"Nearly half (46%) of American adults are smartphone owners as of February 2012, an increase of 11 percentage points over the 35% of Americans who owned a smartphone last May. Two in five adults (41%) own a cell phone that is not a smartphone, meaning that smartphone owners are now more prevalent within the overall population than owners of more basic mobile phones." These numbers dont mean anything. I did an informal study on this by asking 20-25 of my coworkers about their mobile habits. All of them are IT professionals who are above average users in their knowledge of gadgets and are early adapters of new technologies . All of them reside in the largest metro area in US (NYC) and they were asked a question on whether or not they are end users of mobile marketing (ie. sign for SMS alerts from restaurants, etc). Every single person said they dont do such things. There was also a study done to see if teens use QR codes which has been a hot topic in a lot of WSO's. 64% said they dont even know what QR codes are. It is our time to educate. QR codes are not being used or not known about cause we have not taught the users how yet. However they will. So why not get in before the boon in order to secure your place during? Mobile makes sense. Just my humble opinion Jodi |

Both QR codes and SMS marketing has been around for a few years now. My point is that despite all the hype about it being the next thing it has little use in the real world. You want to educate business owners about QR codes. How are you planning on educating their customers?

You both make good points - the consumer needs to see the value in access, and the marketer needs to provide access that is valuable - and attractive. If anyone has any other studies on Japan, and how they have utilized the technology - those can be helpful. They use it in a myriad of ways, but I think it can be applied and certainly adopted...(imo) The above statistic only points out how many can be accessible compared to last year same time.

"The study was conducted among a sample of 2,253 adults, ages 18 and older. Nearly half (46%) of U.S. adults use smartphones as of February 2012, up 11% from May 2011. Meanwhile, two in five adults (41%) own a basic mobile phone, making smartphone owners the most predominant of the two." Keep in mind that the disparity between the above numbers and "100%" is that a small percentage of the adult population does not have a cellphone, mostly the very elderly. The numbers may be even more off (In smartphone Favor) when taking into consideration Teens between the age of 13 and 17 that predominantly make use of smartphones.

That's an incredible number and growing, it's very foolish for businesses to not take advantage of the opportunity to engage in mobile marketing.

2000+ people really is not a big number to compare to a nation the size of the US and would rather see a larger survey pool done such as that done by comscore regardless its going to happen or has evidently happened, either way i've been waiting for this time pushing almost 10 years now so you could say i am somewhat happy - in all honesty i thought we where going to get here somewhat sooner, like 4 or 5 years ago! Better late than never i guess! |
