Take iPhone for example. After I create the website for it. It is uploaded on the server under the subdomain. What I still don't understand is, how do I create an app out of it? Like say have someone download an app for this website from their iphone. So instead of typing out that url on safari, then can click on the app icon and it'll take them directly to the website. Do I have to be a developer to make that happen? And to be an iphone apps developer, i think you need Mac for the software, not windows right? If someone can explain to me the process, that would be great. |

There are a couple of ways to do this. There are WSOs that address each of the ways. There is a whole lot of good info here on the WF if you'd search for your terms: iphone app, apps, mobile websites, etc. You didn't mention what type of site CMS you're using - I assume WP. WP has plugin that converts it for mobile - not an app yet, but closer to your goal. Next there are online drag and drop app makers. Usually they want you to pay a hosting fee and itunes reg fees and such. There are FREE app makers with free hosting. Search in your favorite SE. There is a post here on WF that lists all of the better known app maker websites and the FREE one I mentioned. Sorry I don't have time to provide the links which is my usual habit - I'm busy on a project right now. Hope I've helped a little though! : ) |

From the sounds of it what you are wanting to do is have people create a bookmark icon for your site on their home screen? This is something Apple users can do themselves by clicking on the 'Add to Home Screen' button at the bottom of their screen. But a lot of Apple users do not know about that feature. To encourage this type of thing to happen what you can do is add a 'Add to Home Screen' bubble that pops up at the bottom of your website and encourages users to add a Bookmark to your website: Add to Home Screen - Tutorial |

An app is Resident on the Smartphone A Mobile site is resident on a Server and accessible via the Web. There are a number of DIY App Creation Tools on the Web. Just google for them... Other than using a DIY Platform...then Yes...you would need to be a developer.

I believe he is talking about a web-app which is basically a mobile website designed to work across multi-platforms. A web app is (as the name suggests) resident on the web.

Plus depending how you configure your mobile site you can also make your shortcut to your mobile site trigger your mobile site to function as though it is a app despite residing on a web server you can have a start up screen for it and have it running in full screen mode without a nav bar on iPhones, itouch and iPads. That's what I like to refer as mobile web app. The closer we get to a completed HTML5 standardization the more we will see more true mobile web apps. They are already trying to conform the standardization of Web based push technology, some 3rd party vendors even offer a web based push notification API already. Gonna be an interesting 18 months ahead of us. |
Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

| WillR - Bookmark works great. That is what I am looking for, except own custom icon and as downloadable app. I have done more research since last night. I am not looking for an easy solution to creating mobile websites. I prefer good old HTML(dreamweaver) for creating websites. I get how to create mobile website. But to turn it into a mobile app is what i am looking for. But it seems like for the iphone, there is no way to create an app without iOS, SDK and all that stuff. Is it possible to hire someone that creates mobile apps to take the mobile website i designed and turn it into an app for iphone, android and other smart phones? |

In regards to creating your own custom iPhone icon you don't need an app. You can still do that. It's very simple to do: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_...site_icon.html

The reason is that I have seen some other websites that have mobile version of the site as a downloadable app...was also upload on app store. I see now that there is no magic way to do it. I assume you are all doing the same thing for mobile website. You just give the customers the new mobile website url or QR code. And tell them to save it to their screen. Correct?
