Restaurant: First Google Stats in for Mobile Site
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I recently did a website for a client (restaurant) along with a mobile site at the same time. I began hosting both on Nov 14. The mobile site was done using Kevin Koops WSO templates in PHP and the main site is in wordpress.

I checked Google analytics stats today for both sites, and from Nov 15- Dec 15 there were a total of 516 unique visitors redirected to the mobile site - about 29% of total visitors. (This figure has stayed pretty consistent since the beginning because I was checking stats along the way.)

When you talk to clients about the importance of a mobile website, let them know that chances are good that there are about 30% of potential customers that are finding them on a mobile device. If they don't give them a good (and fast) experience, they will most likely find someplace else to spend money.

Oh, and the most visited page after the home page for my client? Coupons! Be sure to have a coupon page on your client mobile sites so customers can show the coupon from their phone when ordering.

I expect my stats for the mobile to increase next year. Be interesting to see how it changes over time.

Great stuff. Yes, always important to have analytics installed so you aren't just guessing. The great thing is that 30% number is only going to get bigger and bigger next year.

Theses stats are applicable to this restaurant business' new websites.
But in my view, it is more than likely that the websites stats for many other businesses - and other business types,
will show a higher percentage (than 30%) of visitors with mobile devices.

Even with this restaurant, I think the mobile visitors probably equalled if not exceeded
the 'other' visitors during regular working / business hours - 8:00AM to 6:00PM.

The reason is that most workplaces outlaw their employees use of their desktop PCs for surfing / browsing the net
during normal working hours, hence mobile phone becomes their unique means of internet access.

My 2 cents ...

Thanks for sharing this info. Good figures to share when talking to potential clients about a mobile site!

Pardon my ignorance but do you put the analytics code on the mobile site, on the regular site, or on both?

Thanks!

You will need to put it on both. However if the client does not have a mobile website as yet, you can still install the analytics just on their main website and there is an option inside analytics that shows you the exact percentage of visitors to your website who are on mobile devices. This is a great way to prove the need for a mobile website. Your client can't argue with flat out statistics.

Yes, two separate analytics, one for each site. The php redirect is the first thing that is encountered so it immediately redirects to the mobile site if it detects a mobile device being used. I just sent both reports to the client. Very interesting reading.

Thanks for the info, Will & xlfutur1, now I'll be able to blind 'em with science.

Or to paraphrase Benjamin Disraeli:

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and Google Analytics."
