Hello there, I'm picking the domain name of my new mobile design company and I am stuck between registering a .mobi or .com I mean, I will register both, but in terms of what domain I want to focus on and build links for.. which extension should it be? From what I've been reading, Google favours .mobi sites in mobile search, correct? But on desktop search, I'm afraid that it will be more difficult to rank with a .mobi Hmm... what should I do here? |

Hey, I would register a .com for your domain name. Then build a mobile site with m.yourcompanyname.com and have a redirect script on the main site that redirects a mobile user to your mobile site, that way you cover desktop searches and mobile searches. |

If you're building a company then I'd suggest investing in the top 3 .com, .net, .org and mobi - you want full control of the online platform for branding your business. First get a reseller account and buy from your own link.

Depends on what kind of account you are talking about. If you have setup an affiliate link without being a paying customer than it might be against that company's TOS. But, if you buy a reseller account making yourself one of the sub accounts is fine, you are already paying for the main account.

Hi mate, It was nice to work with .com domains . Register both of the domains and concentrate in .com website. And when coming to the mobile usage. Like another warrior said , you can use m.yourwebsitename.com . So that, in mobile search you can be top by optimizing your website. |

I would go with .com since it is the most popular domain extension. If you were to tell a customer your business name is "My App Business" they would most likely go to www.MyAppBusiness.com not www.MyAppBusiness.mobi. Yes, .mobi may have a slight advantage in the mobile search rankings, but not enough to make it worth registering IMO. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your replies everyone, I think I will go with registering both .mobi and .com names, setting up a m.mydomain.com and most importantly, making this site a success!

Well depends on the name. If the name isnt availble for .com you can always try .mobi

IMO you don't really need .mobi much. I can't say that I've heard .mobi outranks .com on mobile searches, simply because .mobi isn't really in heavy use. Besides, even if you're a mobile design service, that doesn't mean most of your traffic would be coming from mobile devices. .com is the most professional extension - stick with .com for a business and consider .net and .org for exact match domains for SEO. |

You buy a .com for 100% certain as this is a business of building mobile sites! That means you are giving the url to people and they know and want the easiest name to remember and that is ALWAYS a .com.... If it is possible, get the .net .org and .mobi as well and put a 301 redirect on them.....

I registered a lot of .mobi domains last year on behalf of clients who hired me to build mobile sites. If I could start over, I'd register them all as .com or .org and set up their mobile sites with an m. subdomain You don't want people to ask "Dot what?" every time you tell them your domain name. |

.com it is easy to remember. doing mobile designs doesnt mean that your clients are viewing your site using a mobile device. |
