How do you guys convince local business owners that a mobile optimized site will benefit their business? There's no way I can guarantee more leads like if I ran a PPC campaign for them, so I'm not sure how I can communicate to them that they're business needs a mobile ready site. |

Some owners will respond, some won't. I simply pull up their listing from yelp, urban spoon, etc where they can see something mobile optimized, then click on their page to show them how terrible of an experience it is. I then show them a competitors mobile site. Some will pay full price right there, others wont be convinced still. The best thing there is to do it for cheap, then let their customers compliment it. Then you have created a raving fan and perhaps a future client. Never do anything for free though, always get them to pay something, even if its just 20 or 30 bucks to train them to pay you.

The first thing to do is ask them to go have a look at their statistics. So this is what we did for this customer and this is what we got and it is a small charity site. Last year they had nothing and this year 8.5% of their visitors came through a mobile device and is growing. Also we notice that mobile users stay longer which is another important point. By the way this is just generic use we have not promoted their mobile site yet. The great thing is when we show this to other clients most cant access any stats so this is a great opening to take that customer from their current provider. The other thing we do show the some stats of mobile usage, explain the power of QR Codes and other great features Quentin |

There are a few factors that determine how a local business owner hears the information you share with him or her. For example, the source of the lead and the context of the conversation greatly influence how well a business owner "gets" what you're trying to sell them. Are you positioning yourself as a trusted authority in your space? Also... Would you share with us a little background info about your mobile website operation, please... I may be able to give you more specific advice on conveying benefits and helping business owners "get it" if I know more about how you enter dialog with your potential mobile website clients. Peace, B. | |

I agree with Quentin 100%. If they have Google Analytics already setup, all you have to do is review the report showing the traffic. GA has it broken down by Mobile and Non-Mobile traffic. It will even tell you what type of phone visitors used to access their site. Then I would show them what their website looked like on a mobile phone, so they can see with their own eyes what visitors see when they access their website on a mobile phone. If that doesn't persuade them that they need a mobile site, move on to the next prospect. Hope that helps. |

I use a small Droid phone (HTC Incredible) to show them how badly their desktop site displays on a common smartphone. This gets people pretty upset with their present web developers and ready to hear solutions.
