Could there be any problems adding a subdomain w/o webmasters help

Hello, I'm in negotiations to sell a mobile site, I've just been asked what if I'm not able to navigate the backend of their site to upload the website to their server. They said the site is very old and archaic they don't want to have to pay the person hosting the site to upload the files. I have told them I would create a subdomain and upload their site. I haven't asked but am wondering if the site is hosted on a computer in someone's bedroom.....what do I need to do to ensure I won't run into any issues? I'm planning on asking for the name of the hoster, if a site is hosted for a client, shouldn't the client be able to ask for the hosting login info?

Yes you should get the hosting details and it should be no issues to install if you have FTP knowledge.

Once you have the login info and the phone number for the hosting company, you can call the hosting company and ask them to: 1) set up a subdomain for m. 2) find out what needs to be done to host the mobile site (new hosting account, or on existing hosting account).

in some cases, the hosting provider may not be the DNS host, in which case they won't be able to set up the m. for you. In which case you can visit whois.com and see who the domain registrar is, and set up the m. with the domain registrar.
Just to clarify...I think what the above statement meant was the Registrar may not be the Host. DNS entries point to the Hosting Server.

You can identify the Host by doing a WhoIs query. Generally you will see a minimum of two entries starting with "ns", then a number then a domain name. Some Hosting Servers dont carry the Hosting Co. name. For Instance GoDaddy DNS might be ns29.domaincontrol.com. A simple Google search of the DNS entry will usually identify who they are.

As for adding a CName for subdomain...if they are hosting their own mobile site files then that isnt the way to go because a CNAME needs to point to the location of the files in a top level domain. A subdirectory on their own hosting account would still be necessary.

Chances are the Business Owner doesnt even know how up to date their server is. Most dont...
