

Along these lines....to give you an idea of the "Power" of offering something that competitors AREN'T....I gave this idea to a guy who owns a beautiful Wedding Venue; A Gazebo in a beautifu Garden with a Pool and Waterfall and Reception Hall.

And....because there are 3 other competing Venues....I told him I could set up a "Mobile Website" so members and guests of the Wedding Party could .....crank up their Mobile Device THE EVENING OF THE WEDDING and SEE PHOTOS.....RIGHT THERE....IN THEIR HAND-HELD "MOBILE THINGEE"!

The guy came "UN-Glued" and almost knocked me over....with excitement as he said; "THAT'S IT! YOU NAILED IT! I'VE GOT ONE SEASON TO GET THIS UP AND RUNNING....BEFORE MY COMPETITION GET'S WIND OF IT!

Give prospects a "Unique & Different" Service.....Offer "Instant Wedding Photos on a Mobile Website"!....and....prospects will JUMP at it!

Connected to a laptop or whatever. Send wirelessly to a photo sharing website, then give guests the link to that site.

I actually just now tried it with Smugmug and it automatically sets up a mobile optimized site for mobile devices! Pretty cool!

So, on your mobile wedding website, you could have one of the buttons be "Wedding Photos" and put a description near the link that says "Photos available after 7pm" or whenever he figures they will be uploaded.

Cool idea, but 2 issues I see;

1. If the gimmick is to show guests the photos when they're at the reception for instance, the photographer would have to have someone else do the uploading so that he can continue shooting.

2. Most photographers that I've met do NOT like showing their photos until they've been retouched somewhat. That would be impossible for a quick turnaround like this.

Nah im thinking of guests taking pics... and they email them to a specific email address..and a script grabs them and dumps the images in the folder which has its own script to rotate images. I have half of this built already..just trying to find a way to parse email for attachments.

Not sure it's good because if they take a picture that is bad or like a bad joke, ummm.
The instant photo is not really a great idea either because wedding photos must be nice photos, how many photos they will choose to publish... you need to take your time, choose correct photo from over 100 sometimes. Photographers don't shoots 10 photos but more like 100 and choose 10 from it. Doing instant will not give a + to guests because they are on the live spot they prefer to see live brides or some even have their cameras or smartphones and took pictures so why they should see instant photos from a mobile site?

So as my website is going nationwide I won't be able to be in everyplaces at the same time.
They will simply upload pictures or/and videos they have choosen from the authorized wedding photographer and it will be published after wedding has ended. (24-48 hours after).

The mobile for wedding is not about photos but it's upfront, read Quentin first post.

I have a friend that does photo booths at weddings and they upload all the photo booth pics within 24 hours.. That seems like a fair turn around time..

i figured out how to do it ...anyone can send to a specific email address from their phone after they take a pic. Once sent, a CRON job will run a PHP script to parse the attachments (JPG) and dump in a folder. Then another script creates an array to make the pics rotate!

I think its an option to have guests upload pics live and see them on the web automatically. You dont even have to be at the wedding.

What other events would this be good for....any!

One drawback is there is no filter.... but offer that as an option.

My wife and I also own a video production company which videotapes weddings. We have an appointment with a bride and groom tomorrow morning so I'm scrambling getting a mock up mobile wedding site up and running.

I'll show it to them tomorrow and hopefully upsell it to them. Just not sure about the price yet.

Re: Weddings Go Mobile

I made up a flier and sent it to about 10 wedding planners here in town. I just got a response back from one that said, "love it!" I set up a demo SMS and told her to text keyword to shortcode. I plan to put together 2-3 packages for wedding planners that they could white label.

Any ideas on what to include in the 2 packages?

I was thinking...

Basic
-Mobile Site
-QR Code (on invitation to the mobile website)
???

Premium
-Mobile Site
-QR Code (on invitation to the mobile website)
-QR Code (on invitation pointing to YouTube page of couple telling them about the wedding)
-Personal video
-SMS
???
