SMS Pros Need your Help
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

This post is to serve two purposes:

1) to have a resource warriors can use to cite examples of how well SMS has worked for businesses/industries. Your responses can be by restaurant, retail or whatever stats you have.

2) I am submitting my first proposal for an SMS campaign and it would really help to have some examples of SMS conversion to close this deal. The client is an auto dealer (ideally stats on this industry would be stellar) but any stats would be helpful.

I was hoping those fellow warriors who have tracked results could post them for me and other warriors who are looking to break into the SMS biz.

The kind of examples to post that would be helpful are:

1) lead generation
2) coupons
3) list building
4) anything else I haven't mentioned

The information format would include all the following:

1) industry
2) type of campaign
3) desired action
4) number of opt-ins per week or month
5) number of actions taken per week or month

Here is an example of what this looks like:

1) industry: Auto Sales
2) type of campaign: lead generation for new car sales
3) desired action: to get customer to scedule a test drive
4) 50 opt-ins per month
5) 10 extra sales per month

* For all the posts that have great content I will compile them in a pdf and add the link here

Thanks for everyones help.

I've got one for you. Set up a client in mid april with SMS. Here are the stats

Industry: Restaurant
Campaign: build SMS list for sending future offers
Desired action: subscribe by calling in or texting keyword to local phone number
Opt-in Average: 83 per month, 669 total since April 15th

Additionally: very low opt out rate, special offers/messages sent every 2-3 weeks

I would probably be just a little more aggressive with the message sending. I think some people get a little scared they might be sending too many messages and start to annoy the customers. In my opinion, and it's exactly the same in email marketing, if you are getting very few unsubscribes then it's usually a sign you are not marketing hard enough. A small unsubscribe rate is often something to worry about, not be happy about. I would be sending an offer to the list at LEAST once a week, maximum twice a week.

Yes, it's great to have a low unsubscribe rate AND a big list but if none of the people on that list are buying anything, then it's all pointless and a complete waste of time. Experienced Internet Marketers will tell you it's much more profitable to have a list of 2,000 customers whom you're in contact with very regularly and are always purchasing than a great big list of 100,000 people who don't want to hear from you.

This is especially important with sms marketing since each subscriber on your lists costs you X amount of dollars every time you send out a message. This is why you want to strip your list down to the really loyal customers.

People get on this list for the chance of winning a free large pizza every week. I am not going to advise them to send alot of messages just so we can "strip the list down" to the most loyal customers. I would imagine all are loyal customers or they would have unsubscribed by now, or not subscribed in the first place.

Remember that these are people's cell phones you're sending to. Its not like email where you might not read it for a week. These are read within seconds of sending. I think you have to treat a mobile list with a little more respect than an email list.

Chances are, even the most loyal customers to any restaurant are probably not going to come in each and every every week, but more likely once per month. If they could nudge those 670 people to come in just once more per month than they normally would, that's another 670 customers for a given month. Send too many offers and they will just bail and come in on their own schedule. Again, this is just my opinion.

I do agree with you and it's exactly what I have said in other threads. SMS marketing is different to email marketing and you do need to be more aware of that when scheduling messages.

But sending a message out every 2/3 weeks is just too long between drinks in my opinion. Yes, someone is not going to go to a restaurant every week but you still want to keep top of mind awareness. I might drink a can of coke once every few weeks or only eat at McDonalds once every 2 weeks but that doesn't mean McDonalds or Coke s is only going to advertise every few weeks. They are constantly doing it so that the next time you are looking for a take-away meal or a soft drinks, they will be the first thing that jump into your mind without a second thought.

That's what marketing is all about. You need to be a little proactive or you'll just get lost in all the white noise.

Especially if this is a free pizza of the week type list then you should be using that to your advantage once a week. "You didn't win this weeks free pizza but we are having a special on x this saturday night..."

They subscribed because you are offering the chance to win a free pizza every week NOT necessarily because they are loyal customers. This is why the way in which you build your list is also of importance. You should be building a buyers list of those who have already made a purchase from the shop. At checkout offer them an instant discount for texting x to this number. These are the people you want on your list. Not just random people looking to win a free pizza.
