Optimizing my site for MOBILE? Easy?

Hi,

I have been meaning to get my sites optimized so they are nicer to view on mobile devices. how easy is this to do?

I asked a company for a quote and they said $1200 but I doubt its worth that.

Anyone have any ideas? Could I do it via a plugin?

I also have sites which arent wordpress which might be a problem too.

Haven't looked around for non-Wordpress solutions, but WP Touch Pro works fantastically for Wordpress sites. I use it on all mine. Bought the Developer's or Pro version.

It is not a trivial job, if you want to do it yourself.

Some of the things you'll want for a mobile-friendly site -

Loads fast - This is important because only 21% of US mobile users have unlimited data so bloated sites cost more to access.

Easy to read - The average mobile phone screen size is 320x480. The desktop screen size is at least 1024x768. So imagine squeezing a normal site on a screen that is one fifth the size. Font size will be totally unreadable!

Easy to navigate - Menu items have limited space and need to be big!

You also want to minimize scrolling as much as possible.

You need to avoid flash because Apple has largest market share and Safari is the highest percentage of internet mobile browsing.

Your best bet is to get a Wordpress theme that already does all these things. Jason Fladlien's WP Mobile Pro is a good option and reasonably priced if you only need to use it for one of your sites.

You will have to get your sites not in WP from some developers. Usually the price ranges from $300 to $1000 or more if the site is very big.
