Thanx Mo, Do you find that scanning the bar code from the phone works, or do you use the sms text message only. As I previously mentioned I have read other articles that said regular scanners will not retrieve barecodes off phones properly. What's your take? Thanx.

If you are serious about getting started with mobile marketing I highly recommend Mobuzz's WSO. Also, pick up the OTO, it is worth it 100%. Take it from someone who has tried, and paid, for lots of SMS platforms.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to come back and update this thread with our latest program. Here is what we are doing. We are sending out flyers thru the local chamber, passing out flyers to local businesses and of coarse sending an invite thru social media to local businesses. What are we inviting them to? We are inviting them to a live webinar where they can learn how mobile can help them to grow their business. Currently we have almost 100 businesses registered. Our goal going in was 300 so we may get there. I will not go into all the details until I have actually held the webinar and closed 50-75 businesses : ) Do not think it can be done? Just watch me .. Will update the thread after the webinar if anyone is interested. |

I like the mobile directory angle. Do you think .mobi domains are a good fit for these or do you think sticking to a .com would be preferable?

Hey Mobuzz, I know you've moved on to bigger/better things (congrats on the success, BTW), but I read this thread back in November and was so inspired that I've taken massive action and am implementing this plan to get my business rolling--so THANK YOU! I am about 2 weeks from starting to build my list and getting businesses on board, (I am starting my biz from scratch) and I have a question you could help me with. Regarding the highlighted part of your message below:
I don't really want to do all the work of setting up a new client and then have to delete the account if they decide they don't want to continue. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Again, you have NO idea how much this has thread inspired me--thank you!

1. Stability of provider 2. Price 3. Features Honestly there are many great providers out there. The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to choose one and get out there talking to business owners.
Wow, that is awsome.. Thanks so much for the kind words : )

Great post BUT.... FIND ANCHORS!!!! Find a few popular businesses in your area and offer a free service for the placement of table tents or fliers (with your keyword and short code) in exchange for sms alerts. Build your list by using the anchors. This isn't anything new. Just do it! |

I'm 10 days in and have had really lackluster results so far, no opt ins except for those at the one business who has signed up...one business asked how I build the list and when I mentioned people sign up by texting in he said "NO WAY" and hung up the phone. Been running CL ads, have a beautiful postcard type flyer (got kicked out of a large parking lot for distributing them), and the same flyer in 8.5 x 11 for cash wraps, but no takers so far, either businesses or opt-ins. Any advice?? |

I just sent you an email: I absolutely understand about the incentive to join when there is a good cause that benefits from the program. I didn't want to take over the thread with my issue, but the non-profit component was one Q that I had early on (like how that works if you aren't charging businesses for the coupon). If that's the problem I'm not sure how to deal with it, since I had intended it to be a short term (ie, 2-month) promotion with no one paying for the service (except me). The concept for the short term promotion was to combine a 30 day trial with the promotion. My thought was that my package pricing for basic services is actually less than what you are charging to extend the service to businesses, so it wouldn't make sense to the biz owner to pay more than that on a daily deals program when they can get more for less on a customized one. So there's no profit for me to donate. Should I completely re-vamp the offer?

Thanks man Def a great idea. Specially working with the youth sports teams to build your own list. The best part is that the fundraising person basically acts as a sales rep offering the service to local businesses. They are used to calling and asking for donations, now they can really provide some value. |

If the offers are attractive then surely you will get more opportunities. Increase the number of offers so that people would have more options and they will choose what suits them best.

Hey guys just wanted to chime in here I just looked into starting this myself. I am just going to provide text message marketing services for local restaurants and other businesses. I found a sms software that i can download and use on my computer and use a GSM phone such as nokia or motorola with a usb to send out the text messages. I bought a straight talk phone and pay $45 a month for unlimited minutes so the only cost involved is $45 a month plus promotional material. I charge $197 a month to set up and manage this service with a $150 setup fee being the only first months charge. I wave this setup fee if the owner tells a another business owner of my services and they sign up or write down 5 business owners names and numbers to get in touch with and let me use there name as a reference. To start out i went to the local college and handed out a survey that asked the students if they would be interested in receiving text about coupons and specials that local restaurants and businesses they regularly go to offer. And which restaurants in particular restaurants they would like to get coupons from weekly. So i went to those top 10 restaurants and got there business almost INSTANTLY! 8 out of 10 and eventually got all 10 with some work! The things i found from the survey were 1. Yes they would but would only signed up if they were offered something free in exchange such as a "free soda" or "estimate" 2. They would only like 1 message a week So from that i built a package where I come in and set up table tents and post papers by registers that people can text and sign up, show the confirmation and get the free gift, the customer sends a promotional coupon or offer once a week! My first customers results: Local Well Known Pizza Place They were number one on my list, 300 out of 500 college students put this pizza place on their list. I went in, talk to the owner and he asked me HOW SOON CAN I BE SET UP and cut me a check for $150 setup fee I got the promotional items set up and he got 431 subscribers but offering a free slice of pizza to sign up ! One the first promotion he offered a large pizza for $6.99 for his loyal text subscribers! A text went out to all 431 people and 68 people came in and showed the coupon off there phone and redeemed the coupon. He didn't tell me exact numbers but he said his profit margin is 40% so ..$6.99 X 68= $475.32 $432.32 X .40% = $190.13 PROFIT! He made his money back in the first text from the set up fee and we have seen similar results all 4 weeks in the month. So 190.13 X 4 weeks = 760.52 PROFIT - $197 my services = $563.52 in profit that took hardly no work at all and it continues to become more as his list grows larger every day! Just thought that might help Thanks Richard |

Richard, I really like the idea of surveying college students in your target area. Who better to get direct feedback from than the exact target audience of your potential customers. As you did with this information, you can laser in on the hottest business leads to target while also having crucial info about their potential customer base's preferences. You are already showing the business prospect the value you bring by telling them what their customers want / need. I'd be curious to see what type of format you used for your survey. Also, did you set up a table on campus to get the survey responses or simply ask passers-by to fill out a survey regarding sms coupons, etc while on campus?

So True... "THEY DO NOT CARE HOW IT WORKS, JUST SHOW THEM THAT IT WORKS. " The only thing I can add is, it would be greater if your provider can help you or at the maximum, guide you in building your list.

A great thread, got so many tips on here, thanks Just wondering MoBuzz, or anyone else. If you use strong offers on your sms coupons, do you have some sort of system to stop the person using the coupon again and again? If it is a strong deal, then would the client (i.e. restaurant owner) be loosing out if this happens? Or are they still making good profit even though the coupons are getting used again and again by the same individuals? |

Hi, any good sms system will have a built in feature so that when a customer shows the coupon on their phone, you can click redeem under the coupon and it will be removed from the system.

The system should have a dynamic expiration feature so no matter when the customer receives the coupon the expiration date will show X amount (whatever you set it at) days away. I personally don't like the redeemable coupon strategy because then you are relying on the person to have internet capabilities and also have a good connection in the place of business.

Keep in mind that anytime a business advertises in any media they are giving a discount to someone that may be coming in anyway and they have to realize that. The key thing to be telling a client is that you want to MAKE SURE they come back in ASAP and not just hope or certainly not assume they will. These days there is the rare business that can safely assume that, consumers just have too many choices out there and are all DEAL DRIVEN. So actually it's the deal they give that will assure a repeat visit, not the other way around! Think about it.......it's a fact. Perception may be reality and I understand that, this is where as a good sales rep you overcome that and help them see the light here. Giving a someone that is in your place of business right now an incentive to come back is the only smart choice a business should be making, help them see that.

This is a fantastic idea, however my solution would be to include a link here that would take them to a mobile landing page where you would then display the 3 or 5 or 10 offers. This eliminates the need of worrying about text limitations and looks more professional, and easy for them to access later. The mobile landing page url would stay the same, but the offers on the page would rotate as often ad needed and the person would just bookmark that page for easy access. On that page you would have your logo, disclaimers, how the program works, links back to the customers websites and any other additional information needed such as location maps etc. This would really jazz up your offers, make them super professional and allow you to greatly expand your market. The other added benefit of the mobile landing page is that if you use a service just at PIJNZ to build your page, you can add a redemption function to each coupon which adds tracking to each coupon use, and once the person used that coupon it cannot be used again, assuring the business owner that no one can keep using that offer over and over to the same person, which they probably do not want to do....that should be a huge selling feature, and encourage them to give you a super great offer since they know if can only be used one time per customer.

I really like the advice you gave--that we can get carried away with showing HOW it works and that the customer wants to be shown THAT it works. I'm promoting a mobile blogging platform to local businesses and this was great advice to me! Thanks.

Awesome thread and I am in agreement that generally people that try to "sell" push people away before a person can experience what you have to offer. If we allow a person to experience something first then they can make their own purchasing decision opposed to rejecting something before having a chance to make a decision.
