Yeah! Las Vegas is a killer place to do this...but - isn't Vegas a more "spur of the moment" wedding place? Couldn't you attack from that angle?

Fast - Fun - Fancy - but memorable...with a little Elvis sparkle?

or is that too kitschy?

I have been slowly working on a strategy to promote this business. I haven't started on the invitations as of yet but I have been working on Save the Date announcements. Here's one that I recently created.

I like it. Really nice design!

It's funny. Only yesterday my brother showed me an invitation he had just received to a mates wedding. On the wedding invitation it led you to a website that had photos, a story about how they met, a gift registry, and also the form to rsvp.

I guess it won't be long before this becomes standard practice.

Mind you, my mum also saw it and said to me... "Promise you will never do anything like that...".

She thought it was quite tacky for a wedding.

Hi Willr,
I must admit that I am in total agreement with your mother. I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to proper wedding etiquette, however, times are changing and so is the mindset of our culture. My 26 year old daughter gave me some additional insight over the holiday season.

While preparing my Christmas/Kwanzaa card address list my daughter says "Wow mom, it just dawned on me that I do not possess not one physical address for any of my friends." So I asked "How do you plan on sending holiday greetings to your friends? " she replied "Oh I'll probably just send text messages or post something on Face Book." So with that in mind I shared my mobile wedding invite project with her and she looooved the idea. But it got me to thinking...If my daughter's communication arsenal consists of only mobile numbers, FB friends, and email addresses then I am sure that there are thousands of others that feel the same way. So I am going to pursue this and see where it takes me. I also agree with you in that I believe one day this will be standard practice

Re: Weddings Go Mobile

Not a good start today!

I am going forward with wedding sites but had a few stumbling blocks today;

I had some postcards made up in preparation of a bridal show that I went to today, hoping to talk to some wedding planners/consultants that had booths there. I figured I'd talk to them about how unique a mobile wedding site can be for their customers.
Well, there were very few exhibitors there at all (maybe the economy or wrong time of year?). And the few people I spoke to seemed miffed that I wasn't a possible client, but a salesman trying to sell them. STRIKE ONE

The few booths they DID have (maybe 15) were squeezed in a small room. They were to have a bridal fashion show later in the huge lobby (of a hotel) where there were a few hundred seats and a stage set up. Each seat had some brochures on them and I couldn't find anyone who knew about who was able to put these brochure on each seat. So I figured I'd put mine on as well! After maybe 10 seats the event coordinator came out of nowhere and told me to stop. STRIKE TWO! My "gorilla marketing" failed.

Well, I won't give up. My next plan is to get all the names and addresses of local wedding planners/consultants and send them my postcard, then follow up with a phone call. I'll keep this thread informed on how that works!

That's what I did...only I emailed about 20 planners so far, and I got one enthusiastic response! Not a bad ratio I figure for just emailing. I did have a flyer made up that I linked to in the email, so they can see the phone and get a visual of how it might work.

Good for you though, for actually taking bold action!!

Just curious - was your flyer a link to a pdf? Or a web page you created?

Also, did your enthusiastic response lead to actual work?

Thanks...

Hi Syncjam,
Although you think things didn't go well at least you learned a few things about guerilla marketing (which is a good thing). The other thing that you may want to consider is contacting bridal magazines such as "The Knot" and finding out how much it would cost to purchases email/physical addresses for brides in your geographical area. That way you can send your message directly to your target audience. You may also want to consider joining some of the online bridal forms and present your message as well. Just my 2 cents.

You're welcome Syncjam,
Anything to help out. I think attending bridal shows is an excellent idea because you want to be where your captive target audience is. Oh and by the way...you spelled gorilla correctly. "Guerilla" is a termed used in marketing

Hi Rlhurst,
I plan to approach wedding planners as well. Are you offering a kickback to planners that refer paid clients to you? I was thinking of giving them 20% - 30% of sales they send my way. What are your thoughts?

I can definitely see that happening. As a person who's purchased many booths at bridal shows for my wife's wedding video business (5 last year), I would also be "put off" by someone trying to sell me (a vendor) something....especially a person who got in by simply purchasing a ticket. I would suggest finding out who the different bridal show coordinators are and see how much it costs to set up a booth. Sometimes the small shows can be quite reasonable.

The reason they told you to stop is because the vendor has to pay the bridal show coordinator money to put their info on each of the seats. That's why they said to stop.

To get the names and addresses, you could do a google search for bridal shows in your area to see who the coordinators are. They usually have a website in which the vendors advertise. You could then just look at that list and either go to the vendor's websites or find the addresses right there if they're posted.

Or, like I said earlier, you could just become a bridal show vendor yourself and go directly after the brides. Since my wife is already in the "wedding" industry through video, I'm testing the waters myself to see if the brides we've booked are interested in mobile "save the date" sites.

Great post Mike and thanks so much for sharing. I would like to participate in a bridal show but I am wondering if brides generally book services at the show or do they just come to look to see what services are available? What has been your wife's experience?

I had a large .jpg flyer created over at Fiverr. I then uploaded it to my site, linked to it and sent that link out. It was about 2 weeks later that I got the response from the planner. She was really excited about the idea (more than I had hoped for actually). She asked what I charged, and when I told her, and then asked her if that would give her a nice profit margin, she told me that she typically doesn't upsell her clients on any of the services. She gets her fee from her client and then finds various options for them to use. She told me that she had to get some current "time sensitive" work finished first and then would get back with me in another week or so. So, it has not resulted an any sales as of yet, but it sure is an encouraging start.

So then, she could have a Save The Date website in her list of services and if the bride likes it, then she could charge accordingly.

You also reminded me of a good idea about calling them and saying that you're "thinking about getting into mobile wedding sites" and see if they would even be interested. Then it wouldn't seem like such a hard sell, but instead a survey of sorts.

With the HD quality of smart phone video you could now broadcast and watch the wedding live for cheap/easy using sites such as Qik. A great way for others to watch the wedding live who cannot attend. People could watch on desktop or on their mobile device.

Just have to make sure that you will come up with a "file" that won't eat much of the memory of the phones...

It's not a "file" it's a mobile website. That's how the mobile invitations are done.

Great Idea.
I'm musician, and I have small wedding band. We have to play about 50 weddings for this year from april to october. I will try to sell mobille sites to my clients and I will put the advertisement for mobile wedding sites to my band site. For existing clients I'll make special offer.

I've created a mobile version about 1 years ago for my band (is only a DUO..me and my singer...Duo Maximo-Hochzeitsband, Hochzeitsmusik, Livemusik, Tanzmusik, die Musikgruppe u. Tanzband) because I've seen how many people come to my site (google adwords) with iPhone and iPad...many... and than they can't doing nothing with my flash player for Demo. I've build my Joomla Site with mobile joomla component and integrate html5 player. I will build a new mobile site with my tools but right now I have no time for this, I'm building for other people and this Idea with mobile wedding site is realy great. I have direct contact to all of this people

midasman09 -- Many Kudos for a Brilliant Piece of Thinking Outside of the Box

Creating a MobiSite Directory of Wedding Services is a capital idea...which, of course, can be done for many other types of directories for various local biz categories.

Thks for the great insight!

Also....think about offering a "Special Service" to Wedding Photographers;

They (ONE in each town) can take digital photos at the wedding and reception....email them to you and you...will post them on a "Mobile Wedding Site" you make for the Photog....then...send wedding attenders a Link to the Mobile Site where they can see photos of the wedding...within a couple of days of the wedding...rather than waiting for the "Pro" shots to come out.

Make this exclusive....only ONE wedding photog in the area. That way you can charge a pretty good fee for your service.

This will help a Photog sell his service because ONLY HE (or she) will be offering this Mobile Photo Service.

Exclusivity always increase Income.

I love this idea, I just got an invitation from a cousin who did something similar with a regular website.

It never crossed my mind to do it with a mobile site, but the more I think about it the more genius it is as a regular invitation can get misplaced but having a mobile site puts all the info at the guests fingertips.

I have 2 enthusiastic "yes's" out of just 20 emails sent. I'm happy with that, so if it is too early, that means more yes's to come!

Early adoption is always harder but also can position you nicely in the marketplace.

I was reading somewhere the other day.

We are training people for Jobs that don't exist using technologies that have not been invented in order to solve problems we do not even know are problems yet.

I'm intrigued by this whole idea.

I intend to offer a free site to friends who are getting married soon on the condition I can use it as a demo.

One question and sorry if this sound like a negative but given not all guests will have browser enabled phones and therefore paper/card invites are still required are we not just increasing the wedding costs?

BTW brilliant quote Quentin.

Yes given a paper card is still required because it's a a memory gift they keep as souvenir and also many don't have mobile phone with web enable. It does increase the cost but if your wedding want to be different then it's a good idea.

Yes, the people I have seen who have done websites for their wedding also send out a standard invitation so it IS adding a cost to your wedding. However people are already doing it. As you know people tend to go all out on their weddings and want it to be the best it can be and as memorable as possible. Sometimes having quirky little things like this will separate it from other weddings people have been to.

Hi Gang,
Although I am moving along much slower than I desire to, I have managed to land a gig for a Vegas save the date. This is my mock up and I will be changing the date once I receive approval from the couple. I was pretty excited and wanted to share it with my Warrior Forum family and to extend a special thanks to Quentin for sharing the idea to begin with.

Wow, lots of great ideas here.

For those of you talking about collecting photos. I came across a great app called Hipstamatic Disposable which aims to replace the "traditional" camera at each table idea for weddings and gives everyone a "roll " of film. Once the guest takes all 24 photos, it's uploaded and added to the collective of photos other guests took. This way, all guest can view all photos of the event, not just their side of things.

I guess it'll work if you have a very hip, modern party... but grandma's not going to be happy.

My cousin got married overseas and used adobeconnect for a virtual wedding.

you could log in and view the live stream.

I think this would be a great wedding upsell doing a virtual wedding. Who doesn't have friends/family that is out of town that would want to witness the wedding live on the net? or on their mobile?

It could even be a mobile app since many smart phones have great video now and can do live stream video to sites such as Qik. It's also auto archived there and can be shared to FB/youtube etc...

Great upsell opportunity for wedding videographers, photogs, planners etc...

there is a big appeal for people to witness the wedding live rather than get a video link weeks later.

Advantage to the bride/groom is the app could have a "gift" button
