Best method for finding clients?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

What are the best methods for finding clients for building mobile sites?
What methods do you use and how successful are they in getting paying clients?

Is this a soft cell or uphill battle these days in getting business to commit to a mobile site?

thanks...

The best for me personally is face to face showing the site (or sample site) on the phone itself. Let the potential client hold the phone and push buttons, etc. Make sure you watch their expression as the "light bulb moment" happens. I'm not saying it works a majority of the time, just what has been the most effective for me.

Email has not been too effective, although, I did pick up a client who owns a website design company across the country through Craigslist who wants me to convert his "regular" sites, to mobile as he doesn't have time to do that. I'm going to work on my email script, add a video, see if that improves results.

I do voice over work... here's a SAMPLE

I am curious to find out if anyone who responds to this has tried networking groups. It would seem to me that those would be an easy way to get customers. ALL members of the groups (BNI, LeTip, etc) are business owners. The networking groups have one purpose only, to generate business... sounds like the perfect solution.

I make a group of different templates (including a fully functional sample site) that are specifically designed for certain "niches".(ex. Lawyers, Dentists, Cleaning Companies, etc.) I make sure that these templates include click to call, map, and contact form (Very, very, very impressive to offline companies)

I attack the potential customers one "niche" at a time. I set a geographical boundary for myself and use sources like Google places and Yelp to find these businesses. I also do some research to find out if they have a mobile version of their site. Sometimes you'll find out that they don't have a site at all. You'll be surprised to see the amount of well rated businesses on Yelp that don't have any type of site, let alone a mobile version.

Then it's all about calling. Like I said earlier, I stick to one profession at a time to avoid mixing up information. I usually tell them how I found them, a little bit about all the services I offer, how I specialize in their profession, and ask them for an appointment. Keep it short and simple. They're busy. If they tell me they are not interested I ask the potential customer if it's okay for me to send over a free fact sheet and brochure. This gives you an opportunity to wow them without an appointment (in essence, they have made it easier on you).

You need to then put together a fact sheet and a brochure. There are sooo many sources for facts on mobile marketing out there that putting together a fact sheet should take you all of 15 min. Same thing with the brochure but make sure to include any other website, wordpress, seo, smo, or marketing work you provide in there. Be sure to use a nice shnazzy template for both. You can even get them professionally printed if you want that extra edge.

***Now this is the most important part. For every niche's sample site you want to create a business card with a qr code linking to it. It can be as simple as the perforated ones from Walmart or you can get them professionally printed. You can put just the qr code on the card or you can create an elaborate actual business card that is themed similarly to your sample site. No matter how you decide to do it make sure to test your qr code with a qr reader plenty of times before you send it out.

If you got the appointment, scan the QR in front of them and you will quickly see the WOW factor work on many of the potential customers. Be sure to mention all of the services you offer. I usually like to come up with some type of bundle package. If your sending it to them, be sure to include very specific instructions on how to install the qr reader and how to scan the qr code. I like to print out the instructions and paperclip them to the card.
This is a method that has been working for me for quite a while now. Hope it helps you.

I think that you need to focus on a specific geographic area, maybe in your immediate vicinity first. Aproach small to medium sized businesses and show them your offering.

I find prospects to be more interested in Facebook than mobile sites. But when they see their own site all done up on mobile, they go "Wow! Neat!"

Go figure.

I like using craigslist to. There are many opportunities in craigslist and you can get them them across the U.S That also helps create some kind of freedom because you don't have to meet up with them just Skype them for some kind of consultation if they want one. If not just call them. Just the way I like doing business

Too true

I show them how their current site looks on a mobile and ask them if they would be bothered to try and navigate around it using a mobile - chances are they wouldn't - then show them a demo of what their site could look like - they love it - they really do

WillR posted a really good trick on another thread on how to Google for business that have a flash website. It had to do with searching for the words that flash uses when you don't have it. From this list I look for ones that are going to show large keyword matches in the Google Adwords Tool. Build a mini site with their name on it. Go to business, explain that there are currently x number of people in the area looking for their type of business on a cell phone (hand him a copy of the keyword results). Tell him that his site is mostly/all made up of flash which is not readable. While describing this, start typing in his URL on your phone. Now show him the screen of nothingness. Tell him that for a modest fee he will be one of the few businesses in his area that will be able to attract this large number of clients. Again while explaining it type in the URL to your sample site. Hand prospect the phone and let him play around. Once he sees his name and how easy it is for people to see what he does/sells and a Tap to Call (have him do it while he has the phone. They love it when the phone rings in their store). I usually ask if this interests him. Quite often it's just a matter of telling him the price and signing the deal. If they seem to need more convincing, hand them a generic sheet you can make up of all kinds of "recent" stats showing how fast mobile is growing and the percentages of people who take action when they find a mobile site. Ask again what they think this could do for their business. If they are still unsure, just leave them with the information and follow up a few times to see if they have made up their mind. After that, use your time more productively. I've just tried this for the last week and have sold 5 mobile sites. With one client we are also working on a QR code program as well. Selling this way is, dare I say it, fun!

Do you just post your services on craigslist? I've been doing that but haven't seen any results yet.

The best ways to find the clients are:

1.) Classify your clients. (whether female ages 20 and above living in what country and etc.)
2.) Locate the appropriate keywords for your product. This thing is really effective. You can advertise to those people or businesses who belong to those keywords, it's much more efficient since people within that keywords has the same thoughts as you are, so leads will come your way just easy.

An easy way to find leads is to go to google or yellow pages and pick a business, see if they have a mobile site, using an emulator and if that works then call them up and see if they are interested in a mobile site. Simple and easy.
have fun

I agree with this, i picked up a restaurant as a mobile website client last night as i was having dinner there, just by showing what there site looked like on my phone and how long it took to load etc, then showing them what an optimzed restaurant site looks like that i had done. they were sold right then and there

Hi,

For a newbie, marketing seems to be a tough challenge everyday. Take it one day at a time and you will see improvements in your strategy.

Some newbie would start with a "Fish Bowl" approach, asking for business cards or a survey form where they are using "special offers" as bait.

So many approaches...and if you want to get more ideas on how to approach..please don't hesitate to email me: mewilhite@earnlink.net

There are lot of free lancing websites where people hire professional to do their work. The best among them is Odesk, It provides lot of work to do. free lancing is best way to find clients who are abroad or lives in different places. other wise promote yourself through your friends and other medium to fine local clients.

In general anything build by companies like intuit, ipage or other web building software are usually just awful. Do a search in google you'll see. They are usually flash based crapy sites that won't even convert in sites like duda mobile who does a phenomenal job of transforming even the jankiest of sites.
