Please explain mobile

Can someone explain the use of mobile websites to me or point me to something that does? I assume it has to do with viewing on a mobile phone. Is it necessary to have when setting up a blog and facebook for a business? Thanks.

It's simple.

When someone views a traditional Website on a Mobile Phone everything is tiny which means they will have a hard time reading it. Links are designed to be clicked with a mouse, so even on a Smartphone it make navigation difficult.

Facebook has a mobile version of their site so that takes care of Facebook Pages. Blogs are just websites formatted a little differently so they experience the same issues as a Traditional Website does when viewed on a Mobile Phone.

It's about ease of access, use, view-ablility, and functionality for the visitor viewing a website on their mobile phone as mobile websites are formatted differently to accommodate the differences such as larger buttons for clicking with fingers instead of a mouse, different formatting for easier viewing, added functionality such as "Click to Call" and "Click to SMS", GPS Navigation, etc.

So, if you have or are building a traditional blog, would you duplicate it in mobile or does it have to be done that way from the strat instead of the traditional way? Hope that makes sense.

There are a couple ways it can be done. Generally it's a question of layout and dimensions to make viewing the blog easier to read i.e. Layout and font size.

Generally there is a Mobile Redirection Script placed in the <head> tags of the traditional site that redirects the user to the mobile version of the site when the script detects they are accessing it from a mobile device.

People who view a Site on a Mobile device generally are doing to grab quick information so generally a mobile site is not as robust as a Desktop site and images are generally a reduced file size to enable faster loading as many web enabled handsets don't have as fast a internet connection as a broadband connected desktop or laptop.

If you are just cutting your teeth in this area of mobile site design/implementation, I'd recommend you look into elegantthemes.com. They have a low cost membership site of WP themes that are very high quality and they have a mobile plugin that makes it really simple to manage the mobile and the desktop content without a lot of coding or scripts. You may benefit from that when starting out to get mobile friendly sites done with minimal hassle.
